Union body that campaigns for workers’ rights accused of operating call center sweatshop

HAVING launched an aggressive campaign against nasty employers with casualised workforces, the ACTU has now been accused of being a horrible boss itself by its own call centre workers.

A leaked email has accused the peak union body of hypocrisy in its treatment of employees with allegations ranging from paying workers late and incorrect wages to cutting shifts with less than 24 hours notice, leaving some with no income.

The litany of complaints about conditions at call centres at the last federal election emerged in a leaked email and include examples of the very practices the ACTU has savaged in its national “Change the Rules” campaign designed to boost union membership.

The call centres were set up to reach unionists in marginal seats in the lead up to the last election and was run for the ACTU, then under the leadership of Ged Kearney, now a Labor MP, by CFMEU employee and Labor’s candidate for the seat of Banks, Chris Gambian, via a company he owns, Grassroots and Co. Staff were employed by the ACTU which has campaigned for years on worker rights and against casualisation and is pushing for more secure jobs and better pay under its current campaign led by ACTU secretary Sally McManus.

Ms McManus recently said reversing workforce casualisation was a top priority this year. “One of the key things we want to change for working people is turning around or reversing the casualisation of jobs,” she said.

The call centre complaints were detailed in a September 16, 2015 email from employee Matthew Boon Meng Ng, who was National Deputy Director of Interns Australia.

“In the two months the ACTU call centre has been active we’ve seen a neglect of our rights for the dignity of permanent work, no information on our working rights, regular working hours or length of employment, morning shifts cut with less than 24 hours notice, for some of us reducing our sole income to next to nothing, incorrect pay and or late payments,” he wrote.

“This is out right hypocrisy from the ACTU and Chris Gambian which often fights against unfair and non-genuine casualisation and for a clear path to full-time permanent work.”

The ACTU rejected claims of hypocrisy, saying the workers were “genuine” casuals engaged for a fixed-term project. “They were paid well above award wage and were treated at all times in accordance with Australian workplace law. Any suggestion to the contrary is false,” a spokesperson said.

Mr Gambian said: “These assertions are 100 per cent false. I’ve always stood up for workers and protected their rights,” he said.

Mr Ng’s email also complains about no clear management structure, no advice of future employment, no information from the award and “broken or missing equipment essential to carry out our work.” The issues prompted the employees to attempt to unionise under the United Services Union.

The ACTU runs call-centres before elections to identify union sympathisers to assist with campaigning.

* No information on our working rights, regular working hours or length of our employment

* Morning shifts cut within less than 24 hours notice, for some of us reducing our sole income to next to nothing

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)
