Feb 23rd, 2018 at 8:34pm

I've nearly run out of space.

...

It needs liposuction.

What's the best way of doing this?

First thing to try is to delete all temp files.

c:\ temp
c:\windows\temp

empty the rubbish bin.

Archive stuff off the drive if you can and delete what you don't need.

remove programs that you do not use.

etc.

Most of those cleaner programs do it for you as well.

ccleaner is one that comes to mind. backup before you try these and be carefull.

Right click on c: in "my computer", properties, general, disk cleanup.

If that's not enough, move shyte off onto an external drive or cloud storage or buy a bigger hdd.

Edit: If you got a 2 or 3TB usb drive you could keep most of your porn on that and you could use it to back up that abysmally small 200G HDD.

No self respecting desktop would have a 200G drive, obviously a laptop.

Put all the files you don't really need on a USB hard drive -
old photos etc.
I got one from Office Works for only $77 to back up my HDD.

Then a defragging.

Grin

The Porn File is actually very modest, boasting only a very few favourites after routine culling in order to save only the best for Art Appreciation purposes. In fact it's only 8.96MB.

I have a 1T extended hard drive that I've abandoned for months now because I could never retrieve the files back onto my PC's local disc. Acronis, Macrium, EasUS ... not worth a cracker when it has come to moving the clone back into the PC after a scrubbing of the C:. The fruitless hours I've spent trying to translate instructions into comprehensible English has left me stripped-and-gutted so far as wanting to go through the whole process again.

I had a full copy of my system and personal files transferred to the ext hdd with the help of Seagate, and then a few months later I needed to activate the Restore process ... in your dreams, Bucko!

I've got a second external hard drive, but the Backup & Restore features on these various Backup systems come across as gibberish to me.

I'm even toying with the idea of phoning up a local mobile computer service guy to come and do the honours. That's probably my best bet.

Meanwhile, thanks for the suggestions, doods.

A common pattern I see with users is data hording people are too lazy to go through there data and work out what they need to keep or not. What you might want to invest in is both a Local NAS (look it up) and a Cloud solution and thing that is real important back up in both.

Windblows and associated applications often create a lot of temporary files that often they don't clean up. A simple way to reduce these is get a disc cleaning tool that does such, There are many around

Thanks RSF and you others.

First I need to work out what these are ...

...

'system reserved (F:)'  What's this?

'Local Disc (I:)'  What's this?

I have my external drive turned on but it doesn't show here. Seagate 931GB capacity.

I'm going to go with using the default Windows 10 Pro backup facility. I've done it before but it didn't work. Perhaps this time ...

Use "treesizefree" to figure out what is clogging it up. This is an invaluable bit of software.

System reserved is http://www.thewindowsclub.com/system-reserved-partition-windows

D: is to store data on and is empty, you can use it to copy stuff to, like your movies, pictures and porn or use partitioning software to double the size of C: by removing D: and expanding C:
You could also do something like move everything in "My Docs" to D: and mount d: on  "My Docs" folder in your user directory or something.

Delete your overloaded porn video files. Might save you a few gigabytes of space.

Feel free to take my posts with you. There's a good case to be made for having "my Docs" or your home dir c:/users/Herb on D: mounted on C:/users/Herb. You would only need to backup D: for example in that case. The point is you have a lot of free space but have no idea how to use it.

At your suggestion I've just done it.

Free space: 20.4GB (of 221GB) ~ 242,500 files.

And then there's a colourful list, but what I'm supposed to do with it, I don't know.

Right click on C drive then click on Format, that should clear up all your disk space.  Grin

Open up the C drive in treesizefree. It should then show you how much memory each folder takes up. If you open each folder it will show the same for the subfolders. It allows you to prioritise the worst offending folders.

Smiley No probs.

What I think I'll do is go to Office Works and buy a bunch of Flash Drives and move a lot of my stuff into them.

I have a hard drive dock so i back up files to another hard drive which had very little use. Plugs in with USB 3.

Made it easier to transfer music files etc to other computers.

You could probably pick up hard drive and dock for around $120 which would hold 10X what flash drives hold for same money.

I have a hard drive dock so i back up files to another hard drive which had very little use. Plugs in with USB 3.

Made it easier to transfer music files etc to other computers.

You could probably pick up hard drive and dock for around $120 which would hold 10X what flash drives hold for same money.

Thanks Baron, but I've had not one, but two external hard drives for years now, with almost no success at retrieving/restoring the cloning and 'imaging' sent to it.

Macrium
EasUS
Acronis
Window 10's own backup application ...

All to no avail to the effect that I don't give a sh*t anymore.

I'll try the Flash drives / Memory Sticks option as a last throw-of-the-dice on this matter.

Have you installed treesizefree or something similar?

At your suggestion I've just done it.

Free space: 20.4GB (of 221GB) ~ 242,500 files.

And then there's a colourful list, but what I'm supposed to do with it, I don't know.

Something like Treesize Free with give you a visual representation of where all the files are.  You can easily see what is hogging all the space.

You can use this as a guide to move files that aren't needed by windows to the D: to free up the space on C:.

One thing it might identify is Dropbox or Google Drive storing their files on C:.  You'll need to use the programs themselves to move files like that (otherwise it might sync the changes, or "deletions" to the cloud if you just move the files etc).

You might find a download folder for BitTorrent etc, you know, for all those Linux Distros etc...

Also might be a heap of Windows Updates and temp files which you should really be deleting file by file, but if you at least google the path, you should be able to get some more information about how to safely remove the files.

Good luck.

If anything I use Beyond Compare for managing backups. It shows you in a convenient way what has been changed since your last backup. If you are careful with it you can achieve incremental backups by making two complete backups on an external drive and then deleting any common files. But it is generally not worth the hassle, given how cheap external memory is.

I have never backed up up the windows system. Some laptops have an internal factory reset function, which I have had to use before.

Don't put anything personal on dropbox etc. Risk of hacking.

Light mate, this is the Tech corner, reality and logic is what is needed here.  There is no need to bring your judgemental stupidity and total detachment from reality here.

I'm surprised you didn't just claim he had 90% free disk space as his solution as if you can simply will it to be true like all the other bullshit you spout, or claim that he is running out of disk space being fake news spread by Clinton colluding with Russia.

Perhaps there is some NASA or Deep State conspiracy to report false hard drive usage to force people to upgrade and buy more?

You're not welcome here mate...  Take your crazy back to the fringe.

Yes, the bitter sting of defeat because you ignore the facts presented to you that you don't like, therefore you win?

Yeah, that's how it works.  I'm stinging...

...

The problem with you is no matter the topic, you find a way to ruin it for everyone.  Someone is asking for help to resolve a hard drive space issue, you start judging people as if your fringe lunatic brand of morality is desired by anyone other than the most detached and lonely people out there looking to feel special be seeking hidden truth?

If you're not willing to help, don't contribute maybe?

You can have the Fringe, you can ignore questions, replies and facts you don't like, but don't get in the way of helping people.
