For years I've made my own collars for the cats out of reflective thick paper bought from Bunnings hardware store, and attached the buckles to them. The last thing I do before putting them on is snip a short split crosswise so if there's any tension the collar will fall off.

The collar is still secured on the cat so I expect it is there to stay. Too early in the season to know if it is effective or not. If it is not, I will go back to the topical treatment. The cheaper generic versions of the topical are NOT effective. I made that mistake once and had to get the house sprayed for fleas twice that summer.
