Seems the WA Government is beginning to wake up to the monster it let it the door, and it is now trying to retake ground.  If any of these intentions come to fruition, there goes Uber in WA, and other States will follow.

Their drivers clearly are employees.

Link.

Quote:
THE State Government might declare war on Uber’s business model by bringing gig economy contractors under WA’s industrial relations system.

In a submission to the Senate inquiry looking into the future of work, Industrial Relations Minister Bill Johnston reveals former Industrial Relations Commission president Mark Ritter is reviewing the definition of employee in State IR legislation “with the objective of ensuring comprehensive coverage for all employees”.

Mr Ritter is also investigating whether gig economy workers could be brought under the State’s IR umbrella, the submission says.

Any such move would apply to ride-sharing giant Uber and online platforms, such as food-delivery app Deliveroo and local services marketplace Airtasker, and force them to pay insurance, worker’s compensation and potentially award wages.

Actually if they paid award wages and got insurance etc (in other words did the right thing) they might make some actual money out of it instead of all the money being made by paypal.

the only reason uber made it in the door at all is because the taxi services were so bad and expensive to get into. Anyone can drive uber apparently.

Paypal just makes a fee for service as does those POS machines inside Taxi. paypal might even be cheaper ..... have you ever had a merchant account with such a device ? Do you think they are free ?

Uber is getting a larger piece of the pie then paypal, as it is with the Taxi Industry.

I hear all these dumb attacks on Uber but most it is out of pure ignorance especially from Aussie who does not understand why Uber works.

Well I know people who use uber and also 1 uber driver. The uber driver works for uber because its too expensive to get into taxis (although apparently that is getitng a lil cheaper now). the people that use uber use it because it provides a better  and quicker service.

I think for most its the price but for me its the price and better service.

I chat with the Uber drivers all the time ..... what I notice is its very wide spread ... where I work you open the Uber app there will be about 6-12 hanging around and get to me quicker then a taxi who mostly expect me to walk to their regulated zone.

No idea why you brought up paypal and in Sydney they have imposed a levy to help the Taxi industry die properly ??? That would be bigger than Paypal's take on small trips. The only complaint I have read is Uber has raised its fees recently.

Everyone needs to get over it Uber is innovation like the Mobile Phone was versus the public phone. Aussie is still struggling to understand why Uber is cheaper, its like watching a mouse on the wheel he just keeps on spewing out the same crap !

Aussie's a small minded individual and his dislike of Uber is rooted in his yearning for the days when taxis had cartel protection to rip people off.

Move aside, old man and let the lateral thinkers run the show.

I'm an efficiency freak and having roads clogged full of single occupant vehicles does my head in.

The answer is for EVERY driver to be registered on some kind of ride sharing app and the chances are in a busy city like Sydney, when ever you're going somewhere, a registered user with a spare seat will be going your way.

If I needed to scoot into the city I'd have not the slightest problem getting a ride in a plumbers Hilux. How efficient is that!

I'm seriously considering registering as an Uber driver to use in the 'are you going my way' capacity.

I have a client in Chatswood who I visit 3 or 4 times a week and I'd bet nearly ever trip  someone would be looking for a ride for the entire leg or part there of.

My bridge toll gets paid, I make $30, have a chinwag to someone interesting, less cars on the road.

Paypal is definately making money from uber.  Obviously not as much as uber makes from uber but they get their cut

And from ebay and from many other online retailers like Kogan

Again do you think an EFTPOS machine in a taxi is provided free and charges nothing ?

Its a non issue !

You could discuss what cut Uber takes that is far bigger !

I do it most work days, I park down the road from work and do a bus hop to work.
Leaving work I just get an uber back costs about $13 all up as opposed to $30+ early bird parking + bashing you way in and out of the city.

Uber is just providing an alternative they are not stealing your first born or raping small children not sure why anyone would attack them at all. If anything they might in increasing the usage in this industry as they offer a better cheaper service.

If the taxi industry has zero capability to compete with alternatives that is their problem plus the recalcitrant government that over-regulated this industry !
