Hello Agnes.  I love that there cartoon.  I like this thread too, thank you.

Hand washing is another way to save the power that the electric machines use.  It also allows one to concentrate on each item and clean stains that a washing machine cannot see.  It has no eyes like we do.

It takes some practice to get a good routine going with a week's laundry, and washing linen is quite a challenge to get used to, but it does wonders for the old muscles in the back, shoulders and arms.  No need for a hoover and no need for gym membership either.

Most of all, it is a nice way to bless the sky god.

Hello to you Imrah - handwashing is an energy saving activity and is ok for a few small items- my gran used to use what was known as a copper and boil her washing once a week ( every Friday) was her wash day- a few disasters like colour run etc not to mentions shrinkage ( used to happen) and the old scrub brush came our as well for stubborn grime etc- and of a very physical activity so no need for the gym- she was fit-  since all the time and labor saving devices have hit the market pollution has sky rocketed- but technology is starting to redress the situation as well- such as CULTURED meat is on the horizon and that will eventually drastically reduce the production of a main pollutant in the world- green house gases ( cows by far are the main source( methane) as this technology is only in its infancy it wont be long and we wont have to murder animals for our meat source anymore- I cant wait-in the meantime I try not to eat a lot of meat- the world is trying to turn green but its  slow expensive process and needs to happen a lot faster-

Thanks for your reply Agnes.  I have a couple more ideas on saving electricity but thought it best to allow others to post and not hog your thread.

Speaking of hogs, I hope you don't mind my ruthless post in the meat thread today.  As a vegetarian for originally ethical reasons, I still eat an egg every day and cheese which comes from milk which comes from a cow, but it doesn't have to kill the cow, just like eating an egg doesn't kill the chicken.

The massive weight loss and the improvement in my overall health since I stopped eating meat is not something I can really put into words to describe on a web forum.  There is still more than enough protein in my diet with eggs and beans and traditional veges that come from the supermarket, without any of those specialised vege-burgers or other expensive boutique-style products.

I don't see any major problem (yet) with this new technology to culture meat in a lab, but it is largely just a dirty habit in society which we can survive without if we can quit.

Please don't be offended by my reply in the meat thread.  I am glad to meet a fellow green-minded member.

My daughter is a strict vegan ( ethics) and while I dont think I could ever do it that strict I am aiming to change  few things up like you do for ethical reason ( not to mention health )  I do eat fish/some chicken/ but no hooved animals/eggs/cheese/milk even though the practices use by the dairy industry are disgraceful also- if its cute and fluffy I cant eat it- I thought your comments were fine tbh and your opinion belongs to you-

Chicken is a bird, and I consider them to be sentient animals.  I admit that I do often still crave the taste of a roast chicken when I'm hungry, although my logic tells me that it is just the memories of feasts gone bye.  I have some friends who come and feast on my wild birdseed mix, now mainly doves, and this year there are a large flock of pink&grey galahs who have for the first time opted not to fly north for the winter, but have stayed around my place because they trust that I will see them through the cold, hungry, wet season.  Now I am obligated to make sure that none of my fifty or so doves and 20 or so cockies go hungry before the weather warms up and the flowers bloom again in the springtime.

Chickens are presumably quite dullminded, but they are still birds; bird-brains.  My conscience tells me not to eat them.

Fish are a different story in my ethical framework.  I do not consider a fish to be sentient to the same moral standard as a bird.  Sharks have us for lunch without a second thought, and so I have decided that it would be fair enough for us to farm fish and eat them, preferably not depleting the natural stocks as our northern neighbours would appear to have done in the last century.  (That is why Indonesian fishing boats have to sail to Australian waters to catch any now.)

The health side of fish-eating is beyond my experience.  I still haven't found a need to eat them, but ethically, all I can say to anyone who likes fish is bon appetit'.

PS:  Sorry if we've veered a bit offtopic, Agnes.  I am quite revolted by the images in the meat thread, so prefer not to look at those pages.

I will continue to eat chicken and fish- sentient or not- so its all good Imrah- I believe all living things are sentient and eventually they will declare that plants are sentient and its headed that way now- I mean how far do you take it- seriously- we will be reduced to eating dirt-

If you researched into the cruelty cows suffer so we can have cheese  and milk you wouldnt eat that either- my daughter researches all of this stuff- its too heartbreaking for me- I cant even look-

I can understand the validity of the highlighted words above.  A decade ago I would disparage vegetarians saying that I thought that they discriminated against plants by eating them.  It was only when I realised what it felt like to be chewed on that I realised that animals and I share the same kind of flesh, so that was why I made the decision to stop eating them.

It is unfortunate that human greed leads  farmers to run large stocks of animals for dairy and eggs from battery farms too.  We've got to eat something though.  The only way I can see to prevent hardship upon these farm animals is the one-child policy and a hundred year wait for the population to reduce back to more sustainable levels.  It would never be a vote-winner unless cows and chickens were given the vote too.

reducing population  in an under populated country like ours that wont happen- a good start is the lab cultured meat-that will save the planet/and the enslavement of most meat animals will be a thing of the past-
