Cyclists should not be sharing roads with motor vehicles, far too often I see perfectly good bike paths unused while these cycle nutters mix with cars and trucks.

Whilst I agree with you in some cases, the problem is that bike paths are more windy and have more stops than the road and the one thing cyclists hate doing is stopping and starting. Thats why they go on the roads.

Personally I ride on the roads for my commute where there is a safe designated bike lane on the road, but then will go to the bike path where there is not one. On my weekend rides in the country, then I will go on the roads.
I dont think motorists can ever be trained to respect or even see cyclists, same goes for motorbikes. Im an occasional bike rider and I dont go anywhere near motorists. I had a nasty incident at a set of lights about 4 years ago with a car running a red light which taught me a lesson. Doesnt matter if you are in the right if death or permanent disability is the reward. I dodged a bullet, I dont argue the case anymore over who is right or wrong, I just stick to the paths no matter how long it takes.

I don't know., I think the overwhelming majority of drivers are fine.
Majority, sure. You only need to get clobbered by the minority.

True, I tend to get honked at and distance tested more

You mean like people with knives? I agree. Only a coward would use a weapon to try and intimidate someone.

I would not use it other than in self defence, or training.

But use it I would, without hesitation.

If it's between me and them, it's me every time.

I agree with Valkie.  Number plates for bikes must become mandatory.  And, imo, bike riders/owners should also pay rego, insurance, the whole deal.  Only when government becomes realistic and introduces these will bike riders be able to legally claim their right to ride amongst traffic

1. I do pay rego for my car.
2. I pay insurance for my bike.
3. What would be a fair rego for my bike? GVM? because compared to a car, I'd be paying 4 dollars for my bike.

I tend to lean both ways on the cost.
While I feel that prego should be compulsory on bikes, one must consider the primary reason for riding one, it's cheap exercise.
I think imposing insurance, rego fees and all the other over the top expenses would detract from the BENIFITS to society gained from people riding bikes.

Perhaps a small fee for the purchase of the Number plate and registering the owner, but less than 20 bucks, or even tacked onto drivers reno, after all many drivers ride bikes as well.

The primary reason for the plates is not to raise revenue, or to keep track of vehicles, but simply to enable identification of riders who flaunt the law and act aggressively.

The cost of the paperwork would be an order of magnitude higher than what you can get a new bike for. This is nanny state gone crazy.

Don't you think it's a bit of a hysterical over-reaction to call them thugs?

You have obviously never been to Sydney and seen couriers in action.
Thugs accurately describes them.

Yeah

That's a gimme.
But then, what nationality are most cab drivers today?
Say no more.

I'm not saying all bike riders are total morons.

But there are a considerable number out there who obviously do not have any grasp whatsoever about physics.
A large vehicle, especially a truck, can't stop on tuppence, bike riders seem to think they can and should.

I think thats my general point. I won't deny there are dickhead cyclists, but I dont think the problem is any worse than dickhead car, truck, bus drivers.

But cars, trucks and motorcycles can be easily identified.

Cyclists cannot, they therefore believe anything goes and they cant be caught.

Make them identifiable and we would have at least some semblance of fairness.

On a different point of note.

The Cane toads want to register and speed limit disability scooters.

What next? Keeping pensioners indoords without a handler.

Nanny state....Australia.

Same with pedestrians. They should be forced to have a number plate stapled to the back of their head.
