The by-election for the federal seat of Batman was marred by a last-minute scandal on Saturday, with reports elderly voters received phone calls telling them they did not have to vote.

In response, Labor launched a phone call and SMS blitz urging senior voters to attend polling centres.

Batman votes: Follow all the results here.
A campaign spokesman decried the move.

"Lying to elderly people is as low as it gets," he said.

"We're encouraging all Batman residents to ignore these dirty tricks and exercise their right to vote."

The electorate has a high proportion of elderly voters, who are traditionally more supportive of Labor.

Labor has declared victory in the Batman by-election, upsetting the Greens who were the favourites to win the inner-Melbourne seat and have now conceded defeat.

Yeah agree!

Actually I dont mind that Ged Kearney, she seems a quite sensible sort of person based on an interview I heard a couple of weeks back.

The Nurses union doesnt strike me as a real radical union background so lets see how she shapes up!

And its nice to see another female in parliament eh codsy!

I'm glad the Greens lost.
I wonder if DiNatale saying, helping Sth African farmers being persecuted and murdered by black Sth Africans to migrate here to save them, amounted to re-instituting the white Australia policy, pissed any voters off?

It bothered me.
I know lots of people in Batman, large numbers of my immediate family, and numerous friends live there, and while most support helping refugees, the thought that WHITE refugees should be excluded, is an abhorrent thought, and I hope that cost them the seat.

Elderly people don't have to vote, and they are mostly Labor, so while ringing them may have been a dirty trick, the info was not necessarily wrong.

That seems wrong.

"Voting is compulsory. If you are enrolled to vote, then you must vote in all Federal, State and local council elections, statutory elections and polls."

"There is no upper age limit to voting in Victoria. If you are aged 70 or over you are excused from voting in council elections. However, you will still be provided with a ballot pack and are welcome to vote."

Labor likely to win Batman by-election

Current ALP 'hero' Geraldine Kearney was at one time in her life a scab. Who would have thought that the head of the ACTU was also a scab.

The 'scab' who went to the top of the union movement

Ged Kearney's first experience of work involved under-aged scab labour in a pub.

Kearney, 46, who has been chosen to take over the role of president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions next year, had an unlikely introduction to the cause.

Her father was a publican in the working class Melbourne suburb of Richmond. ''Although he was a small businessman, he had a very strong social justice bent,'' Kearney recalls. ''He encouraged all of the staff to belong to the union. During the brewery strikes our workers would down tools and my father would support that, even though it affected our business.''

She adds: ''He was very lucky he had nine children. He used his own children as scab labour. We would work very hard during those strikes.''

Sure it's not as romantic as former PM Rudd living in a car in his formative years and being kept awake by Bessie the cow but ALP stories are the glue that holds the party together.

Ged Kearney is a phu*k'n hypocrite.

The ALP, the progressive party, the party of ideas, the workers' friend, is the only Australian political party to roast four young Australians in roof cavities. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

banning Australia Day

banning balloons

calling for more immigrants..

sticking their nosed into every Federal issue that is none of their concern...

just empty the bloody bins and sweep the sidewalk ffs...

they should be thrown out with new council elections held..

The ghoulish grizzled Greenies of Batman must have been a bit put out when faced with a choice between flotsam and jetsam as the trash of Australia floated by them.

Is this the long predicted end of the treasonous traitorous Greenies ?

Others may be in the same position. Can Tony Abbott produce his documentation to prove he renounced his citizenship by birth? His Form R?

apparently he now can - it only took him about 17 years ? (unless it is a Photoshop job or more likely the result of a deal made visiting the UK while he was PM). Apparently the high court was fairly patient.

He has produced a letter from the Home Office that he did renounce.  The original Form has been covered up by Abbott under FOI.......and I suspect that is because he did not sign it himself, and Mummy who was still changeing his nappies even when he was in his 20s, and probably even now.....forged his signature on the document.

I suppose that you have evidence of this?

It has been discussed here many times.  If you insist, I'll see if  can find the old Threads.

Plenty of links...this is but one.

Link.

What do you think the odds are that the document is genuine and why do you think it took about 17 years to find or manufacture ????
