What disgusting journalism.

The comparisons to port Arthur are not necessary, let alone a table alongside looking like some macabre football ladder.

What a misleading wankfest this thread is

Guns are not banned in Australia but their ownership is tightly controlled

It appears this tragedy occurred on a property in Western Australia. It is not uncommon for property owners to be granted gun licenses on their properties

To try and compare this with a mass shooting as say Port Arthur is totally ludicrous

Where do you get this unadulterated sh.t from?

This is an incredibly rare incident for this country
Unlike th US - where it is a daily passtime

Gun control legislation has WORKED

It is the the one legacy of the Howard Government
- that has majority support

School Shooting in Kentucky Was Nation’s 11th of Year. It Was Jan. 23.

John Howard's Gun Laws are the triumph of good sense and whether you like him or not he is a genuine bona fide Australian HERO for bringing those Gun Laws in

He has saved literally who knows how many lives by preventing us from going 'all the way with the U.S.A.'

When Howard was fighting to get those Gun Laws in, he faced enormous opposition from our own Gun Lobby and self interested Parties. But he fought on and with massive support from the Public  at large made his Gun Laws iron clad

Everytown is not a credible source for school shootings they included a shooting in a school that has been closed and has no students.

The everytown link shows the black gun homicide victim rate is 30.7 per 100K compared to the white rate at 2.4 per 100k

Quote:
Black men are 13 times more likely than non-hispanic white men to be shot and killed with guns.
Black Americans make up 14 percent of the U.S. population9

but are victims of more than half of all gun homicides.10

https://everytownresearch.org/gun-violence-by-the-numbers/#BlackAmericans

Not sure why gun grabbers bring up the USA when mass shootings occur they never cite New Zealand gun laws because NZ allow all the scary black semi autos with silencers. NZ has had no mass shootings since 1997 we have had 2, NZ had their last school shooting 95 years ago.

Since this ABC article cited JAMA lets see what they say about our gun laws.

Quote:
Conclusions

Following the enactment of gun law reforms in Australia in 1996, there were no mass firearm killings through May 2016. There was a more rapid decline in firearm deaths between 1997 and 2013 compared with before 1997, but also a decline in total nonfirearm suicide and homicide deaths of a greater magnitude. Because of this, it is not possible to determine whether the change in firearm deaths can be attributed to the gun law reforms.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2530362

So what caused non firearm homicides to decline by a far greater magnitude compared to firearm homicides did our gun laws also reduce non firearm homicides?

And in the USA, mass shootings like this occur over once a day on average. Here in australia it is limited to every few years.

A clever person - is not a 2" gun lover - sees this as a success for our gun laws.

WA has the toughest gun laws in Australia have they established whether this person had a valid firearms license or an illegal gun?

The ABC included a list of mass shootings before Port Arthur most of them were family shootings, the police said there was no further danger to the public with this shooting yet for some reason people think family shootings were a danger to public safety before 1996.

How many of these were family shootings in the list compiled by the ABC, since mass shootings are a single event why do people include 5 day killing sprees in that list?

Thats bullshit there have been around 95 mass shootings in the USA since 1982 according to the leftist group Mother Jones.

A full list here, if we use Simon Chapman and Philip Alpers unique definition of 5 or more killed which nobody else uses would that reduce this number by a significant amount?

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/12/mass-shootings-mother-jones-full-da...

Of course the hoplophobic gun grabbers always point to the USA they never cite New Zealand gun laws because NZ allow all the guns we restricted they haven't had any mass shootings since 1997, NZ gun laws work you can't argue with the fact they don't have mass shootings.

most people who own guns are sensible law abiding people   but every once in a while something as awful as this happens   and we are sent reeling....4 children  what on earth drives anyone to do such a thing is beyond me.......there is so much out there today in the way of help...no matter what the problem  there is help out there........yet it isnt enough.......

the family  friends and neighbours will need a lot of help.......my heart goes out to them.....

lets not blame guns... its the mental state of the person whos responsible .. you couldnt be in your right mind to do something like this. Sad Sad Sad

It hasn't been established if this person legally owned the guns.

A woman in Cairns killed 8 with a knife if this person used a knife instead of a gun would people be blaming knives and calling for knife control or would they be talking about mental illness?

Thats because clowns like you love to find statistics that support your case by redefining the standards. since 1982 over a MILLION people have died from guns in the USA. Choosing to cherry-pick 'mass' shootings is the idiocy that your kind routinely employ.

Actually, it isnt a mental health issue. Stats from the USA that most mass shootings are NOT done by the mentally ill although such a claim is subjective at best since even engaging in such a think would seem to imply a level of mental disturbance. But in the case of previously-diagnosed mental illness, almost non of the mass shootings are done by such people. Why this is important is because our sexually impotent fun lovers like to claim that it is mental illness driving mass shootings when in fact, it is the EXISTENCE of guns which is the problem. anyone and everyone can be subject to a temporary breakdown (see the movie Falling Down). Our responsibility is to ensure that when such things happen that they dont have easy and unrestricted access to plenty of military grade assault weapons.

To get an idea of how well gun control works, compare media reports of convenience store holdups in Australia vs the US. I don;t recall anyone ever dying in one in Australia, mainly because there are rarely guns involved. Same crime, but less risk of death. In fact, they often don't even get away with the crime here because they are chased off.

You would think that was obvious and a proof in its own right... but to a gunlover, there is no proof possible.

this isnt about America.... we are nothing like Americans   who think guns are a normal accessory.. they buy their kids guns for their birthdays...

we have a completely different attitude to guns... and we dont give everyone the same rights to own one....

and I do not agree this was an act of someone in a normal state of mind........ to kill 4 children  is not a normal act.. even for Americans....

anyone who gets a gun and uses it to destroy others... has mental issue....short of being a hired killer   who lives with no empathy or conscience whatever.. in other words ......stone cold...

With armed robbery retail stores are about 25% of the victims should we disregard the other 75% of armed robberies?

Angelo Cusamano died after being shot with a pistol stolen from a security guard he owned a shop called the gamesman I was a customer of his.

About 18% of our armed robberies involve a firearm, bats clubs syringes bottles and glasses combined account for about 10% of all armed robberies.
https://aic.gov.au/publications/facts/2014/recorded-crime

If you pull a gun on someone and rob them it's armed robbery even if you don't pull the trigger therefore defensive gun use must include those times where a criminal surrenders without a shot being fired, there are over 2.5 million cases of defensive gun use every year in the USA. If the USA were stupid enough to copy our gun laws they would have over 2.5 million more victims of crime every year.

There were 640,000 guns confiscated with the buyback.

In NSW with the recent amnesty guns could be surrendered to police or gun shops to be sold or registered.
Quote:
So far, 11,305 firearms have been handed in for registration, sale or destruction across NSW.

Of those, 3579 firearms and firearm-related items have been surrendered to police for destruction or registration.

Anyone with an unregistered firearm or firearm-related item can legally dispose or register it without penalty until September 30 at approved drop-off points, which include licensed firearm dealers, mobile stations and police stations.

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/hills-shire-times/thousands-of-guns-...

So with NSW 3579 were surrendered for destruction and 7726 firearms were surrendered to be sold and registered.

Of course not. Please make up some more stats for us.

Try clicking on the AIC link i provided for the stats, 18% of all armed robberies are done with firearms with 28% being retail premises.

Yes by criminals with unregistered/illegal firearms.

Our responsibility is to ensure that when such things happen that they dont have easy and unrestricted access to plenty of military grade assault weapons.

this isnt about America.... we are nothing like Americans

The gun grabbers always mention the USA with guns even though we are probably much closer to New Zealand for culture.

New Zealand has had no mass shootings since 1997 they never cite their laws because they allow all the guns with silencers that we restricted in 1996.

The gun grabbers never cite laws that work anywhere else in the world because they want to confiscate and ban guns.

How many people died fo howards political posturing to remove guns from a country that had no gun problem.

Hear hear.
Left handed bryant shot from his right hip.
Key whitnesses ignored if their story didn't mimic the msm.
Name released illegally.
Held in solitary for months illegally.

One only has to listen to the recording of Bryant with the negotiator and hear the guns shots in the background. Shots fired at the police. How could Bryant fire a weapon in another room away from the phone and still be talking on the phone with the negotiator only to have thrown the gun out the window onto the shed roof after a misfired round that damaged the breach?

This was a defence lawyers dream case. Another Erine Brockovich moment.

John Howard didn't take any guns 'off the streets' - he stole them from legally licenced and generally law-abiding citizens under false pretences, and the States piled in and made a mockery of 'domestic violence laws' by distorting law to such an extent that anyone was guilty by accusation, and any licenced firearms they had could be removed by regulation - NOT by law!

The direct and real result was more illegal firearms on the streets, and all in the hands of criminals, often with no concept of civilised behaviour or code of honour as the old-time crims used to have, such as you don't rob or violate ordinary folk - you only rob the robbers and thieves such as the banks and insurance companies that cover them - hello Royal Commission.

It was an act of violence and even of civil war against the ordinary people of this nation, with the clear intention of removing from them any means of self-defence, and particularly against any oppressive or despotic moves by government.  The results are available daily to the casual observer in the utter dominance of the common people by their  'government' and their government's mates who want to run the show for their own best profit.

Pure despotism writ large.

Not only that but this false application of the rule of law started the current war between men and women, which is causing more and more casualties on a daily basis on ALL sides - not least among the children who are becoming so borderline in their social attitudes that those hardly exist any more, and are increasingly replaced with television behaviour.  Many children these days are clearly suffering from borderline personality disorder, since they have no solid grounding in basic civilities and codes of behaviour.

So who was the offender was it the daughter, grandmother or grandfather?

Quote:
Police are treating the incident as a murder-suicide and have confirmed they are not looking for any suspects.

A friend of the family has confirmed to the ABC that Katrina Miles and her four children were among the seven victims.

The friend confirmed that Katrina's parents, whose names are listed on the property title as Peter and Cynda Miles, were also killed in the incident.

You sure you're not confusing thefts with robberies?

It hasn't been established if this person legally owned the guns.

A woman in Cairns killed 8 with a knife if this person used a knife instead of a gun would people be blaming knives and calling for knife control or would they be talking about mental illness?

Can you name some mass killings done with a knife in Australia?

It hasn't been established if this person legally owned the guns.

A woman in Cairns killed 8 with a knife if this person used a knife instead of a gun would people be blaming knives and calling for knife control or would they be talking about mental illness?

Can you name some mass killings done with a knife in Australia?

Quote:
11 August 1978 – John Ernest Cribb raped Valda Connell before stabbing her and two of her children, Sally and Damien Connell, at Swansea, NSW.

Quote:
10 July 2001 – Sef Gonzales bashed, stabbed and strangled his sister Clodine, mother Mary and father Teddy within a two-and-a-half hour time frame in their North Ryde home in Sydney, NSW.

Quote:
8 November 2010 – Kapunda triple murder – Jason Alexander Downie repeatedly stabbed and killed Andrew, Rose and Chantelle Rowe in a frenzied attack at their home in Kapunda, South Australia.[101][102]

Quote:
19 December 2014 – Cairns child killings – Eight children aged between 18 months to 15 years were stabbed to death in a home in Cairns, Queensland.

Got ask why the Cairns murderer was not named in this statistic?

Anyways in this list there are plenty of stabbings, axings & bludgeoning murders .....

some not enmasse but others could be considered so.

Of course not. Please make up some more stats for us.

Try clicking on the AIC link i provided for the stats, 18% of all armed robberies are done with firearms with 28% being retail premises.

I'll wait till you make a point first.

we could make the arguement that if guns were involved these incidents would have been made far worse. Regardless, Howards gun buy back and alleged uniform gun control laws were and are a sham.

Howard's buy back was solely to disarm law abiding citizens, Australia's criminals still have access to semi - autos as they always have.

Howard successfully used wedge politics through out his time as PM, he was and still is a filthy grub of a man

He is a traitor to this country.

Problem with Australians is they are scared. Scared weak little children that can't think for themselves. 90% of Australians react with hysterics. Look at longweakend and the like. Hysteria over fkkk all most of the time and they beg for more laws???? Fkkn crazy, and they believe that taking all the guns off the honest people will stop guns getting into the hands of criminals. How dumb are they? I tried to tell the idiot that semi autos are still all around us....it's just their head is so far up their own arse that they can't put 2 and 2 together.

Its been shown over and over that there is a direct correlation between homicide, suicide  rates and levels of gun ownership
Quote:
The purpose of the present study is to examine the link between gun ownership rates and homicide rates. Using a very large cross-sectional survey dataset in order to obtain estimates for household-level gun ownership rates, and state-level data on homicides, the results indicate that gun ownership rates have a statistically significant and positive effect on the homicide rates at the 10% significance level. This result suggests that efforts to restrict access to firearms may reduce murders.

10% is somewhat risky. 5% is better. More than 10% is bilge.

"Significance levels are used to reject the null hypothesis that, for example, there is no correlation between variables, there is no difference between groups, or there is no change between treatments. A significance level of '0.05' is conventionally used in the social sciences, although probabilities as high as '0.10' as well as lower probabilities may also be used. Probabilities greater than '0.10' are rarely used. A significance level of '0.05', for example, indicates that there is a 5% probability that the results are due to chance. A significance level of '0.10' indicates a 10% probability that the results are due to chance. Thus, using significance levels above '0.10' is rather "risky", while using lower significance levels is "safer"."

The number of firearm license holders and registered firearms has nearly doubled since 1996 while our population has increased from 18 to 24 million people.

We have 1,973,522 firearm license holders with 5,798,980 registered firearms in Australia.
Page 63 for numbers- https://www.acic.gov.au/sites/g/files/net1491/f/2016/10/crimtrac_ar_2015-16_fina...

In Australia more legally owned firearms has resulted in less firearm homicides and suicides, an inconvenient truth.

Firearm deaths were declining before our 1996 gun laws, in 1980 the firearm homicide rate was 0.8 per 100k it declined to 0.3 per 100K by 1995, what caused this pre existing decline in all firearm deaths before our 1996 gun laws?

This result suggests that efforts to restrict access to firearms may reduce murders.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13504850701675508?journalCode=rael20

Firearm deaths were declining before our 1996 gun laws, in 1980 the firearm homicide rate was 0.8 per 100k it declined to 0.3 per 100K by 1995, what caused this pre existing decline in all firearm deaths before our 1996 gun laws?
http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/productsbytitle/9C85BD1298C075EACA2568A9...
Not firearm deaths. Homicides.

Surely you are not trying to argue there are less homicides from reasons other than guns because there are less guns?

Because that would be a new level of stupid in this debate.

But not unprecedented.

Howard and the anti-gun hysterics argued that the gun laws were a complete success because there was a drop in gun suicides after '97, totally ignoring the fact that suicides had increased overall.

Gun ownership hasn't dropped. Someone is pulling your chain if they say they have.

Homocides involving firearms were on the decline well before 96. Don't swallow the bullshite from the howard lovers.

Its been shown over and over that there is a direct correlation between homicide, suicide  rates and levels of gun ownership

Sorry Baron but that's just BS.

he did clean it up  for a while.... how many guns were taken off the  streets????... they would still be out there  if there hadnt been a buyback....

30.000 guns were handed in during the amnesty....as well..

come on these guns are never more....

there will always be loonies out there    and the more guns out there the more chance they will get their hands on one...

the fewer the harder it is...

Most of the 30000 guns handed in were not worth what govco paid for them.

Several people I know handed in their old guns and bought new guns.

I think if you check the records

There are probably more guns now than before the amnesty.

And one small note of interest
Wasn't at least one of the handed in guns used in a gun crime?
I remember reading about it, but can't for the life of me remember the details.

I'll bet the number is less than howards IS.

they showed someone handing in a rifle on TV &
it was immediately crushed in a hydraulic press if front of them.

Funny how in Sweden and Finland

Every household has at least one gun

But DEATH by gun is lower than Australia.

howard  thought his gun laws would give him power.

Just as other despots have done in the past

Hitler, Mussolini  to name two

Then they proceeded to take over as despots do.

howard  thought he could do the same, but failed

The only good thing that howard  will ever do for the world is die

With his passing, the world will become a much better place.

Do you think it is just a coincidence when you read about Aussie drug addicts holding up a convenience store with a knife or machete and getting chased off, then read about an American drug addict killing someone or getting killed while holding up a convenience store with a gun?

Valkie you get the booby prize for that response

Clearly, the Gun Control Laws have been an outstanding success

The Gun Laws had nothing nothing to do with Politics, in fact at the time John Howard was getting a furious backlash from the Gun Lobby

Are you truly putting up an argument that if we didn't have gun control that the homicide rate would go down?

As a retired Police officer I find that laughable. Given the choice about going out into the Community where everyone is armed to the teeth and having the current status quo every cop I have ever known would choose the status quo

Nice use of hysterics, "everyone armed to the teeth".  Grin Grin

Gun deaths were reducing consistently for the previous 10 - 20 years anyway, why would the magically reverse?

Gun control was about people control and the start of wedge politics and nothing else.

Law abiding gun owners

Unionists

Refugees

It did prove the average Australia was a gullible idiot.

So
Let me get this right
Every Australian cop has a gun right?
And by your own argument every one of them is a potential shooter in the making?

Guns are a tool
Like a chainsaw or rabbit trap to a farmer
Legal gun ownership is not a problem in this country
Only salivating , screaming  cowards like howard  fear gun ownership.

Illegal gun ownership is however a problem.
And gun laws are as effective against illegal gun ownership as are ICAC investigations into petrol sorting ( just bovine feaces)

At this point I might add, I personally don't like guns
I don't own one and never will.
a gun is a cowardly weakling tool, one used by anyone who has not the ability to fight like a man.

Our nanny state and country are gradually making everything illegal
guns, knives, nail files etc etc.

That is because the cowards in power know that eventually we people will stand up to them, and when we do, we won't need guns.

Because they are druggies
Off their face, the bottom of the barrel low life.
They wouldn't spend the money they would rather inject into their veins on a gun because, even if they did, they wouldn't know how to use it.

How hard do you think it is to get a gun?

ACA tried a few years back, ant it took them less than an hour.

Just ask a cop, you will ave one in less than that

When was the last time the said "druggie" had a spare 5k (illegal firearms aren't free) laying around to blow on a gun? They barely have $5 to scrape together for an ice break coffee milk.
A syringe is available from their last hit.
Machetes are sold at bcf therefore can be stolen pretty easy.
Spearguns.....cashies for 20 bucks.
Knives are in the kitchen draw.
Cricket bats are 5 bucks on gumtree or better still flog one from the next door neighbours kid..

It's not the druggies that have the illegal firearms.... their suppliers do though...hence the druggie gets a 12guage shoved in their face if they don't pay their tick bill.

Because guns are expensive so they use a syringe because the taxpayer supplies them free of charge.

They cant be both. If they are prevalent amongst criminals as the claim is made then they mus be relatively cheap to obtain also. If they are expensive then they must be scarce.

Australia will never be like the USA.

The 'region' of North America is much like in association with the region of the Middle-East.
North America is Politics (Police) and Middle-East is Military (Soldier) ...culturally/empowerment.
Both are 'associated' closely as Health (Europe) and Fitness (Asia) are.
Both are 'associated' closely as Food (Oceania) and Farming (Africa) are.
Both are 'associated' closely as Religion (South America) and Art (Sahul ...aka Australia).

So you see.
Australia (Sahul) will never be like America.
Middle-East is the most Military (WAR) region on the planet ...and historically. Police are similar to Soldiers - for one thing,
they both have 'guns'.

DEATH
in Australia will never be a 'Gun issue'.
Howard was just famous for putting a Band-Aid on a minor scratch here ...while
SUICIDE
was wrecking havoc in Australia.

ICE IS FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN GUNS HERE.

...it is, of course, the most
'poisonous'
country on the planet.  Wink

Black market guns are cheap in places like the US, and expensive in places like Australia where they are heavily regulated.

That's why so many Americans die after some druggie or wannabe gangster moron gets their hands on a gun.

In other words, gun control works.

The police did kill one and injure 4 in the Lindt siege.

The police wounded 3 women in Hornsby while shooting one offender- http://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/crime/police-shoot-and-kill-knifeman-at-...

I would suggest people run for cover if they see police pulling out their guns they shoot a lot of innocent bystanders.

The police have to approve every firearms license and every firearms purchase from licensed gun owners, the firearms act 1996 says the commissioner of police has to be satisfied the person is no danger to public safety before issuing a firearms license.

Do you think it is just a coincidence when you read about Aussie drug addicts holding up a convenience store with a knife or machete and getting chased off, then read about an American drug addict killing someone or getting killed while holding up a convenience store with a gun?

If drug addicts are holding people up for a fix it sounds like a good argument to follow Portugal and legalise and tax the sale of drugs.

An excellent article on ending drug war to cut gun crime, we have a frightening amount of drug dealers caught with guns in Australia.

ah, so your argument is that illegal guns are expensive and also easy to obtain, is that correct? Or would you like the opportunity to rethink your position?

weve had that discussion. Some, posters here think that would result in large scale drug addiction with people becoming addicts after one hit of marijuana, turning psycho and Australia becoming some sort of large scale Mad Max style battleground. Plus "FACT" smoking dope makes you grow tits, we all know that.

Sounds about right.. matches well with our current governance by psycho of this nation.... nothing different, just a little enhancement in the current insanity that runs the show.   Cool

No....if you have the money then it wouldn't be that hard to find a willing salesman. Can you understand that?
Nothing saying it is cheap. Nothing saying it is hard to find. Just that, like everything, if you have the money then getting in contact with someone will be a lot easier than If you have no money and are just "asking around".
In doing this though you have just invited dogs to lay in your bed....so expect the fleas that will follow.

This mentality of "drugos/junkies are armed" is something made up. That's why they hold up shops with syringes etc.
Their dealers and the dealers suppliers, sure, they would have some contacts. They "normally" dont use the substances they sell and are more "buisiness" minded.....but a usless druged out junkie/user.....no way.

How many drug addicts "have the money" Caveman?

In Australia they do. In America they buy a cheap hundgun (thanks NRA), or 'borrow' one, hold up a store, and if they are having a bad night they kill some innocent person or get shot themselves.

as with anything if something is in ready supply it is cheap, illegal guns are not plentiful as you suggest but quite difficult to obtain. There are no illegal gun dealers with inexhaustible caches of semi autos just sitting waiting for the right buyer with wads of cash. Just as drug dealers move their product quickly as possible at prevailing market price to obtain profit. I swear, most of you are completely brainwashed by television.

this is simple freemasonic narrative ..

the NRA has nothing to do with criminals using the black market to obtain illegal weapons .... if the people are armed then they can protect themselves and children from criminals

Let me get this right

On the one hand, we are to believe that gun laws, designed to prevent as many people as possible from not owning a gun, are a good thing because we CANNOT trust people to do the right and sensible thing because they are typically incapable.

But on the other hand, we are to believe that drug laws, designed to prevent people from accessing dangerous mind altering drugs, are a bad thing because we CAN trust people to do the sensible thing and self regulate the use of mind altering drugs because they are capable.

There appears to be somewhat of a contradiction here.

We can either trust people or not
And putting mind altering drugs into the mix certainly  complicates things, does it not?

The ones I've known wouldn't touch the crap. It's buisiness.
"Don't get high on your own supply". Ever heard that before?

Maybe that's why you meet these "user" folk. You work in some kind of recovery unit for addicts or something don't you? Maybe these folk are the stupid ones i mention. Flashing their money. Driving a merc. Living in a flash house....all the while claiming a disability pention or something similar. Using their merchandise a little. Not really covering any tracks. Care factor of some kind of untouchable drug lord but in reality just a scared weak nobody who is trying hard.

What about the ones that you don't meet?
The smart ones. The ones you wouldn't even consider....and the people they sell to would probably blow your mind. People in, pardon the pun, really high places. I'm sure they have help from those people in high places too. Seen it first hand champ so you can draw your conclusion on dealers using....but what you are dealing with is the small time addict dealer.....not the buisinessmen.
