ABC spends millions on web ads
May 24th, 2018 at 2:20pm

I'm not an ABC basher, but this is just farkd.

ABC spends $2 million a year buying Facebook and Google promotion

Chief financial officer Louise Higgins revealed the broadcaster's annual expenditure on Facebook advertising was about $1.4 million, as well as the $500,000 it would spend boosting Google search results this year.

Last year the ABC spent $440,000 on Google keywords, Ms Higgins told a Senate committee.

The ABC needs to be careful.

They advertise Radio National as a national radio station, when in fact its only live on the east coast.

That's a lot of money spent which will get pumped directly offshore and not even taxed here.

I'm also dubious that it's an effective for of advertising for ABC

ABC has a large online presence and a lot of new product. Seems like a sensible spend.

Smiley

ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie, formerly a high-ranking Google executive, was not at this week's Senate hearings but has previously dismissed critics of the broadcaster's advertising spend.

Do you know whether or not it is effective?

If no one watches the ABC, then its a bit hard for them to continue justifying their existence at taxpayer's expense.

Allocating part of their budget for promoting their product is a no-brainer.

2 million directly overseas and not taxed in Australia.

Cross promotion on their own platforms should be enough.

I don't know really know what you are talking about Gordon. The money is being spent to try and get people to watch their programs, it has nothing to do with tax.

Tax payers money being sent directly over seas and two companies which don't even pay tax in this country.

Comercial entities can spend their money how they please but when taxpayers money is at stake,  more care should be taken.

I also feel cross promotion across ABCs extensive network should be sufficient

Taxpayers are forking out over $1 billion a year for the ABC we should get a say in how they piss it up against the wall.
