Which Animals Eat Onions?
Sep 20th, 2018 at 6:37pm

Rather than throw food scraps in the rubbish bin I tip them out on the ground in the bush near my place and in one lot of scraps there was three old onions among the scraps

It took about a week and a half before all three onions had disappeared. In that time I noticed punctures in the skins but nothing really eaten, then suddenly they were gone

Birds or four-legged animals?

Edit: nearly all the food scraps are eaten during the night

No not Abbott I don't think Yadda. Definitely a bird or animal. Around here there are foxes (being eradicated by authorities), wombats (few in number due to roadkill), feral cats, pet dogs, kangaroos, wallabies, magpies, ravens, kookaburras, cockatoos, eagles, snakes, goannas, rabbits. I haven't seen any bats, bandicoots or possums yet but could be around somewhere

One or more of these must have taken the onions

Most birds aren't active at night.  Onions are just a bulb and bulbs are favourite foods of a lot of animals and insects, so much so many are poisonous for various groups, an onions  raw pungency is a manifestation of that.

My best guess would be a fox, a wombat if they are around, possibly a possum but they tend not to hang around on the ground.

Motion activated cameras are really cheap these days.

Onions are extremely toxic to cats and dogs so probably the same applies to other animals and maybe birds.  Don't give animals onions.

Quote:
Onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic to cats and dogs. The ingestion of onions causes a condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by damage to the red blood cells. Onion toxicity can cause the red blood cells circulating through your pet's body to burst.

Also if you are chopping an onion for dinner and don't use it all   ...   don't save it for next time.   If you only want a small amount of onion   ...   buy small onions.

Got three answers off the net so far ...

1) Yes! Sheep love onions!

2) My neighbor's goats did. (eat onions)

3) Some farmers feed young cows onions.

No sheep but there are cows around here and if I recall, some goats. But not wild, they're penned, the same as horses and alpacas

I'll buy one of those $200 time lapse cameras and strap it to a tree nearby.

That's a pretty good guess, both wander around where ever they want. Wombats come right up near the house in daylight looking for food, scratching for tasty roots and that. They're not shy or scared while I video them up close, they just keep scratching away

Birds love watermelon, I watch them out the window, the flesh of a quarter watermelon is gone in 30mins, they love it,

Rats eat onions

I had a raised bed full of them, rats got to them and ate most of them.

Rats eat Onions.
It keeps the scurvy away when they are out at sea on ships.

You're right, the camera I ordered wasn't anywhere near $200, it was only $87 with free postage, and it's arrived already so will be setting it up once I get a mini SD card. It takes 8 AA batteries and is "Splash Proof" but I'll attach it to the tree in dry weather

Camera set up and operating. For those who are not sure how they work, there is three sensors, one directed to the front and two angled off to the sides. There is a panel of infrared "see in the dark" LED bulbs. The bulbs glow a faint dull red when they are triggered by the sensors. The camera can be set to "Photo" or "Movie" or both, I have it set to "Photo" only, until I know how quickly the batteries discharge. In continuous "Standby" the instructions states 8 months. Operating could be a different matter, we'll see

I've left some bread, lettuce, chicken bone and fish scrapes. I'm expecting photos of a neighbors pet dog, some rabbits possibly, and kangaroos. Onions will have to wait till I'm in town next, got none at the moment
