Opera House used as a billboard

Sydney Opera House ordered to display horse racing advertising on its sails

New South Wales government tells Unesco-listed venue to comply after talkback radio host Alan Jones berates chief executive

The NSW government has ordered the Sydney Opera House to display a racing trophy with the word Everest on it and jockey numbers and colours on its sails in contravention of a policy to prevent the commercialisation of the building.

The decision by premier Gladys Berejiklian came late on Friday afternoon after intense pressure from the Daily Telegraph and 2GB’s Alan Jones to accept a plan by Racing NSW to promote the Everest Cup on the iconic landmark.

The Jones interview was in response to a front page story in The Daily Telegraph in which Racing NSW Peter V’landys said the Opera House management was being elitist.

The Telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph are paid by Racing NSW to publish a form guides for the racing industry.

Prominent businesswoman Diane Smith-Gander has slammed broadcaster Alan Jones over his on-air treatment of Sydney Opera House chief Louise Herron, saying that men bullying women is “worse than any other sort of bullying".

Jones is well out of order on this issue.

Some people don't know how low they go & how bad they look when they're trying to save their arse.

Jones is looking to recoup about $3 million that had to be paid to Wagners when he lost a defamation case they bought against him.

The Opera House is no place for this blatant gambling excess advertising.

Sounds like a biblical story ... about the money lenders being kicked out of the temple.

Quote:
The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the 20th century's most famous and distinctive buildings.[3]

Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the building was formally opened on 20 October 1973[4] after a gestation beginning with Utzon's 1957 selection as winner of an international design competition. The Government of New South Wales, led by the premier, Joseph Cahill, authorised work to begin in 1958 with Utzon directing construction. The government's decision to build Utzon's design is often overshadowed by circumstances that followed, including cost and scheduling overruns as well as the architect's ultimate resignation.[5]

The building and its surrounds occupy the whole of Bennelong Point on Sydney Harbour, between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove, adjacent to the Sydney central business district and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and close by the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Though its name suggests a single venue, the building comprises multiple performance venues which together host well over 1,500 performances annually, attended by more than 1.2 million people.[6] Performances are presented by numerous performing artists, including three resident companies: Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. As one of the most popular visitor attractions in Australia, more than eight million people visit the site annually, and approximately 350,000 visitors take a guided tour of the building each year.[7] The building is managed by the Sydney Opera House Trust, an agency of the New South Wales State Government.

On 28 June 2007, the Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site;[8] having been listed on the (now defunct) Register of the National Estate since 1980, the National Trust of Australia register since 1983, the City of Sydney Heritage Inventory since 2000, the New South Wales State Heritage Register since 2003, and the Australian National Heritage List since 2005.[9][10]

The NSW Government can do what they want. Nobody is "defacing" the Opera House ... it's just "technology" ... you know, like fireworks.  Grin

So it's a case of what not good for the Smith-Gander is good for the Jones-Goose?

Sounds like a bad case of Sheilaitic (of Feminitic) Consistencophobia - a dire predicament in which, from one side, all criticism or comment is viewed as a personal attack, and from the other all criticism and comment is viewed as fair game...

Nor am I, I despise many forms of racing and am therefore racist... after the scandalous treatment of animals involved - what an appalling (non)decision by Captain Hooknose .... what an idiot she looks now... (still).

Opera house management being 'elitist' for not wanting to lower its standards by showing racing propaganda.... get some painted on the sides of Army tanks and let's light up a few destroyers and frigates from the Navy... that should get the message across... police cars should carry advertising and accept sponsors.....and Parlie House in Macca Street could dress up like a real Macca's and earn some sponsorship moolah... maybe even open a Subway in the foyer... ramp the front steps for sports roller-blading and stuff.... fence off The Domain and turn it into a greyhound track...

I frankly couldn't really care less either way about whether its on the Opera House or not, but thats a Government decision, and the toilet stall groomer shouldnt be getting involved.

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)
