101 reasons Soccer struggles in Australia
May 24th, 2018 at 3:04pm

They insist on calling the game football , while most Aussies still call it Soccer.
We have the Socceroos, not the Footeroos.
If they want to fit in with Australians, they should have kept the Australian name.

As a sport it is not as egalitarian as Cricket or AFL
Bruce Reid and Greg Shipperd can both play in the same side and both bring skills.
Similarly AFL has Sandilands and Ballantyne in the same team.

Soccer is low scoring, punctuated with long spells of boring play.

Low scoring, makes Soccer easier to corrupt by gambling.
It only takes one dodgy play to result in a goal and that can be the decider.
So only one referee or player needs to be corrupted.

Soccer has long spells of boring play.

While no doubt Soccer players are skilled, the range of skills are quite narrow.

Soccer can and has rewarded cheating.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina_v_England_(1986_FIFA_World_Cup)

Once again because of the low scoring nature of the game one cheating instance will determine the match.
This is very unfair and against Australian values.
soccer in Australia most likely lost a lot of supporters after the Italians cheated Australia out of the world cup

I only got to 7 reasons,,, still working

And yet its one of the most popular junior sports in the country.

And yet its one of the most popular junior sports in the country.

How long has that been the case?

If its been like that for a while there must be a reason kids drop out.

These are questions Australian soccer should be asking itself if it wants to start getting better crowds to watch.

Do you think the 2006 exit from the world cup kicked soccer in the guts in Australia?

Different people different result.

For some yes but for others seeing Australia absolutely giving it to the worlds heavyweights was an eye opener.

The difference since has been simple to identify - The Coaches. We went to one world cup with a world class coach and made the final 16 where they were beaten by the eventual winner in a lucky penalty based decision in a game where the best team clearly didn't win.

The Italians had to take a dive to win 1-0.

I don't mind watching the occasional game of soccer but would much rather the footy.

What held soccer back in the past was that you had Croat clubs, Serb clubs, Italian clubs etc  from the youth league right through to the state teams. And unless you were the right ethnicity for that club it was hard to get a start. They've broken that down but there is still some residual from this arrangement. In time soccer will become more mainstream with more avenues for aspiring players. Then it will get big and we'll become a world player. When kids are playing it in such numbers it will only get stronger.

I think the 2006 world cup game against Italy was all it took to destroy any chance of soccer becoming a popular sport in Australia. Kick an opponent in the back whilst he is not involved in the play, pretend to trip over, claim that you broke every bone in your body... get awarded a penalty kick.

Yes I call it Soccer as did my father whose parents came from Scotland...  it was called actually Soccer Football, soccer being the shortened version.

The original name for the game was Association Football.

My guess is FOOTBALL as in FIFA etc and as now adopted by SBS etc, is because of global recognition.  Oh and of course due to the recognisable fact that you are not allowed to touch the ball with your hands.

Not sure your point there.  There are specialist positions in Soccer...  Fullback (Sweeper), Forward (Striker), Goalkeeper.  Both male and females play Soccer, and there are long, short and indoor versions of the game.

Quote:
Soccer is low scoring, punctuated with long spells of boring play.

Unlike other forms of Football... in Soccer you only get 1 point for a goal.  In the recent Uefa Cup, if it was Rugby the score would have been 18-6...

Quote:
Low scoring, makes Soccer easier to corrupt by gambling.
It only takes one dodgy play to result in a goal and that can be the decider.
So only one referee or player needs to be corrupted.

Ah no...  no more vulnerable to gambling than Boxing, Rugby or Horse Racing, for example.  Where you can bet on things like first team to score, first player to score etc, etc, etc...

Quote:
Soccer has long spells of boring play.

In your opinion...  running up and down a basketball court bores me..  as does a 5 day test match in cricket that ends in a draw...  and lets not forget those close Rugby games that end with 4-0 or 6-nil....  how can they be less boring?

Quote:
While no doubt Soccer players are skilled, the range of skills are quite narrow.

Not as narrow as other players in other forms of Football.

Quote:

Yep, poor Referring does that.  Happens in every sport.

Quote:
Once again because of the low scoring nature of the game one cheating instance will determine the match.

Same in all sports...

Quote:
This is very unfair and against Australian values.

Cheating and poor Refereeing ruins all sports for all people not just Australians.  Drugs, ball tampering, betting, simulation (dives), travelling, hitting below the belt, etc, etc, etc...  especially bad in professional sport where IMO if you cheat you are not a professional.

Quote:
soccer in Australia most likely lost a lot of supporters after the Italians cheated Australia out of the world cup

Nah...  just made real Australians more against the Italians from then on.

Quote:
I only got to 7 reasons,,, still working

Good luck with that.

The worse things in Soccer today are... FIFA, rule changing and poor Refereeing where the rules are not strictly adhered to.

When the Italian player in the world cup tripped over his own feet and claimed a penalty.

Soccer would be better if they were able to use their hands, seems kind of weird having a ball game and not using hands.

I think a lot of people had the impression that Grossos dived. He did not have a lot of room to move. But he did have enough time to kick the defender in the back, jump over him and then do his dramatic collapse. However, he was awarded the correct decision.

Children are like that. At 5 years old, parents not wanting too much contact in the play, anyone can kick a ball along the ground, and if they only score 1 goal in the game, well then they, for that moment, are the as good as Beckham, a player they know nothing about, and never saw, but the parents rave how rich he is.

50 kids on each side, nobody gets hurt, they all run around, parents are pleased that they are busy for the entire game, and at the end of the day mum tells her little boy how good he was today.

But at the age of 8 he gets bored to the eyes, 60% of them don't know how it feels to actually score a real goal, and they get itchy to play a real game like the rest of their friends. They want to play footy!

None, but I played a sport from 5 where they give people weapons.

So is that the reason you never played soccer? Because hockey was way more interesting than soccer and the play was superior?

But at the age of 8 he gets bored to the eyes, 60% of them don't know how it feels to actually score a real goal, and they get itchy to play a real game like the rest of their friends. They want to play footy!

I was thinking this may be the case.

Which could explain the high rate of junior participation, yet as an adult sport Australia wide it is struggling.

Because it's boring as fkkk to watch?
There are no hard hit ups.....just pathetic acting and sore shins.
Very low scoring.

When I was young the majorty of kid splaying wocker had one of two reasons.

1) they were Italian.

2) their mother would not allow them to play a contact sport.

Numbers dwindled as they grew older and made their own decisions.

Oh, like when an AFL player fakes it, that's Australian, but when a soccer player does the same its Un-Australian?

I cant stand Soccer, but all the sports have ways to "game" the rules to get a penalty advantage  Angry.

Thats true, however one dive will not decide many other results as it does in soccer.

Lloyd from Essendon has regretted the shame he is loaded with for his diving. (once the upms saw the replays they stopped giving him free kicks.

One of the best backmen in AFL (Rance) has been busted for diving,,,,,, not rewarded like in soccer.

So there are some differences even tho the two sports contain divers.

A lot of sports have their 'flaws'.

But besides National Redneck League (NRL) becoming a very 'stupid' (and boring) example of sport here in Australia  Roll Eyes Where even the players don't even know how to spend their earnings properly and wisely.

Soccer in general has become an extremely 'farsical' Sport of corruption, cheating, egotistical and other poor qualities of human behaviour. In other words - Soccer (both Admin & Players) have lost all sense of 'PROFESSIONALISM'.
The 'Swan Diving' that goes on and the 'Performances' that go with it are a very
UGLY
blight on the game ...but the same goes on in the Admin of Soccer all around the world.

I say this as an Australian knowing full well our 'national Ego' of playing 'rough' sport and our Soccer players being 'rougher' than other Regions ...but being 'rough' (VIOLENT) is not the answer to the Soccer problem and such rough-VIOLENCE is also not PROFESSIONAL (and hence why Australian Sports WOMEN show more professionalism here than the men.  Tongue)

Soccer is no longer a 'beautiful' game, it is indeed 'ugly' as hell and has been for a long time. Even a game without swan diving and admin corruption would still be 'ugly' because it can be boring as hell with a 0-0 draw  Roll Eyes

Bah Humbug! Angry

Australia is not very good at soccer.

For starters we only spent $45 million on bribes trying to get the world cup.

The scores are not high enough in soccer.
The game has a result from flukes rather than skill.

Make the goal 2 meters wider & 1/2 a meter higher.

That would multiply the scores by about 3.

could do that, would still be boring

may as well make the whole end of the field a goal, with no goalie.

Let's be honest -

we'll never get anywhere in the World Cup unless all
of our players are already in the top European leagues and
are borrowed just for the World Cup matches.

It was just nonsense to think that some minor league hacks

The thing is, the Socceroos don't play to the standard of the Europeans, no matter how you interpret. The Socceroos need to convert their goal scoring opportunities to goals. And they need to increase their defensive play 400%. Then the world will start respecting Australia at the world game.

Otherwise, our team is going to have to reduce themselves to drama queen divers for those free kicks.

How else would you separate them given they were on equal points, equal goals.

A playoff, perhaps? Not by red and yellow cards which are subjective just yuck.

Perhaps, but the problem I can see with that is that there is a short turn around between games so you're essentially saying to the team that wins, good luck you're out of the next game cause you won't be able to run.

The game is rigged anyway, they could just toss a coin to decide who wins,,,,,, nothing would be lost by the way of entertainment .

I'm not a soccer fan, but this pleased me:

Croatia wins thriller over England, advance to World Cup final

...

"When the final whistle blew and they knew they were going to their first World Cup final, the Croatians ran to their jumping and cheering fans in their iconic red-and-white checkered jerseys.

"Croatia joined an exclusive club of 13 nations that advanced to a World Cup final, doing it in a tournament where powers Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Spain made early exits."

England didn’t deserve to win, they sat back  defending a brief lead, instead of playing to win.

Upset? - not at all.

Amused? - sure.

I find it amusing when Australians fly an Australian flag in Australia.

Doesn't upset me in the slightest, though.

Go Croatia!
