Executing murderers is just. By murdering, they have placed themselves OUTSIDE the law, including the protection of the law (which is thee first purpose of the law). Putting themselves outside the law, unprotected by it, they could be violated by anyone without punishment (outlaws are not under the protection of the law, by definition).

But the law doesn't want to sanction extra-legal murders therefore it will sanction capital punishment for those who have placed themselves outside the law by murdering someone else, or some other punishment, fitting the circumstances of the case.

My Polish friend and workmate was a guard at Dachau after the war where all SS personnel were imprisoned to await interrogation.

Also conflicted

I don't so much have an issue with the hypocrisy or the barbaric nature, for me it is the fact that a huge percentage of those executed have been later found to have been innocent.

The more high profile and worse the case the more likely it is to convict the wrong person.
