I think both the current government and fair works commission are spineless.  If they are truly about principle, then this reduction should be applied equally across the professions.  Meaning, public servants, the ADF, medical/nurse, emergency services.   Because, as the Fair works have it, in their reasoning, that would mean employers can afford more workers, and provide service better.

So, why it is not applied across the workforce then?  Well, because, there will be SUCH a backlash, that would make the work choices look like a walk in the park.

So, instead, they applied to: fast food, restaurants, pharmacy workers, and hospitality.  Why? because, the workforces are more transient, generally earns less, and so most likely labor supporters.

This decision is spineless, it cause hardships, and now we know that it does not create jobs.   And we don't even get to know the commissioners that made those decisions.   This decision is purely political.  Like every commission, this Fair works commission is more concerned about its own survival, and so would do any thing to the government bidding to keep their fat pay checks.

Penalty Rate cuts should cover the cost to employers who just had to hand over a long-standing wage increase to pleb workers (mostly 'foreigners' these days anyway).

Penalty rates had to be reined in, they had just gotten too far away from any sane rate of pay for the type of work being done.

Time and a half is fine, and most people are happy with that, but double time and more is where it is just silly.
You want to pay some silly twat more than a trained professional to make you a coffee, or hot dog, because it is Sunday???
Need to be compensated for missing Mass??
Don't make me laugh.
It was just a stitch up the unions enforced when they got too much power and sewed the seeds of their own demise, by making unreasonable claims, and employing bully boy tactics that NOBODY respected.
Union members were embarrassed by the thugs sent to represent them.
You had to be a lazy prick with a scottish accent who'd never done a hard days work in their life to become a union rep. It got too silly, and people left in droves.

Say different, and you weren't there.

Penalty rated had not changed in over 30 years perhaps even double that except to be lowered slightly.

In the industries affected so fat double time for Sundays was very rare even before the change.

Trained professionals do not make coffee and seldom work on week ends. Many earn ridiculous unjustifiable rates during normal hours.

Load of Rubbish.

Shame we don't have some thugs now to give these scum bags who cut penalty rated the belting they deserve.

No we always knew that - It would take a real dope to have swallowed that lie.
