We speak to God in the halls of parliament and they change the law to gay marriage based on a non-binding postal survey: that is very very very strange stuff !

The rugby were very careful to make sure they won't the first fascists to curtail the idea of free speech but yet when the postal survey was on the NO vote weren't allwed to say anything and that, as we both know, is a pure fact!

THE HYPOCRISY IS WRIT LARGE IN THIS VERY CASE!

Anyone who gets all hysterical about what other people say will happen to them after they die needs to harden up. I think Israel is onto a winner here. I saw an article on the ABC online today still desperately scrabbling for some kind of moral wrong Israel committed.

It isn't Falou - he is just quoting the scriptures that all Christians supposedly believe.

Freedom of religion means that he is entitled to have this belief irrespective of how silly the rest of us think it is.

What's worst is that Bernadi defended Folau's comments.

Yes they should remain silent just like most were when Anthony Mundine said gays should be executed, where was the outrage over Mundines comments?

The left wing have truly lost the plot, A Black Christian, posts that his faith says that homosexuality is a sin that results in the sinner going to hell.

Hardly a newsflash, that one has been out in book form for over three thousand years I think.

The shamelessly brazen double standards on display is simply breathtaking.

If it had been some Ali OopsInearlytoldthetruthaheed, they would have been falling over themselves to provide excuses and justifications for why he would say such a thing, but much more importantly, how crucial it is for our social cohesion to have the rest of us, respect his cultural and religious right to express such deeply held principles, in our free and fair society.

When Christopher Hitchens asked Waleed Aly to share his beliefs on homosexuality as a modern, progressive muslim man, how he responded was very enlightening, because firstly when he refused to say what he believed, and then later when he'd composed a suitable obfuscation he was happy with.

I was disgusted to see him blatantly lie about what Islam is, with his saying something along the lines of, Islam is not about rules, but rather it is an ongoing conversation.

I have had ZERO respect for him since that night, and keenly point out if he is the best and brightest of the modern, progressive muslim, then I want nothing to do with them.

They do not say what they mean, and they do not mean what they say, unless emboldened to let down their guard whilst amidst a hate spewing mob.

...and yet Mr Folau did a year of 'Gay'FL.

Maybe he's a bit bitter that he didn't even scratch the surface in the BIG/FAST Man's game?
Then again, when has any 'yellow pineapple Polynesian' been able to crack it in AFL in any great way?

While i think gay marriage is a good thing so "spouses" can get their rights, i do think that some other force has caused our government to allow it. Perhaps the UN putting on the pressure? I dont know but it came out of left field when it came.

It is, even though our Politicians are acting less democratically than ever....look at the history of the Banking Royal Commission, for example.

Folau is pissed that people have not agreed with his crap, condemned his crap, and the Union people have rushed to support him for their own selfish reasons.  The guy is a God bothering gibberer, and there is no reason why anyone ought take a flea schit's notice of what he says on any issue other than Sport.

Absolutely, the problem is with people who crap on about free speech on a constant basis (e.g. David Leyonhjelm) is that they 1 .seem to only give a crap about their right to free speech 2. ignore the fact that free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequence or thinking before you open your mouth.

Was waiting for you to say this. He never actually specifically said this statement. His biogrpaher Evelyn Hall did as a summary of his ideas.

It doesn't matter a tinker's dam who originally said it. It is a powerful idea that has stood the test of time when one refers to freedom of speech

And I support it totally

What I don't support is generations of Politicians and Lawyers f......g around with Laws that interfere with the basic premise of Freedom of Speech

It is not a Statute it is an idea, a Principle

I knew immediately Aussie would be rushing to the Law Books for all sorts of reasons why we shouldn't have freedom of speech..NO NEED really is there?

You blithely say that as though it is protected in Australia.  It is not.

"Freedom of speech" does not mean "Say/post (even at OzPol) whatever you like."

Especially in Australia.

Few such are 'original' - I personally produce many witty turns of phrase etc -but I always feel that someone elsewhere has at least once said the same thing.  It is inevitable that some should have said the same things in perhaps different ways - but they are not generally heard beyond a small group.

Anyway - I doubt Folau is annoyed that people don't agree - I'd say he is annoyed that people attack him for holding that view - something that I personally feel is worth a passing glance and moving on.  It's his view - O-Ok - next!

We need to be wary of according to every view some form of 'grading' in the broad social context, over its 'morality' or its 'right' or 'wrong'...... the simple fact is that at the end of the day, it is mostly the views of the majority that will hold sway one way or the other.

Honestly - this was worth no more than a passing look.... thank you, Israel - noted - today's cocky cage floor....

Contrare Aussie. I did not not say that Freedom of Speech is protected in Australia

Disgustingly IT IS NOT...WHY?????

In the last Labor Government Stephen Conroy Labor Communications Minister came hair raisingly close to bringing in a Star Chamber to vet comments on sites such as this

In reality he wanted to Censor Free Speech. Thankfully that dirty little in grate got booted out when L:abor lost the Election

We came perilously close to something akin to Nazis Germany, I sh.t you not

Whilst things have become routine we are pathetic in not demanding that Freedom of Speech be part of our Constitution

Mr Baron....really....fair dinkum mate....your hysterical hyperbole expressed in crass cliched jingoism is appalling and at best pathetic.  Give it up.

I disagree with what seems to be your proposition that everyone has the right to say what they like, whenever, wherever they personally choose.  For example......for example.......if what you want is made reality, we might as well dispose of laws concerning defamation, and invasion of privacy, etc.

So

Freedom of speech is restricted to the 3% of the vocal minority

The 97% of normal humans are not allowed to voice their opinions in any way.

I see......

And so says the forum weasel in flowery prose commensurate with a wannabe celebrity who is reduced to the position of cabby.......

Yes, well he is getting that isn't he Aussie

The point is he is entitled to speak freely, last time I checked  this is a Democracy

Are you saying the massive public reaction is overblown?

It would be handy to have a more codified freedom of speech to protect people like Gerald Fredrick Töben.

Jayzuz Effendi?  Really?  Do you reckon Members here have no memory?  That bloke has been done to death here.  Do you reckon some great big shining light of excellence or enlightenment way beyond you is suddenly going to descend upon your repetition of the same old same old?

Gawd!

He was jailed for denying the holocaust. You invented some tortured mental gymnastics to say he was jailed for whatever the title of the charge was, which meant you could not bring yourself to say what it was he actually did. Everyone told you you were wrong, because you were wrong. You forgot that bit.

Toben is a perfect example of Voltaire's philosophy.

Denying the holocaust is speech. Free speech has been eroded already and its a slippery slope
