Gmail allows you to do a lot of tricky things. It will let you send an email that appears to come from your optus address. It will first get approval by sending a link to your optus address.

There is a good chance that your optus mail has a feature that will auto forward your mail to another address. This would allow you to switch over to gmail fairly seemlessly. But if optus doesn't like the idea of making that switch convenient they may not give you the option.

In any case you should still switch, and just maintain both for as long as necessary.

Thanks FD,
I finally managed to use the Optus Webmail to send myself a photo.
I did better than 5 experts - still it took about 4 hours work to do it & nothing on any website was of any help.
The manual is useless, no Youtube videos were of any help.
This phone is a joke.
I can't believe they sell rubbish like this to people.
Not even the "experts" in the Optus shops can use the phones they sell to customers.

We'll see how I go.
I'll try it out for a few weeks but I might go back to my 6 year old phone
as at least I didn't lose sleep trying to use it.

I expect it is possible, just not worth your time trying to figure out.

Thanks FD - we'll see today -
I think its because most of the websites are Microsoft compatible - not Android compatible.
Microsoft does things like that to keep people using their software.
Maybe the Optus site was built using Microsoft software?
Microsoft has already paid a $billion fine in Europe for doing stuff like this.
They do everything possible to cut competitors out.

I'll report back.

Bobby, using a smartphone with android apps is one the smoothest tech experiences you'll ever have.

All you need to do is put your Optus email into your gmail settings and away you go. You can even change your emails are set with your Optus email address.

Hi Gordon,
I consulted 5 smart phone experts today at various shops including Optus.
None of them could use Optus Webmail to attach a file
using my phone.
It appears that no Android phone can use the Optus Webmail site.

I don't have a gmail address.
Are you suggesting that if I get one I'll be able to use Optus Webmail?

cheers
Bobby

Yes, get a gmail address. I have my own domain and now use Bmail as my mail server because they're more reliable than everything else I've tried. $5 a month and it's a bargain!

Even without a domain and using Gmail for free, you simply put your details into the appropriate field in your Gmail settings, and it will retrieve your emails, and as FD said, when you send you have the option for it to appear to come from you current email, and when people click reply, they will reply to that.

The tech glitch you're experiencing is the Optus crap, not android.

Thanks Gordon,
you'd expect more from a multi billion dollar company like Optus.
You'd expect people who sell phones to know how to use them.
You'd expect their own email site to be user friendly.

Right now - I have another problem - the phone rings out in only 4 to 5 seconds when someone
calls me -
I can't even get it out of my pocket to answer in that time.
I've just spent 30 minutes trying to solve that one.
Even advanced features don't allow me to increase the ring out time.
The search mode can't find "ring out time"
I'll put a few hours into solving that problem tonight.
I suppose after 6 months I'll get it all working correctly?
I'm still not impressed yet as everyday things like that should be set automatically to good default settings.
Obviously the factory just pumps out phones & doesn't care about the user initial experience.

cheers
Bobby.

I'm guessing here so anyone feel free to jump in and correct me, but I reckon that ring out is a setting within your Optus voice mail and nothing to do with your handset. Which handset do you have ?

Bobby, why is it that you spent hours of your time trying to hold onto something you got for free - the optus email address - but you keep talking about discarding a device you probably paid a fair bit of money for?

Optuse webmail is not a smartphone.

Thanks for trying to help me.

I tried - using XX as 30.

Adjust ring time      **61*321**XX# (then press 'Send' or 'Call')

it says Connection problem or invalid MMI code.

The phone wasn't expensive - only about $225.
The latest Android phones cost about $1150.

The Optus address is not for free -
you only get it if you keep paying your monthly bill.
I just don't feel like sending out emails to 100 different contacts including Govt.
departments to have a new email address for my important correspondence.

Wow, they really do have you over a barrel.

You don't have to email 100 contacts. Just use gmail from now on, and in a year or two you probably won't care any more if the optus one disappears.

So tell me -
what is Google getting in return for their free email address?

Sounds odd......I used the Telstra equivalent when I purchased my smartphone a couple of years ago...are you sure you hit the # button before pressing send or call?????
