Talking of stolen Teslas, here is a beauty and of course it caught on fire.

What about hackers taking over the Tesla computer and making it crash ?

A stolen Tesla split into two and caught fire

Tesla Model S crashed and caught fire

A stolen Tesla Model S crashed into cars before catching fire and splitting into two on Friday night in West Hollywood. The incident may revive an old debate about fire safety.

The thief, who had stolen the Model S from a local dealership, led two police officers on a short chase on Friday night before hitting several cars and a lamp post. Although the circumstances of the accident are still being examined, the speed of the electric sedan at the time of the crash is estimated to have been at least 160 km/h.

VIDEO: Stolen Tesla splits in two and catches fire

The crash was so intense that the Tesla split into two along the C-pillar. The back half of the car crashed into a synagogue and got stuck between the walls of two buildings. Eye witnesses have confirmed that the car was in flames and sparks were flying from the wreck, and for a while the police were helpless standing by watching the blazing car. Locals who heard the explosion thought they were July 4 fireworks.

...

The driver who was thrown from the car was taken to a local hospital and is said to be in critical condition. Four others were also injured but their conditions are unknown. The two police officers were treated with minor injuries at the scene.

The incident may revive the old debate about fire safety sparked by a chain of events in 2013 when several Model S cars’ batteries got injured in accidents. As the incidents wrecked Tesla’s image and the company’s share prices took a dive, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk asked for a thorough examination to be carried out on the model by the authorities before announcing this March that the cars were getting a three-ply battery protector - a titanium underbody shield and two aluminium deflector plates - stopping hard objects from striking the lithium-ion battery packs built into the floorpan. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the Tesla S is now perfectly safe and poses no hidden hazard, and the news of the West Hollywood crash is indeed the first news in a long time involving a burning Tesla. The investigation is still in its early stages and Tesla Motors are yet to issue an official statement.

9 Teslas were reportedly stolen after hackers got around the anti-theft GPS system
TONY YOO  JUL 21, 2017, 11:46 AM

...

Just days after Tesla founder Elon Musk said a fleet-wide hack is one of his biggest concerns, thieves have reportedly stolen up to 9 Model S cars in Europe.

Dutch news service nrc.nl reports that 9 Teslas may have been taken by hackers in recent weeks, quoting victims in the Netherlands that have spoken to local police.

Tesla vehicles have always-on GPS tracking that allows vehicle owners to report any theft to the manufacturer. The car can then be remotely stopped and located by Tesla to stop the thief from taking it any further.

However, the recent Dutch cases have seen hackers get around the in-built GPS system to steal the cars undetected. Tech security publication SCmedia reported that the hacking method is as yet unknown.

A Tesla Australia spokesperson told Business Insider that the company has been working with Dutch insurer Turien, who first discovered the pattern of theft.

“Turien has been a valuable partner by assisting in our investigation. While the tactics used to facilitate these thefts apply to many vehicles and are certainly not unique to Tesla, we are uniquely positioned to try to stop them and are developing a software update to do so,” the spokesperson said.

Tesla’s sophisticated battery and parts are valuable on the black market, and SCmedia reports the recently stolen cars may have been stripped for such a purpose.

“One chopped-up Model S was discovered, by authorities, in the back of a truck attempting to enter Germany from the Netherlands leading some to believe other stolen Teslas may have suffered similar fates,” SCmedia reported.

(Published Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018)

A man stole a Tesla Model X from a residence in unincorporated Los Altos Tuesday morning and later crashed the vehicle in San Jose while being pursued by authorities, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect, identified as Eric Vargas-Bonilla, fled from the crash scene near the SAP Center but was later located, according to sheriff's officials.

Deputies first responded around 5:10 a.m. to the residence in the Los Altos area after receiving a report about a residential burglary that had just taken place, according to the sheriff's office.

Vargas-Bonilla stole undisclosed items from the residence in addition to the 2017 Tesla Model X, the sheriff's office reported.

Deputies eventually spotted the Tesla along southbound Interstate 280 and started a pursuit, according to the sheriff's office. The car chase came to an end when the suspect crashed in the area of Delmas Avenue and W. Santa Clara Street, but the suspect managed to flee from the vehicle.

A large perimeter was set up and authorities used K9s to help in the search for the suspect, according to the sheriff's office. Vargas-Bonilla was located at about 6:11 a.m. by deputies and police officers.

An investigation is ongoing.

HACKERS CAN STEAL A TESLA MODEL S IN SECONDS BY CLONING ITS KEY FOB
ANDY GREENBERG SECURITY 09.10.1801:00 PM

...
The researchers also believe their attack might work against cars sold by McLaren and Karma, and motorcycles sold by Triumph, which use keyless entry systems made by the same manufacturer.ETHAN MILLER/GETTY IMAGES

TESLA HAS TAKEN plenty of innovative steps to protect the driving systems of its kitted-out cars against digital attacks. It's hired top-notch security engineers, pushed over-the-internet software updates, and added code integrity checks. But one team of academic hackers has now found that Tesla left its Model S cars open to a far more straightforward form of hacking: stealthily cloning the car's key fob in seconds, opening the car door, and driving away.

A team of researchers at the KU Leuven university in Belgium on Monday plan to present a paper at the Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems conference in Amsterdam, revealing a technique for defeating the encryption used in the wireless key fobs of Tesla's Model S luxury sedans. With about $600 in radio and computing equipment, they can wirelessly read signals from a nearby Tesla owner's fob. Less than two seconds of computation yields the fob's cryptographic key, allowing them to steal the associated car without a trace. "Today it’s very easy for us to clone these key fobs in a matter of seconds," says Lennert Wouters, one of the KU Leuven researchers. "We can completely impersonate the key fob and open and drive the vehicle."

Just two weeks ago, Tesla rolled out new antitheft features for the Model S that include the ability to set a PIN code that someone must enter on the dashboard display to drive the car. Tesla also says that Model S units sold after June of this year aren't vulnerable to the attack, due to upgraded key fob encryption that it implemented in response to the KU Leuven research. But if owners of a Model S manufactured before then don't turn on that PIN—or don't pay to replace their key fob with the more strongly encrypted version—the researchers say they're still vulnerable to their key-cloning method.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/nearly-100-of-teslas-stolen-in-the-us-since-20...
The number of these electric cars being stolen has steadily increased every year along with production: 6 in 2013, 15 in 2014, 9 in 2015, 28 in 2016, 57 in 2017 and 23 from January to May 2018. And yet almost every stolen Tesla over those years has been recovered — all except 3, including that sole Tesla stolen in 2011. (Tesla did not respond to request for comment.)

So as i said lee almost all the Tesla's that get stolen r recovered........ Including that 9 from last year... maybe u need to be more current. Ohh the article i used is only 10 days old not years old like the crap Jules uses  Wink
I was mistaken though its 3 that have never been recovered in 10 years of making cars.  Smiley

Crafty Tesla Thieves Just Did Something Almost Unheard of to a Tesla Model S
By Jack Crosbie on June 1, 2017

On Wednesday, German Police officers stopped a suspicious truck on its way to the Lithuanian border to see what was inside. When they opened the back doors, they found a sight of unspeakable, and relatively unprecedented horror — a hacked apart pile of Tesla Model S parts, including an entire battery pack, on their way to the black market.

Berliner Zietung first reported the bizarre crime on Wednesday, which made its way onto Reddit because of the sheer peculiarity of the crime. Tesla vehicles are equipped with extremely sophisticated anti-theft systems, including persistent, always-on GPS trackers, which makes them an extremely unattractive target for thieves.

Originally, the driver of the truck told police who bought the parts in Amsterdam, and presented authorities with a bill of sale, which turned out to be fake. The car, as it happens, was stolen in the Netherlands on Saturday.

Here’s what they found in the back:

...
Tesla found in back of truck going to Lithuania.  That Tesla has seen better days.

As several redditors pointed out in a thread about the crime, a normal car can be stripped down, chopped up, and sold for parts in under an hour. But since Teslas are so rarely stolen and chopped, it took the thieves longer to break everything apart. Reddit’s /r/teslamotors forum also had a field day speculating as to how the thieves got around the Tesla’s tracking system.

“I’m imagining if they could sneak one off the street with a tow truck and get it into some kind of Faraday cage (a pretty big one, perhaps a shipping container) where GPS and LTE signals would have a hard time transmitting and dismantling it in there,” humanwire wrote. Teslas have another GPS device in the key fob and can’t be hot-wired in the traditional sense, so stealing one usually requires thieves to physically tow the entire vehicle somewhere. There were some other theories that got pretty deep into the internals of a Tesla as well — turns out, the best-equipped people to steal a Tesla are already Tesla owners, which also probably keeps the theft rate down.

Tesla Model 3 Stolen From Mall of America Using Only a Smartphone. A little bit of social engineering can go a long way.
BY ROB STUMPFSEPTEMBER 14, 2018

With cars becoming more connected than ever, cybersecurity is a hot-button topic that extends past your computer screen and into your car. Using a bit of technology, an alleged car thief was able to get his hands on a Model 3 at the Mall of America and drive away without needing a key. The alleged crime was reportedly committed via smartphone.

A computer forensics specialist who commented on the happenings of the incident was able to narrow down just how the alleged stolen Tesla was taken with such reported ease. The person allegedly responsible for taking the car is believed to have reached out to Tesla's customer support to add the stolen Model 3 to his Tesla account by its vehicle identification number. Once the vehicle was accessible on a smartphone that was signed into this person’s account, he was reportedly able to unlock the car and drive away without ever needing a key.

Several days later, the alleged car thief was tracked down and arrested in the stolen car in Waco, Texas, more than 1,000 miles south of its starting point in Minnesota. Since this person disabled GPS tracking on the car, the owner had to utilize a different method of tracking down the alleged crook. The owner tracked the location of the car's Supercharging and provided it to local authorities where they promptly located the car and arrested the man behind the wheel.

The Tesla is owned by a company called Trevla, a Tesla rental company located inside of the Mall of America. The 21-year-old alleged car thief had previously rented vehicles from the company at least six times prior to the alleged theft, confirmed a local news station with the owner of the company. The owner also recalled this same person supposedly bragging about the extensive knowledge he held regarding Tesla's security systems, ultimately leading the rental company to suspect this particular regular customer when the vehicle came up missing.

The automaker told Electrek that the alleged car thief likely had previously rented the vehicle and had an already-authenticated phone as a result. The owner of Trevla reportedly refuted this claim, stating that he had removed the phone's access following this person’s prior rental. At the time of writing, Tesla did not respond to The Drive's request for comment.

Tesla has enabled keyless entry and driving in its vehicles for quite some time, enabling the convenience of driving using only one's phone is a luxury which most people have yet to experience just how insanely convenient it can be. Unfortunately, convenience can also be a point of entry from a cybersecurity perspective. The Model 3's primary use of entry and driving is a linked smartphone, using only a backup keycard to keep handy in a wallet or purse in case of emergencies.

Though Tesla has the highest rate of theft recovery, it still looks to reduce the number of events which occur. Recently Tesla has addressed this problem by adding a PIN-to-drive function. This enables owners to require a PIN (in addition to a key fob or authenticated phone) before actually driving off with the vehicle.

All that's left of the Tesla. Stolen overnight. [Sad news]

Woke up this morning to a notification that the charging was interrupted ~4 am. This is all that is left. Also, the car is offline.
Awaiting police response.
If anyone sees a red Model X, 100D around London, please don't share photos with me, it's probably not ours and it'll probably add salt to the wounds.

The fact that it looks like the charger was forcibly removed from the car makes it seem like it wasn’t a key hack or anything like that (else the thief would have been able to unlock the charger too).
Maybe they literally towed it away and never actually unlocked the car?

·
Yeah, maybe it was a flatbed theft.

Now, I wonder if the car is clever enough to realize something unusual is happening to it and run it's cameras for a bit. Either the fact it's moving/tilting or that charging was ended by force. I'm guessing the bad guys wouldn't be trying to disconnect the battery/offline it in the guy's driveway, at least drive a few blocks away before trying that.

Do Tesla's sleep while charging or are they always awake?

Are you going to get another one?

I’ve heard that people are putting their keys in the microwave (as that’s what police do when seizing mobile phones and they don’t want remote wiping to occur whilst their waiting for their RF blocking bags). Obviously don’t cook your keys....

You can get RF blocking key cases now which will help anyone who wants more security. I wonder if this is why the Model 3 uses Bluetooth and NFC cards, to get around this issue....

How Thieves Can Steal Your Tesla Model S in 10 Seconds - Shown in a Video
By Armen Hareyan G+ Apr 10 2018 - 10:36am

Tesla Model S, Model 3 and Model X owners as well other EV owners should always be alert and careful because, as is shown in this video, thieves can steal your Tesla in 10 seconds even if you are 10 feet away.

If you read this story, please share it with Tesla or in Tesla forums. The company needs to know how easily thieves can steal Teslas so they can come up with protective technologies.

Andrei Kondrashov from Kondrashov Lab demonstrates how vulnerable Tesla is to the following type of car theft. For the test, Kondrashov took the car from Elena Lisovskaya (a popular Car Youtuber from Lisa Rulit) and checked the vulnerability of the regular radio channel by re-transmitting the signal. The car-theft took no more than 10 seconds.

The owner of the Tesla is in the video and she is participating in this test. The idea is to see if Tesla is vulnerable to car theft.

The video is in Russian language, but my explanations here and the illustrations will demonstrate how vulnerable Teslas can be to this type of theft. I will also write what Tesla owners can potentially do: basically nothing, except being extra vigilant.

The video warns not to try to reproduce this test. This is only for information purposes.

Read all about it here

Thief to Police: ‘Mr. Tesla’ Gave Permission To Take The Car
RAY PRINCE  NOVEMBER 28, 2017

Last Friday, four suspects were arrested for stealing four $80,000 Tesla vehicles from a showroom in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Shortly after a police investigation was launched to find those responsible for the break-in and thefts, suspect Shane Craig Smith, 24, was quickly apprehended while driving suspiciously in one of the vehicles.

After impounding the vehicle and returning to the dealership, police discovered in Smith’s possession four sets of Tesla keys, the dealership’s license, a certificate of commerce, and an endorsed check for $49,500 made out to Tesla with Smith’s endorsement signature.

When pressed as to why the keys were in his possession, Smith explained that an acquaintance provided him with free Teslas and an office key to the building.

Shortly after this exchange, police discovered another of the stolen Teslas driving past. After a brief car and foot chase, its battery died, placing another suspect, Zachary Hillman, 19, in police custody.

Along with a third suspect, Earlene Parker, 27, both Hillman and Parker informed police they had been “given the car” by a “Mr. Tesla” and affirmed their status as being members of the “Tesla family.”
