The Toxic Avenger (the first 20 minutes of the movie)
I think I watched this movie years ago on VHS, back when the cartoon series was making headway. Having watched the first quarter of this 'movie', I have to say that I doubt I remember finishing watching this movie as a teenager. I think the movie was rated "R" back then.
This C grade movie was so bad, that I find other low-budget movies, including locally made ones, to be more credible. Can you imagine showing up for a school stage play and putting on the worst acting that you can possibly have and go on to have the audience applaud your efforts? Not these days. But, apparently, somone green lit a movie to make this kind of schitt and then distributed it.
Melvin is the antihero of the movie. Not really, though, as his character is seemingly replaced by another actor for the superhero role. Melvin is a retarded looking, dork of a guy, working as a janitor at some fitness club. Some members of the club are a team of 4 psychopaths who have a history of vehicular homicide of residents of the town. Having shown how unremorsefully psychotic the foursome are, they then go on to alleviate their boredom by attacking Melvin in various ways.
On one particular day, Melvin is tricked into wearing a tutu to try and get the romantic affections of psychopathic blonde bimbo, Julie. However, in completing Melvin's character arc of being an absolute clueless moron, Melvin falls for the obvious prank and ends up hugging a sheep in the dark -- seemingly unaware/inexperienced of how a woman's body feels. The embarrassment of the situation leads Melvin to run off, with arms flailing, through the fitness centre, up the stairs and out the window.
Meanwhile, we have a scene of a couple of truck drivers "driving around for 2 hours" with open barrels of "toxic waste" bubbling away in the back of their tray truck. The driver and passenger conveniently stop outside the fitness centre so that they can open a bag of cocaine for some undue rest and relaxation, whilst they let their radioactive wastage bubble unlidded in an urban environment.
Melvin dives out the window to seemingly commit suicide. He falls into the tub of the toxic waste and is covered in the goo. The pranksters run down to see what had happened. "Bozo" (the chief antagonist) is unwavering in his psychopathy, and suggest to his girlfriend that Melvin cannot take a joke. Other witnesses seem unphased by the transformation that Melvin is going through, and just stand around exposed to the radioactive material, whilst only those that touch the substance get burned. Melvin finally gets up and runs off ablazed down the street.
This is only 20 minutes of a movie that is insulting to the audience. I would expect the female leads to have had pornographic experience, because that is the standard of their acting abilities. The male antagonists so far seem to show nothing but serious antisocial behavioural traits. There is no one in this movie that you can identify with throughout the storyline. Whoever thought that making a movie without a likeable character seriously needs their brains examined.
