Give password or $5,000 fine

Be prepared to hand over your phone and your password. A new customs law says that travelers must not only provide their devices, but also access to them, whether in the form of a password, fingerprint, or face, or risk a $5,000 fine, Radio New Zealand reports. The only silver lining to the law, which is sure to alarm privacy advocates, is that customs officials would need to have a reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing before performing the digital strip search.

When I go on holiday the last thing I want is a bloody mobile phone.
Thay are a gross invasion of privacy IMO because you're expected to answer it and if you don't you get a message..  or they try again.

Better to live like we used to.. without them. Work only.

I always take my mobile and laptop on holidays.
Why should Big Brother have the right to invade my privacy?

I (generally) don't take electronic devices with me when I go overseas.

I see no need for them.

They don't. I do not agree with it at all. I tell them nothing.

They are an illigal organisation tbh. It's just that we concede to their demands. If every human united and faught back then maybe we wouldn't have to disclose our private lives to them. That was the whole idea of the "smart" phone.
There was outrage at micro chipping humans but give them a smart phone and they will pay to be watched....monthly.  Grin
We are stupid.

Simple
Take out the SIM card and the memory card.
Hide them, they are small enough to hide
Hand over the empty phone and say "go for it"

If this little exercise gets by in Noozuland, it will soon find it's way into every airport in the world.

I'm ensuring from now on, that all my data is on a memory card.
I will hide that card and they can go for all they are worth.

All this "security" is for our own good, isn't it.

It's because the murderous CULT of DEATH  has been allowed to spread throughout the world

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks this is all part of the grubberments plan.

Introduce a disease
Then place draconian measures in place to fight the introduced disease.
It's just a happy quinkydink that these draconian measures is what the grubberments of the world have been praying for.

With every tool these tools come up with
There is a way to beat it.

Just had a wonderful thought

I'm cracking up just thinking about it

I'm going to leave my memory card, or at least a memory card in the phone.

I'm going to generate several hundred folders
In each folder I'm going to put hundreds of pictures
Each picture will be exactly the same

A cartoon of a sheep being defiled by a noozoolund  border control officer.
With a caption
"MAKING MORE BORDER CONTROL OFFICERS"

What fun.

Council for Civil Liberties spokesperson Thomas Beagle said the law was an unjustified invasion of privacy.

"Nowadays we've got everything on our phones; we've got all our personal life, all our doctors' records, our emails, absolutely everything on it, and customs can take that and keep it."

The new requirement for reasonable suspicion did not rein in the law at all, Mr Beagle said.

"They don't have to tell you what the cause of that suspicion is, there's no way to challenge it."

Customs Minister Kris Faafoi said the power to search electronic devices was necessary.

"A lot of the organised crime groups are becoming a lot more sophisticated in the ways they're trying to get things across the border.

"And if we do think they're up to that kind of business, then getting intelligence from smartphones and computers can be useful for a prosecution."

But Mr Beagle said "serious criminals" would simply store incriminating material online.

"You'd be mad to carry stuff over on your phone.

Privacy Commissioner John Edwards had some influence over the drafting of the legislation and said he was "pretty comfortable" with where the law stood.

"There's a good balance between ensuring that our borders are protected ... and [that people] are not subject to unreasonable search of their devices."

"You know when you come into the country that you can be asked to open your suitcase and that a Customs officer can look at everything in there."

Border officials searched roughly 540 electronic devices at New Zealand airports in 2017.

Customs will be required to keep Parliament updated on the number of devices searched every year. The agency said it did not expect the number to increase.

It's already far worse than George Orwell's 1984.

We can blame Muslims for it.
