Will you Opt out? - medical records.

Australians are being warned about potential privacy issues with the new digital My Health Record system.

Here's what you need to know.

Is the data safe?

Security advocates are urging people to consider opting out, citing potential privacy issues.

"We’re concerned about how private information will be properly secured in the future. This government does not have the best track record when it comes to national databases of private information,” Digital Rights Watch Chair Tim Singleton Norton told SBS News, referring to Centrelink's controversial "robo-debt" recovery program.

Mr Singleton Norton said the government should reconsider its approach to the scheme.

“While My Health Record is a good idea, in theory, we need to make sure the emphasis is based on an individual rights-based approach, rather than what it is now, which is ‘let’s just build up a database now, and that’ll give us a wealth of knowledge and we’ll see how we’ll use it in the future," he said.

“That’s not caring about an individual’s right to control their privacy.”

It looks like too many people will have access:

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/my-health-record-privacy-doctors-support-2018...

The Australian government is creating a national online database known as My Health Record,
capable of storing your entire medical history.
Privacy experts say a data breach is “inevitable” with more than 900,000 people in the sector able to access the information.
Patients will have the ability to decide what information is uploaded and lock files.
People have until October 15 if they want to opt out of the system.

The Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA), which is responsible to introducing the system, says 12,860 healthcare professional organisations are already connected to the My Health Record database, including GPs, hospitals, pharmacies, diagnostic imaging and pathology practices.

Previously, police needed a warrant to obtain health records from a doctor. Law enforcement will be able to access My Health record if they are preventing or detecting or for fraud, in the case of “the protection of the public revenue”.

Already did it seems - I see documents from my doc that say not to be included in the records system - never even knew the question existed, but apparently the docs figure I need to tell them I want it...

Good thinking.

I will opt out. They know where you are, what you buy and when. Its almost complete. Inevitable I suppose, but so open to abuse. If the military cannot keep secrets anymore, don't expect the government, or any one else, to honour privacy agreements.

Within a week of going to hospital many years ago
I started getting unsolicited calls on my mobile phone
trying to sell me everything.
I had never had them before.
I can only assume that someone in the hospital sold my mobile number to scammers.

I don't trust the grubberment

So I'll be opting out pretty soon.

The public servants will sell access to insurance companies and medical insurance at the first opportunity.
They will also use it to watch your habits and medical needs so they can reduce BENIFITS wherever they can.

Trust the grubberment

NEVER

I signed up to eHealth several years ago because a neighbour mentioned it, but mostly to check what it had of MY records ... there was bugger all there.

My elderly GP can barely use a keyboard, less alone transfer all my stuff to something online and I suspect that his "minders" don't have a clue either.  Roll Eyes
