Why all the fuss?
A school in the United States has apologised to students for the "anxiety and any harm" it may have caused by dishing up a kangaroo meat dish for lunch. If it was called something else, would that make it better?
For example, kids don't eat 'cow burgers' - they eat 'beef burgers'.
They don't eat a 'pig roll' - it's a 'pork roll'.
Is it just the word 'kangaroo' that turns people off?
Who knows.
For the record, I don't think I've ever eaten roo, and I was a vegetarian for nearly 20 years - I'd be happy to see
no meat served in school canteens.
However, it always amazes me when people screw their noses up at roo, camel, and goat meat, etc.
If they had better names, it would probably make it more palatable.
A Chinese friend of mine offered me 'money meat' once.
It looked great, and smelled even better - his mother was an
excellent cook.
I asked him what it was that we were about to eat, and he said "We call it money meat".
He didn't elaborate.
I continued to ask questions until he finally told me that it was dog penis.
You can see where they get the name from.
Perhaps kangaroo meat needs a new name.
Cow has beef; pig has pork; deer has veal.
Why doesn't roo have a better name?
