From detention to holiday destination — now Australia is helping turn Manus Island into a tourism hub
The Australian Government is helping develop a tourism industry on the Papua New Guinean island it detained asylum seekers on.
It is funding a study via aid contractor Abt Associates to review the tourism industry on Manus Island, "identifying its various strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities for growth".
The six-month adviser role is worth up to $146,000, plus allowances.

The detainees told us that it has no water and PNG heavies roam the island bashing people at random. Even former detainees couldn't make up their minds about Manus Island, the tropical paradise/hell.
Asylum seekers: activists warned over Manus detainees
“The constant claims of illegal maritime arrivals and advocates’ about their situation in Manus are nothing more than subterfuge,” Mr Dutton said.
“They have long claimed the Manus regional processing centre was a ‘hellhole’ — but the moment it was to be closed they demanded it be kept open.
“They claim to fear for their safety if they leave the RPC — but held no such fears for a long period of time as around 200 of them each and every day travelled to and from Lorengau township, some staying in the town for extended periods of time.”
