Movies, recently seen
Oct 21st, 2018 at 5:09pm

Just back from seeing "The First Man" the story of Neil Armstrong.   Very interesting movie.  Brought back a lot of memories.   Lots of "shaky camera" to show what riding first an X-15, then a Gemini and finally an Apollo and a Lunar module was like.  Made me wonder why they did, particularly after the Gemini 8 mission and the problems associated with it.   Claire Foy was excellent as Mrs. Armstrong.  The stress she and her husband must have been under must be incredible.  Well worth seeing!

I didn't even know this movie was being made.

Looks good.

The director is quite young, and this appears to be his first major movie.

Apparently it was originally going to be directed by Clint Eastwood.

Kyle Chandler, from Bloodline, is in the movie.

I guess I'll wait for it to come to Netflix - don't really enjoy cinemas these days.

Saw Spitfire this arvo.  Interesting documentary.  They interviewed surviving pilots as well as loads of air-to-air footage both contemporary and from the War.  Of course they had the female ATA pilots as well.   Some very interesting Spitfires still flying.  One, a Mk.II which fought in the Battle of Britain.  Another, a Mk.IX, which one of the female pilots had flown in 1944 - which she had signed on a whim, in the cockpit, which was still visible today.  She was shown the Spitfire again and she signed it again!   Narrated by Charles Dance, his voice was well suited to that role.  Well worth seeing.   Cool

When Video Ezy shut its remaining store last month, I went and bought about 30 dvd movies and a dozen tv series. So, I will be going through those before I comment on a recently seen movie.

I did watch "1984" months ago. Quite a classic movie with a good atmosphere.

Just saw Bohemian Rhapsody.   Not as bad as I feared.  I felt it did a bit more than "just touched" on Freddy Mercury's homosexuality, which is what the critics attempted to imply.  The music was well done and the acting credible.  The teeth only got in the way, earlier in the movie.  Well worth seeing.

Filth with James McEvoy and Jamie Bell. I watched it twice. Hilarious.

Please don't thank me. Effusive fawning and obeisance of disciples, mendicants, and foot-kissers embarrass me.

I reckon James McEvoy is one of the most under-rated/utilised actors.

I saw the remake of A Star is Born.

Directed by, and starring, Bradley Cooper.

I must admit, it was quite good.

Lady Gaga ain't too bad in it either.

Just seen "Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan"  Which is about the Battle of Long Tan during the early stages of the Vietnam War.  It involved Delta Company of 6 Battalion of the Royal Australia Regiment.  Overall, as a military history it was very close to the accounts of the battle.  Some elements were over-dramatised, as per usual for any movie made for the masses.   It was though very accurate, except for a few minor technical details.  All the uniforms, ranks, weapons, vehicles were accurate.  I bet Australian Army enjoyed making this movie.  "Nui Dat" - the main Australian base in South Vietnam was a bit smaller than it was in real life.

The NLF forces which was encountered during the battle was quite accurately portrayed but they didn't really have enough bugle or whistle calls occurring to direct the troops or enough weapons of the correct types (they had too many AK-47s when they should have had SKS carbines and only two machine guns were shown when at least half a dozen were involved in real life).

I'd recommend this to any readers if they want a good, accurate, battle movie to watch.  Now, all we need is one about Firebase Coral and Balmoral.

Okay, sounds good.

Is this just at cinemas, or is it on one of the streaming services?

Okay.

I'll see if it's showing in my CBD cinema.
