I have often thought that. I recall watching the 1986 Commonwealth Games as a 7-year-old, thinking that Darren Clark would have to win the 400m since he was a good runner at the LA Olympics. Because he was up against mainly British athletes (many African nations boycotting the games) you would have thought Clark could have jogged it to gold. But Roger Black (one of my favourite 400m runners) caught Clark napping at 200m. Black then ran home in some 45.5 second time. Clark 46 seconds -- which is pedestrian.

Then the 1988 Olympics was shown. A great event to be broadcast. I recall wondering what happened to the English team. Was told by my father that they were in a combined Great Britain team. I did see that as a form of cheating... but whatever.

Basically, I figure that the Commonwealth Games is a redeemer games for all the losers at the Olympics. The Australian team had not been any real competitive team since Dehli's 2010 games. Since then, it has been disaster after disaster for Australia. Crap in 2012 Olympics. Ordinary at the Glasgow 2014 games. Crap (but understandable) at Rio 2016. There seemed to be a rebuilding period in 2017. And I think that this Games is a redemption for the Australian team. We could be heading into a good sporting period leading up to what I think should be a good Tokyo Olympics.

Did remind me of a time I was trying to walk home during New Year's celebrations. Crashing all over the place. All wobbly. Then finally collapsing on the Neville-Hewitt Bridge and passing out for 10 minutes. Waking up puking and then having to get up to walk another 10km. Hawkins showed more dignity after running 40km than I could walking drunk 5km.
