I'm not a fan of "war heroes", and obviously not a fan of the Republicans (in the US), but I think McCain was a decent man deep down.

His heart was in the right place, but he just made a few bad decisions.

I have to take my hat off to any man who lived through five years of torture from the "enemy".

At the time, he thought he was doing the right thing.

But I still don't excuse him for dropping bombs on people.

I admire the fact that he was intelligent, though.

i.e. he learned from his mistakes.
