I would only take issue with your 'never served my country'. Since the end of the War in the Pacific there hasn't been an armed conflict that has had the remotest justification in terms of protecting Australia's security.

As running-dogs to America's whistle, we've been here, there, and damned near everywhere, but not any of it has had anything to do with making our society a more secure country to live in ~ indeed, the contrary can be argued quite convincingly. We helped America beat a whole series of hornets' nests to the effect we now have 'refugees' from these parts who want to blow us up in our own streets.

So, you're saying Australia doesn't need America?

But 42 dead is 42 too many in a guerrilla war that sees no end and has achieved bugger-all.

As David Oldfield and others have been heard to say: "Bring our boys home".

'Policing' the Middle Eastern 'trouble spots' could go on for centuries for as long as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Pakistan are allowed to finance and encourage the mischief-makers over there.

Well said, but for me the greatest Australian heroes are the humble workers who pay their taxes, year in year out, and keep Australia functioning and on the move. The Garbo who collects my rubbish in the dark of the pre-dawn is a hero to me as I lie there in my comfortable bed.
