We can go on burning coal and gas, its not good for the atmosphere and its going to get ridiculously expensive, but we can do it for the foreseeable future. However, currently the existing five power stations in Victoria's Latrobe Valley use 125 billion litres of water, equivalent to a third of Melbourne’s water use annually. That is not sustainable, and it can only get worse as power demands increase. That does not include the heavy use of water in coal mining. Its the technology of a bygone era, when power demands were small, populations were small, and resources and labour were cheap. Any political party that puts its faith in coal, is digging its own grave.
