Tár

Caught up with this movie today. Tár was nominated for six awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Blanchett won Best Actress at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Movie Awards and was nominated at the Academy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Well ...

I thought it was a pretentious pompous piece of rubbish.

A hideous load of shyte, not worthy of Blanchett.

Its only redeeming feature would have been if it were a true story - but, no. Just a 'women-can-be c~ntz, too', feminazi crap.

Here's one for John Smith   Wink

The New World, on Netflix.

Captain Smith is spared his mutinous hanging sentence after captain Newport's ship arrives in 1607 to found Jamestown, an English colony in Virginia. The initially friendly natives, who have no personal property concept, turn hostile after a 'theft' is 'punished' violently on the spot. During an armed exploration, Smith is captured, but spared when the chief's favorite daughter Pocahontas pleads for the stranger who soon becomes her lover and learns to love their naive 'savage' way of harmonious life. Ultimately he returns to the grim fort, which would starve hadn't she arranged for Indian generosity. Alas, each side soon brands their own lover a traitor, so she is banished and he flogged as introduction to slavish toiling. Changes turn again, leading Smith to accept a northern-more mission and anglicized Pocahontas, believing him dead, becoming the mother of aristocratic new lover John Rolfe's son. They'll meet again for a finale in England.

8.5/10 from me    Smiley

Yeah, that accented á was a dead giveaway. And Blanket as a conductor. And the kind of people who praised it when it came out.

I haven't  been tempted to look at it. Looks like you guys went against your better judgements.

Watched "Enigma" the other night. Historical drama directors often don't understand that up until the 1960s, polite men took their hats off when talking to a woman, or when they were indoors. These days, the movie hat is just a pose. Like C and W singers. Enigma is just OK, but spoiler altert, the ending is stupid. I often find good scripts ruined by something unbelievable.

Has anyone watched Oppenheimer?

I've read so much and seen a few documentaries about him, I'm wondering if there's much else to learn.

One little factoid makes me laugh - that famous clip of him referring to the Bhagavad Gita, he says:

A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu was trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds'. I suppose we all thought that one way or another

From his biographers who interviewed those who witnessed the explosion with Oppenheimer all claim he did not say anything but did what they all did - threw their arms up and cheered; the reason being: the enriching of the Uranium and Plutonium required to make the bombs had almost stripped the US war budget. Had it not worked, all the seniors on the Manhattan Project would have had to explain to the US Congress where the hell all the billions they were given went.

They also commented that Oppenheimer didn't lie in that clip - he said he 'remembered' the line, he did not claim he said it!

I did watch Oppenheimer. The movie was more about whether Oppenheimer was a trustworthy person, given his associations with Communists. I fell asleep at one stage, and left to go to the toilet at another stage. I probably missed as much as 15 minutes of the movie. But, if I did not see it in the other 2 hours 30 minutes, it probably was not mentioned.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Today's movie viewing at the local Village Cinema.

The CGI of Indi as a younger man was incredibly well done.  Cool

The rest of the movie was a bit of a disappointment. A mishmash of other movies. The similarity to the Mission Impossible train sequence came to mind.

It was OK but I wouldn't bother seeing it again.

p.s.

There was a person checking tickets today.

I went to along to see Barbie. It was quite amusing for adults, and I identified some elements of Monty Python, but I was not really interested in the script or dialogue. I was only interested in it for its style, sets and colour palette which have several recognisable influences. The production immediately reminded me of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” earlier influences like the “Wizard of Oz.”

I enjoyed the use of pastels, pink, aqua, powder yellow included in the overall mid-century modern themes, and I wonder why they are not seen very often in contemporary paint schemes for automobile bodies and housing, as they are so easy on the eye. The set of Weird Barbie's house includes a certain amount of “The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.” and backgrounds are often inspired by the mountain distance of Palm Springs, California. Ocean scenes intentionally use effects that go a long way back into musical hall stage history.

Peewee Hermann would have loved it.

I could have held off for another couple of months and just watched "Barbie" online. I had to whisper to the ticket vendor that I wanted to watch "Barbie". Then I looked around to see if there were any witnesses hearing what I said. I paid cash so that there was no record of my ticket purchase. I was one of 5 men aged over 20 years old that saw the movie at that session time.

It was such a girls movie (particularly if you are under 18 years of age) that it is hard to fathom how the movie managed to make so much money.

The Toxic Avenger (the first 20 minutes of the movie)

I think I watched this movie years ago on VHS, back when the cartoon series was making headway. Having watched the first quarter of this 'movie', I have to say that I doubt I remember finishing watching this movie as a teenager. I think the movie was rated "R" back then.

This C grade movie was so bad, that I find other low-budget movies, including locally made ones, to be more credible. Can you imagine showing up for a school stage play and putting on the worst acting that you can possibly have and go on to have the audience applaud your efforts? Not these days. But, apparently, somone green lit a movie to make this kind of schitt and then distributed it.

Melvin is the antihero of the movie. Not really, though, as his character is seemingly replaced by another actor for the superhero role. Melvin is a retarded looking, dork of a guy, working as a janitor at some fitness club. Some members of the club are a team of 4 psychopaths who have a history of vehicular homicide of residents of the town. Having shown how unremorsefully psychotic the foursome are, they then go on to alleviate their boredom by attacking Melvin in various ways.

On one particular day, Melvin is tricked into wearing a tutu to try and get the romantic affections of psychopathic blonde bimbo, Julie. However, in completing Melvin's character arc of being an absolute clueless moron, Melvin falls for the obvious prank and ends up hugging a sheep in the dark -- seemingly unaware/inexperienced of how a woman's body feels. The embarrassment of the situation leads Melvin to run off, with arms flailing, through the fitness centre, up the stairs and out the window.

Meanwhile, we have a scene of a couple of truck drivers "driving around for 2 hours" with open barrels of "toxic waste" bubbling away in the back of their tray truck. The driver and passenger conveniently stop outside the fitness centre so that they can open a bag of cocaine for some undue rest and relaxation, whilst they let their radioactive wastage bubble unlidded in an urban environment.

Melvin dives out the window to seemingly commit suicide. He falls into the tub of the toxic waste and is covered in the goo. The pranksters run down to see what had happened. "Bozo" (the chief antagonist) is unwavering in his psychopathy, and suggest to his girlfriend that Melvin cannot take a joke. Other witnesses seem unphased by the transformation that Melvin is going through, and just stand around exposed to the radioactive material, whilst only those that touch the substance get burned. Melvin finally gets up and runs off ablazed down the street.

This is only 20 minutes of a movie that is insulting to the audience. I would expect the female leads to have had pornographic experience, because that is the standard of their acting abilities. The male antagonists so far seem to show nothing but serious antisocial behavioural traits. There is no one in this movie that you can identify with throughout the storyline. Whoever thought that making a movie without a likeable character seriously needs their brains examined.

Meg 2: The Trench

A B-grade monster movie with a big budget. Somewhat about as enjoyable as the first movie, "Meg 2" continues the story about the fascination of a limited number of people seemingly knowing about the megalodons of the ocean trench. Evidently, there seems to be no real sense of jeopardy for beachside attendees that the potential for megalodon attacks are possible, even with the Chinese resort being attacked 4 years prior.

The movie opens with scenes of prehistoric times with small-ish lizards feasting on the carcass of a dead dinosaur. Along come a few larger amphibious lizards to feast on the smaller lizards. Out of nowhere, a T-rex runs after the amphibians in an attempt to eat them. The amphibians rush into the water to escape. However, the amphibians turn and head back to the beach, where the T-rex picks off one of them and turns to feast on the beach. However, a 30-metre-long megalodon erupts out of the ocean and  grabs the T-rex and drags the dinosaur into the water.

Cutting to the modern times, 4 years have passed since Jonas (Jason Statham) had encountered the last megalodon. He is on a quest to prevent the dumping of toxic substances into the water. Somehow, and I managed to zone out during the reasoning, Jonas gets recruited to work back at Manna One (the research station where they first encountered the original megalodon. Meiying (Sophia Cai) is now a 14 year old girl and rebelling against anyone who does not give her respect. However, it is not difficult to side with her, as she has an idiot of an uncle looking after her. Meiying's uncle, Jiuming, is in charge of looking after a juvenile megalodon in captivity. Jiuming's stunt includes going diving with the megalodon in order to prove that he could train the meg. When things go wrong, it is assumed that Jiuming was eaten by the meg. However, Jiuming manages to Houdini his way out of the water and miraculously appear back at the observatory within 30 seconds. I was expecting him to have a twin brother or something to explain the teleportation-type movement.

The research facility is again conducting exploration of the trench, for some reason. Upon the dive, it is discovered that there are three other megalodons in existence. Another discovery is that of a research station underwater. Further discoveries are those of underwater mining for rare Earth metals. Or, it could have been, had not one of the antagonists inexplicably decided to cause an underwater landslide and killing most of his crew to cover up this seemingly harmless mining operation. Later, the protagonists of the Manna One crew discover that they have a spy in their organisation. Having to shelter in the underwater research station, the spy and the main antagonist seem to have this idea that they just have to kill any witnesses.

I never understood the motivation of the antagonists.

Anyhoo... much like the first movie, the three megalodons escape the trench and start making their trek towards a beachside tourist area. This time around, there is a lot more snacking on the locals -- which included an inside-the-mouth shot of people getting swallowed whole by the megalodon.

FFS, I am just beyond this rubbish. I think the studios think that people have a fascination with fish eating people. The conclusion of this movie showed no real pay off. There seems to be no real direction for either protagonist or antagonist alike. More akin to "Ohh, you found me. Now, you must die" type storylines.

A Cat in Paris - an animated movie about a cat's adventures on the roofs of the French Capital.  He is a tom cat and he belongs to Zoe a dumb girl who lost her voice when her father died,  At night he acts as a burglar's lookout and scout but during the day he is a little girl's pet.  Zoe's mother is like her father was, a police officer,  The Burglar is a jewel thief and has become the police's number one criminal and is being sought everywhere.  He flits from job to job, always alluding the police and stealing millions of Francs worth of Jewels and Objects de Art, with the cat scouting the way for him.  Zoe's mother really wants to catch the thief who killed her husband and Zoe's father.  Little do they suspect the housekeeper Claudine is working for the notorious Victor Costa, the very thief who killed her husband!  He is seeking a specific statue - the Colossus of Nairobi.   They all come to collision when Victor Costa orders the kidnapping of Zoe to use her against her mother.  Dino, the cat alarmed at what is happening to his owner and his partner tries to guide the police to Victor Costa's hideout.   Rather than spoil the plot I think I'll leave it there.  An interesting movie, done in art nouveau, hand drawn style, I was taken by this.movie.  I would give it 9 out 10.

I don't think the PC touches to the script would soften the heart of a 1970s feminist.
