Crafty Tesla Thieves Just Did Something Almost Unheard of to a Tesla Model S
By Jack Crosbie on June 1, 2017

On Wednesday, German Police officers stopped a suspicious truck on its way to the Lithuanian border to see what was inside. When they opened the back doors, they found a sight of unspeakable, and relatively unprecedented horror — a hacked apart pile of Tesla Model S parts, including an entire battery pack, on their way to the black market.

Berliner Zietung first reported the bizarre crime on Wednesday, which made its way onto Reddit because of the sheer peculiarity of the crime. Tesla vehicles are equipped with extremely sophisticated anti-theft systems, including persistent, always-on GPS trackers, which makes them an extremely unattractive target for thieves.

Originally, the driver of the truck told police who bought the parts in Amsterdam, and presented authorities with a bill of sale, which turned out to be fake. The car, as it happens, was stolen in the Netherlands on Saturday.

Here’s what they found in the back:

...
Tesla found in back of truck going to Lithuania.  That Tesla has seen better days.

As several redditors pointed out in a thread about the crime, a normal car can be stripped down, chopped up, and sold for parts in under an hour. But since Teslas are so rarely stolen and chopped, it took the thieves longer to break everything apart. Reddit’s /r/teslamotors forum also had a field day speculating as to how the thieves got around the Tesla’s tracking system.

“I’m imagining if they could sneak one off the street with a tow truck and get it into some kind of Faraday cage (a pretty big one, perhaps a shipping container) where GPS and LTE signals would have a hard time transmitting and dismantling it in there,” humanwire wrote. Teslas have another GPS device in the key fob and can’t be hot-wired in the traditional sense, so stealing one usually requires thieves to physically tow the entire vehicle somewhere. There were some other theories that got pretty deep into the internals of a Tesla as well — turns out, the best-equipped people to steal a Tesla are already Tesla owners, which also probably keeps the theft rate down.

Tesla Model 3 Stolen From Mall of America Using Only a Smartphone. A little bit of social engineering can go a long way.
BY ROB STUMPFSEPTEMBER 14, 2018

With cars becoming more connected than ever, cybersecurity is a hot-button topic that extends past your computer screen and into your car. Using a bit of technology, an alleged car thief was able to get his hands on a Model 3 at the Mall of America and drive away without needing a key. The alleged crime was reportedly committed via smartphone.

A computer forensics specialist who commented on the happenings of the incident was able to narrow down just how the alleged stolen Tesla was taken with such reported ease. The person allegedly responsible for taking the car is believed to have reached out to Tesla's customer support to add the stolen Model 3 to his Tesla account by its vehicle identification number. Once the vehicle was accessible on a smartphone that was signed into this person’s account, he was reportedly able to unlock the car and drive away without ever needing a key.

Several days later, the alleged car thief was tracked down and arrested in the stolen car in Waco, Texas, more than 1,000 miles south of its starting point in Minnesota. Since this person disabled GPS tracking on the car, the owner had to utilize a different method of tracking down the alleged crook. The owner tracked the location of the car's Supercharging and provided it to local authorities where they promptly located the car and arrested the man behind the wheel.

The Tesla is owned by a company called Trevla, a Tesla rental company located inside of the Mall of America. The 21-year-old alleged car thief had previously rented vehicles from the company at least six times prior to the alleged theft, confirmed a local news station with the owner of the company. The owner also recalled this same person supposedly bragging about the extensive knowledge he held regarding Tesla's security systems, ultimately leading the rental company to suspect this particular regular customer when the vehicle came up missing.

The automaker told Electrek that the alleged car thief likely had previously rented the vehicle and had an already-authenticated phone as a result. The owner of Trevla reportedly refuted this claim, stating that he had removed the phone's access following this person’s prior rental. At the time of writing, Tesla did not respond to The Drive's request for comment.

Tesla has enabled keyless entry and driving in its vehicles for quite some time, enabling the convenience of driving using only one's phone is a luxury which most people have yet to experience just how insanely convenient it can be. Unfortunately, convenience can also be a point of entry from a cybersecurity perspective. The Model 3's primary use of entry and driving is a linked smartphone, using only a backup keycard to keep handy in a wallet or purse in case of emergencies.

Though Tesla has the highest rate of theft recovery, it still looks to reduce the number of events which occur. Recently Tesla has addressed this problem by adding a PIN-to-drive function. This enables owners to require a PIN (in addition to a key fob or authenticated phone) before actually driving off with the vehicle.

Obviously finding them is not the same as finding them in one piece.

Stealing a still experimental untested Tesla is like taking candy from a baby.

All that's left of the Tesla. Stolen overnight. [Sad news]

Woke up this morning to a notification that the charging was interrupted ~4 am. This is all that is left. Also, the car is offline.
Awaiting police response.
If anyone sees a red Model X, 100D around London, please don't share photos with me, it's probably not ours and it'll probably add salt to the wounds.

The fact that it looks like the charger was forcibly removed from the car makes it seem like it wasn’t a key hack or anything like that (else the thief would have been able to unlock the charger too).
Maybe they literally towed it away and never actually unlocked the car?

Yeah, maybe it was a flatbed theft.

Now, I wonder if the car is clever enough to realize something unusual is happening to it and run it's cameras for a bit. Either the fact it's moving/tilting or that charging was ended by force. I'm guessing the bad guys wouldn't be trying to disconnect the battery/offline it in the guy's driveway, at least drive a few blocks away before trying that.

Do Tesla's sleep while charging or are they always awake?

Are you going to get another one?

I’ve heard that people are putting their keys in the microwave (as that’s what police do when seizing mobile phones and they don’t want remote wiping to occur whilst their waiting for their RF blocking bags). Obviously don’t cook your keys....

You can get RF blocking key cases now which will help anyone who wants more security. I wonder if this is why the Model 3 uses Bluetooth and NFC cards, to get around this issue....

How Thieves Can Steal Your Tesla Model S in 10 Seconds - Shown in a Video
By Armen Hareyan G+ Apr 10 2018 - 10:36am

Tesla Model S, Model 3 and Model X owners as well other EV owners should always be alert and careful because, as is shown in this video, thieves can steal your Tesla in 10 seconds even if you are 10 feet away.

If you read this story, please share it with Tesla or in Tesla forums. The company needs to know how easily thieves can steal Teslas so they can come up with protective technologies.

Andrei Kondrashov from Kondrashov Lab demonstrates how vulnerable Tesla is to the following type of car theft. For the test, Kondrashov took the car from Elena Lisovskaya (a popular Car Youtuber from Lisa Rulit) and checked the vulnerability of the regular radio channel by re-transmitting the signal. The car-theft took no more than 10 seconds.

The owner of the Tesla is in the video and she is participating in this test. The idea is to see if Tesla is vulnerable to car theft.

The video is in Russian language, but my explanations here and the illustrations will demonstrate how vulnerable Teslas can be to this type of theft. I will also write what Tesla owners can potentially do: basically nothing, except being extra vigilant.

The video warns not to try to reproduce this test. This is only for information purposes.

Thief to Police: ‘Mr. Tesla’ Gave Permission To Take The Car
RAY PRINCE  NOVEMBER 28, 2017

Last Friday, four suspects were arrested for stealing four $80,000 Tesla vehicles from a showroom in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Shortly after a police investigation was launched to find those responsible for the break-in and thefts, suspect Shane Craig Smith, 24, was quickly apprehended while driving suspiciously in one of the vehicles.

After impounding the vehicle and returning to the dealership, police discovered in Smith’s possession four sets of Tesla keys, the dealership’s license, a certificate of commerce, and an endorsed check for $49,500 made out to Tesla with Smith’s endorsement signature.

When pressed as to why the keys were in his possession, Smith explained that an acquaintance provided him with free Teslas and an office key to the building.

Shortly after this exchange, police discovered another of the stolen Teslas driving past. After a brief car and foot chase, its battery died, placing another suspect, Zachary Hillman, 19, in police custody.

Along with a third suspect, Earlene Parker, 27, both Hillman and Parker informed police they had been “given the car” by a “Mr. Tesla” and affirmed their status as being members of the “Tesla family.”

According to South Salt Lake County jail records, Smith was charged with felony receipt or transfer of a stolen vehicle, felony forgery, and theft. Parker was charged with felony receipt or transfer of a stolen vehicle and Zachary Hallman, the third suspect, was charged with felony receipt or transfer of a stolen vehicle and felony burglary. The latter two are being held on $5,000 and $245 bonds, respectively.

A fourth suspect, William Weist, was also apprehended and charged with possession of a controlled substance. No word on his connection to the case or if Mr. Tesla will bail him out of this one.
