Not sure how these things normally work, but I think the real problem is that hostgator does not automatically detect and reboot crashed servers. Seems like a simple thing to do, and would improve their uptime statistics.

So why did it take so long for Hostgator to flick a switch? They were told (by me) that the site was down.

Then you should not need hostgator to restart a service. You should be able to via cpanel.

Although it would not fix someone being malicious you should also be able to cron a script to test if bind is up and if not to restart it. If you had access to the logs you should be able to determine what the problem was.

The site is going down again- for how long this time- the warning signs are there right now- just as before- this is the end of ozpol- only a new host can solve this and FD isnt interested in a new host-

The warning signs for me were it would flash that the site "cannot be reached " at least once ( maybe up to 6 before it just wouldnt connect at all )- and that is happening again now
