Smartphone is junk
Sep 2nd, 2018 at 12:12am

I have used an ordinary mobile phone with no internet connection in the past.

I just bought a new smartphone and I am finding that everything I want to do is impossible.
For example - If I go to Optus Webmail I can't can't attach a picture.
see here where someone else has the same problem:
https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Android/Optus-Webmail-Desktop-version-on-Androi...

In Optus Webmail on my desktop I see  a tab called "desktop version"
I can click on that & it allows me a button to attach a photo.
There is no button on Optus Webmail that I can see with the mobile phone.

It looks like my new phone will be next to useless.
I am sure there must be a way to do it but I don't want to
spend 100 hours finding out.

My new smartphone will end up in the rubbish bin after one week if I keep finding crap like this.

Does anyone else find their Smartphone is next to useless -
a piece of garbage destined for the rubbish bin?

So people -
don't believe all the crap people tell you of how good Android phones are. (such as Samsung)
The first real thing I tried to do all stuffed up & I'm not happy about it.

At least I only paid $220 and not $1200 for the latest version of Android useless crap.
Imagine having to throw a $1200 smartphone in the rubbish bin?
I'd probably feel better to smash it with a hammer &
put the video on Youtube for other suckers to see.

Why do we only find out about these things after we buy something?

Your first mistake was using optus webmail. Never use the email address given out by an internet service provider.

This morning - I started afresh.

I updated the phone - via WiFi to save data -  all the latest updates.
Still - I can't attach a photo with Optus Webmail.
I tried using the Google Chrome browser - still the same problem.
It appears that Optus Webmail cannot be properly used with any Android device.

Why then are Optus shops selling Android phones when you can't even use them on their own Webmail site?

I now have a very low opinion of Optus.

Is it me doing something wrong?
I am new to this.
Any advice?

I've been using that email for over 12 years.
It's my lifeline to over 100 contacts including Govt. Depts. such as tax etc.
I don't want my private info going overseas to to a gmail or other account.

Exactly. Now Optus owns you.

Get a gmail account. Start using. Hang onto the optus account only for the contacts.

Yes - Optus owns me now.
I will go to an Optus shop today to see if they can work this phone
& attach a photo to an email.
If I can't attach files to emails the phone is garbage.

It seems that this Android phone can perform 1000 miracles
with different apps but doesn't perform the most simple
& basic tasks that everyone actually needs.

I expect the phone is fine. The optus email app is junk.

I'll find out today but it still begs the question -

why would Optus sell Android phones if they can't attach files
in their own Webmail system?

I am new to this so maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I expect it is possible, just not worth your time trying to figure out.

Thanks FD - we'll see today -
I think its because most of the websites are Microsoft compatible - not Android compatible.
Microsoft does things like that to keep people using their software.
Maybe the Optus site was built using Microsoft software?
Microsoft has already paid a $billion fine in Europe for doing stuff like this.
They do everything possible to cut competitors out.

I'll report back.

Bobby, using a smartphone with android apps is one the smoothest tech experiences you'll ever have.

All you need to do is put your Optus email into your gmail settings and away you go. You can even change your emails are set with your Optus email address.

Hi Gordon,
I consulted 5 smart phone experts today at various shops including Optus.
None of them could use Optus Webmail to attach a file
using my phone.
It appears that no Android phone can use the Optus Webmail site.

I don't have a gmail address.
Are you suggesting that if I get one I'll be able to use Optus Webmail?

cheers
Bobby

Gmail allows you to do a lot of tricky things. It will let you send an email that appears to come from your optus address. It will first get approval by sending a link to your optus address.

There is a good chance that your optus mail has a feature that will auto forward your mail to another address. This would allow you to switch over to gmail fairly seemlessly. But if optus doesn't like the idea of making that switch convenient they may not give you the option.

In any case you should still switch, and just maintain both for as long as necessary.
