I, for one, am happy to share the road with cyclists

However, I believe cyclists should be identifiable.

Number plates should be fitted to every bike ridden on the road, to assist in reporting those who break the law, intimidate drivers, damage vehicles or otherwise create a menace.

Those cyclists who argue against such measures have something to hide

Why do you want to hide your identity?

What are you doing wrong that you do not want your identity known?

How do you suggest I affix it so it can be seen from the rear, without causing a huge amount of drag?

I've got an idea where you can stick it    Cool

How will that be seen.

I'm guessing it'll be seen as offensive.

Rider training needed?  These are professionals at work....

...

BTW - the argument put forward that double riding is better than single file for motorists to overtake is totally absurd... it's frankly scary when you've got two clowns riding side by side and chatting away and not paying attention.. only need to wander a bit and bang....

That video is not relevant to road riders. Even pro teams on training rides ride as 2 side by side because they are on open roads.

On dual-carriageways or on single-lane roads, and if the latter then what width of road, and how much traffic is passing in either direction?

If it is a dual-carriageway, then you merge to the right lane and leave the vehicle you are passing the entire left lane, technically.

Our 'dual carriage' has a bike or safety lane - wide enough for a car - there should be no need to pull over into the other lane to pass a bike.... are they supposed to be on freeways?

Here's Peccary's biker attitude in Perth for you:-

If you look very closely when you get on the freeway in Perth, you might notice signs on the left that say 'No Bicycles' or words to that effect.

Let me put it this way, mate.  Only a suicidal cyclist would deliberately ride down the middle of the road in front of an approaching car for no other reason than to risk their life.  In most cases there would usually be some valid reason, because there is a much higher degree of danger on a bike in the city than in a car.

It does not make any logical sense except as some kind of political statement, and if that is the case, then all I can write is that they'll get over it when the animosity that they have to put up with on the roads calms down.  I am sorry that there are those amongst us who cannot see the big picture of this little commuter war and lift their game like most Western Australian drivers have since last December.

It is much safer to do what Gillard and Brown told us and be nice to the Sky God when we travel in the city now.  Your grand children will than you one day for your kindness and courteous manners to your friendly neighbourhood cyclists, (if that's not taking it too far).

Yup - in that clearly marked lane on the side.... not down the middle to 'stand on their rights' etc.  Anyone that stupid deserves to be hit.

Can you think of a valid reason to ride in the centre of the lane?  It's acceptable on some roads around here because they are notoriously narrow - but then there isn't a heap of traffic either, and it's easy to go around them - as I do in - the other lane, giving them a very wide berth.

I treat them with courtesy and respect - I expect the same.
