Turkey's president tells 6-year-old girl she’d get honours if martyred

Istanbul: Turkey's president has exhorted Turks to support their soldiers in Syria. But a televised scene showing a traumatised 6-year-old cadet girl, who wept as he proclaimed she would be honored if killed in combat, is not coming off well.

Clips of the encounter between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the first-grader, Amine Tiras, was drawing a backlash online Monday, with some critics calling his treatment of such a young child inappropriate.

"Her Turkish flag is in her pocket. If she becomes a martyr, God willing, she will be wrapped with it," he said after calling her onstage. "She is ready for everything, aren't you?"

She had started crying before the president made his statement.

Erdogan has dispatched Turkish forces to the border area of Syria to battle Kurds he considers Turkey's enemies and has been rallying his country for the fight, including in daily public speeches.

The girl, according to Turkish news agency reports, had been attending the provincial congress of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party in a military-style uniform Saturday.

She wore a maroon beret and a Turkish flag in her pocket, and had made a soldier's salute during Erdogan's televised speech, when he spotted her in the audience.

Its you who does not understand Turkey. It is a country where educated people tried to create a Western style open and progressive society, but were overtaken by the increasing numbers of uneducated mostly Mohammedans who are led by Erdogan, who wants to build the worlds largest mosque. His reference to martyring of children is consistent with other bastions of ignorance like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

There is the possibility that you already understand this, but just want to hush it up.

With full respect what you are saying the fact is that's not right to frighten a little girl who was already crying from fear.
It has nothing to do with good nationalism. If Erdogan is so devoted nationalist why he doesn't offer himself as a martyr?

The picture in the child and the speech is in the context of Turkey's fight with the YPG in Syria. Religion is in the background somewhere, but that's not the main thrust of what's behind the pic. İ've spent 3 and a half years in Turkey. İ know their mindset. They are very nationalist. Western conservatives are jealous because they can't muster the same kind of zealotry for their countries. Why do you think the West is white-anted from within? Because they can't get out of their armchairs to fight for it.
