I'm going to throttle the cat
Jun 3rd, 2018 at 10:00am

I came home from shopping early this morning and saw Ruffy the cat with something grey and white in his mouth. The second he locked eyes with me - he ran under the house. He wouldn't have done that if it was a rat. A few minutes later I heard flapping and this poor little turtle dove had escaped from his claws and hidden in a bush.

It's in a box now recovering. There are a lot of feathers missing, so I'm not sure if it will survive, although when I checked on it an hour later - it flew out of the box and smashed into a wall. The stress kills birds before the physical damage does.

I've spent 3 years teaching the cat the difference between birds and rats. He gets approval when he catches a rat - even though I hate the torture they suffer, but he gets punished when he catches a bird. It's been more than a year since he's caught one.

The bigger the rat - the quicker it's killed so I know they don't suffer for long, but he should know by now that birds are taboo. They are weak - so they're tortured for hours before the final crunch comes.

cats  are self sufficient- unlike a clueless dog- we cant blame them for acting on thier instincts- and they have a right to be here as it is  with any other animal -  it seems they upset you so much Mantra- but thats life- some things we will always have to accept as part of life- other wise you will be upset forever-

I've always been lumped with people's unwanted cats AG, but the only thing I really hate about them is their torture of small animals. I will never get used to that.

Regardless of how well fed they are - cats still can't resist pouncing on some defenseless creature - not to eat most of the time, but just to play with.

He will be punished. Instead of getting 4 meals a day - he's only getting 3 a day for the next week - and no biscuits.

He loves his biscuits so I'm attaching some turtle dove feathers to the packet. When he starts to whine for some - then I'll tell him he's naughty - over and over again until he gets it into his head that he can't touch anything with feathers.

I think it's called habit reversal therapy.

it is very normal or natural thing for a cat to do....sadly...

however have you tried a bell collar?.....

not sure desexing changes anything but it is something I have always had done to my animals....

also as they get older  like me they get less active....

it is something mother nature must have thought was useful...I know my cat had brought home so many rodents  which I cannot stand.. but all the same I am grateful there are less of them with her around...

some wish all cats were exterminated    but then the thought of being over run with rodents  sends me spinnings...

Without cats around we would have billions of rats & mice
that would eventually wipe us out from disease &
hunger because they would eat all our food.

Human civilisation could not have advanced without cats.
It's a symbiotic relationship that we need.

8 mice - 4 males & 4 females can turn into 131,000 mice in just one year!
And 1 million mice just 9 weeks after that!

I think the mice were unintentional but the
cats were brought here because most people love them as pets.

Dunno why they were brought here if it was intentional.  They have no place in Australia.

Doubt they were brought as cats, more likely ship cats to keep rat numbers down.

I haven't had problems with previous cats and bell collars, but I've tried numerous times to get this cat to wear a collar  He has always gone berserk - as though he is being attacked by a strange animal.

I do appreciate the reduction in rodents though.

This is all true Cods. The professionals rave about back burning being essential, but it often gets out of control. Do they consider the terror and slaughter inflicted on all our bush creatures when they start these fires? Wild bushfires also are more often than not started by firebugs.

Australia hasn't looked after their native animals. We have one of the highest losses of species on earth and they're still disappearing quickly.

The thing is the cats have been here longer than we have. Cats in the wild dont go after birds either because they are harder to get. The deforestation is whats killing birds.

Placental land mammals, but not cats, arrived with the aborigines. Cats arrived with the First Fleet.

...

...

Here kitty kitty:
...

No cat should be sold or given away unless it is neutered. Cats should be phased out as a pet. That way the pool of destructive feral cats won’t grow.

I've had to rescue a second little turtle dove in 8 days. The first one died suddenly after 2 days - no doubt from an infection from the cat's claws or teeth.

This time Ruffy the cat was innocent because he was sitting beside me when I heard this furious flapping. Turtle doves do it a lot in the trees when they're courting and mating, but this noise was coming from the ground.

I ran outside and saw my favourite little butcher bird fly quickly onto a nearby tree branch, but she left her victim stunned and bleeding in the grass.

I've got the baby dove in a box. Its eye has been damaged and its neck has an open wound where the butcher bird tried to eat it alive.

I thought it would have died overnight as it has obvious neurological damage. However this morning it's still alive. I mashed a bit of boiled egg and warm water together into a liquid and surprisingly it slurped a fair bit, so fingers crossed. Although if it does recover - it won't be able to be released.

For the first time in a long time - I can say that it wasn't the cat, but one of my much loved native birds. I also know the butcher bird who caused this damage wasn't hungry. She's very well fed, but it's clear that hunger isn't the issue when it comes to a predatory animal trying to kill a weaker one. They just can't help themselves.
