Thank God for the large flat screen TV. It has made a trip to the cinema redundant in most cases. I read somewhere that the USA produces 400 feature films a year. I don't know if there is any other country that comes close.

A few years back, the influence of American media was decried, but that was back before the coffee explosion and the adoption of African American salutations. Same thing happened in France, where they now eat more McDonald hamburgers than the famous old baguette sandwich.

I find big production US movies hard watch. The actors mostly seem to have come from the same stud-farm, and the productions are just a bit too slick. The plots are riddled with stuff I, at the least, have heard before, in some form.

I'll watch American movies, in the hope, something interesting will turn up, but more often than not I'll turn it off, and go play my guitar, or, (oh the mental energy it takes) read a book.

Might as well try panning for gold in the Yarra.

You mean Hunt for Red October? The sub movie? That was almost 30 years ago Herb.

Yes, and still as much a 'thriller' as any of the movies coming out of Hollywood today.

Hitchcock's Rear Window still has me watching it after all these years.

And many more of the Golden Oldies.

Age shall not weary them ...

NIGHT SUN

Julian Sands, Nastassia Kinski and a young Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Undeniably the most 'emmaculate' foreign film ever made.
Superb performances from all three actors.
Julian Sands nails it!
Julian Sands nails a young Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Young nobleman Baron Sergio Giuramondo, after discovering that his bride-to-be was the king's mistress, leaves Naples in disgust to become a monk. But his quest for perfect solitude is constantly interrupted by visitors hearing rumours that Sergio possesses miraculous powers, and by women who bet each other that they can successfully seduce him...

Time Bandits. A Terry Gilliam classic.

Actually, I just downloaded the first 4 of 5 episodes of Chernobyl. Horrific and all true.

"Criminal" is pretty good. I  normally get bored with movies and switch them off but that one lasted to the end.
