Victorians outdid themselves in 2014 by electing this rotten to the core government.

What a disgraceful mob of thieves and liars are the Victorian Premier and his tax payer rorting Ministers, who arrogantly sit their backsides on the plush seats of Government house.

One can only hope this state comes to its senses and landslides this worst ever state government from causing us further grief.

Three cheers ... Hip Hip HOORAY ! to Vic Liberal MP's Bernie Finn and Craig Ondarchie for saving our CFA volunteers. The Andrews Government is unravelling fast and that's a gift to all Victorians.The good guys got one back.

The Victorian opposition is “proud” to have broken parliamentary convention to vote down the government’s Country Fire Authority bill, a move described as “unprecedented” and a dirty “political trick”.

Liberal MPs Bernie Finn and Craig Ondarchie were provided a pairing on Good Friday for religious reasons, but walked back into the Legislative Council at the 11th hour to vote against the legislation.

“We are proud of what we’ve done in stopping Daniel Andrews’ efforts to try and destroy the great work that CFA volunteers do,” Shadow Attorney-General John Pesutto told reporters.

He said a “leadership group” had formed the plan.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula accused the MPs of hiding in their offices until Ms Pulford and Mr Dalidakis went, but Mr Finn said he had left the building and did not anticipate he’d be back until after Easter.

“When I left in the early hours of this morning, I did not anticipate being back this side of Easter,” he posted on Facebook.

“At 8am this morning, I received a call requesting my presence in the Chamber for one vote. I drove into Parliament, voted, then left.

“My objection to the sitting was not about me but rather the disrespect it showed Christians and Christianity.” He did not say if he had actually attended church.

Mr Pakula labelled the move “totally unprecedented”.

“Two Liberal MP’s asked for (what turned out to be) fake pairs for ‘religious observance’. They hid in their offices till Labor MP’s who paired them left the building. They then snuck back in for the vote,” he tweeted. There was a palpable “smugness” on the faces of key Liberal party members, Labor’s most senior upper house MP Gavin Jennings said.

“Those people who prayed in front of us and begged us to let them go returned after we’d given them a pair,” he told reporters.

“The death knell of this legislation was when they smugly returned to the parliament to betray parliamentary convention.” Reason MP Fiona Patten, who voted in support of the bill, labelled it “the dirtiest political trick I have ever seen in my 20 years around parliaments”. Opposition leader Matthew Guy praised the two MPs on social media and later accused Labor of trying to sneak the bill through parliament on Good Friday. It is the first time state parliament has sat on Good Friday. Prior to the vote, it appeared that the bill would pass after a marathon debate that started about 7pm on Thursday.

Premier Daniel Andrews had been optimistic earlier on Friday, saying it was a “great day” for Victorians.

The Andrews Labor government wants to make the CFA volunteer-only, merging paid firefighters with the MFB to make a much larger Fire Rescue Victoria.

Victoria’s opposition has reneged on parliamentary pairing arrangements and voted down a controversial bill to split the state’s Country Fire Authority.

State parliament sat on Good Friday for the first time today, after the government revived the bill this week.

Key crossbencher Rachel Carling-Jenkins, an Australian Conservatives MP, was absent from parliament due to illness, and the government appeared to have the numbers to push the bill through.

But the opposition broke pairing arrangements and voted the bill down.

Liberal MPs Craig Ondarchie and Bernie Finn were granted a pairing for religious reasons but walked back into the Legislative Council on Good Friday to vote against the changes.

The Andrews Labor government wants to make the CFA volunteer-only, merging paid firefighters with the MFB to make a much larger Fire Rescue Victoria.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the defeat of the bill was a victory for volunteers.

“Am so proud of my upper house colleagues and the MPs who stood up for our CFA today and defeated the Andrews Govt plan to smash it up. The Liberal Nationals will always stand up for volunteers against this bully of a Premier,” Mr Guy tweeted.

Earlier on Friday, he described the long-haul debate, which started at 7pm on Thursday and went through into Good Friday, as inappropriate.

“It’s not a day for parliament to be debating and fighting. It’s a day that we should be coming together to back the Royal Children’s Hospital,” he told reporters.

“The government is playing politics with the CFA on the day the CFA is out fundraising for the Royal Children’s Hospital.”

The Liberal MPs has requested pairs on religious grounds because the debate took place on Good Friday.

The government granted pairs and sent Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford and Small Business Minister Philip Dalidakis home, the Herald Sun reports.

But Mr Finn and Mr Ondarchie came back to the chamber when a vote was called for the bill to be read a third time and the bill was defeated 19-18.

Liberal MPs Craig Ondarchie and Bernie Finn were granted a pairing for religious reasons but walked back into the Legislative Council on Good Friday to vote against the changes.

Attorney General Martin Pakula accused the Coalition MPs of hiding in their offices until Ms Pulford and Mr Dalidakis left parliament.

“It started with Bernie Finn getting up saying that he felt physically sick working on Good Friday while Craig Ondarchie sat eyes closed praying saying it was his most religious day,” she said. “They have completely lost the trust and respect of the crossbench.”

The Herald Sun reported Labor upper house member Cesar Melham described the move as “dishonourable’.

“If you pair someone for a good reason then you honour that. These people are the most dishonourable people on earth,” Mr Melham said.

“If they truly are good Christians the only place waiting for them is hell.”

Liberal MP David Davis said the government’s pressure to push through the bill and have parliament sit on Good Friday was “simply disgraceful”, the Herald Sun reported.

A responsible decision by the Opposition. The consequences of the 199 days of leave entitlements are yet to fully realised in terms of workforce availability and financial impact. Until those aspects are worked through, Victoria will need firefighting volunteers aplenty. Half the paid workforce away for 6 months plus each year signals a need to double the worforce....at what cost? The rural areas take great pride in their volunteer firefighting and their interest centre on local priorities not city based power grabs. Good to see the Opposition is awake to the governments ever increasing list of dirty tricks.

So Labor tried to push through the bill on Good Friday knowing the Conservative Party member, who would vote against it, was sick and they had refused to offer him a pair. So the Liberals plotted to defeat Labor’s plot. Sounds fair enough to me. Seems Andrews couldn’t use our money to win this one.
