AN American political editor has explained why he believes an Australian cartoonist’s depiction of Serena Williams was racist — regardless of intent.

Dr Jason Johnson, who is also a professor of politics and journalism at Morgan State University, suggested the Herald Sun’s Mark Knight was aware he’d drawn Williams as a “brooding, big-lipped, almost ape-like” figure and that it was unnecessary in his endeavour to highlight her bad behaviour at the US Open.

“If the cartoon was purely about bad behaviour I don’t see why she had to be depicted the way she was. You can have her jumping up and down, whining, crying, whatever — that’s typical for sport … you can depict people as sore losers,” Dr Johnson told Melbourne’s 3AW.

I wonder if Dr Johnson actually sees Williams as a "brooding, big-lipped, almost ape-like". Because what I saw in the cartoon was of a tennis player throwing a tantrum for not getting her way. I happen to find Serena quite attractive. But her attitude was quite ugly that day.

Attractive?
We have very different views of attractive.
I do not find semi masculine ape like females attractive.

Now, Audrey Hepburn, that's attractive
Cher in her younger years attractive
Even Nova Paris
But Serina..........not in my nightmares

I can see the resemblance

See the white eyes, a dead set give away
Add that to the two arms and legs

It's true, they are almost identical.

Yep....pretty much what I see too.
Perhaps serina is offended by her appearanc.

All I see now is a spoilt little shyte of a kid that has thrown a major tanty because she got caught cheating and subsequently lost the match. She's embarrassed and has to bring someone down with her.......the rant she had is proof. And the fact that Naomi feels she has to apologise for "winning" because this ape is throwing a major dummy spit. Give me a break. That is disgusting. Williams should be stood down and ridiculed, not promoted as a victim of racism. What a cow....or ape as the yank Dr described her.

So, you can't handle the likes of Maria Sharapova, Sally Fitzgibbons, Sally Pearson, and Sam Kerr? You go for the skinny type?

And Williams does not have "ape like features".

Of course she doesn't.
That was the words of the US Dr Jason Johnson. He was the one that raised the "ape like" appearance of the williams drawing.

Its no more racist than the Trump cartoons we see every day. Its not about the colour of her skin. The real problem is that some people are just too thin skinned. Its getting to the point where "racist" has little value in journalism.

Agreed....oh I penned that anyway.  Grin

Was Michael jackson a black man or a white man? He can't be both.
He said himself it doesn't matter if you're black or white.....but I think it did to him personally.
