car problem
Feb 18th, 2018 at 7:46pm

My gears are very stiff and I have to force them into gear which I dont like doing- when I put the handbrake on over night this loosens them up and prior to that a couple of pumps on the clutch helped them into gear as well -but does anyone know what is going on here- is my gearbox ruined- going into garage next week

Have you checked the clutch master/slave cylinders?

So many things it could be. How old is the clutch?

Clutch.  If it's hydraulic, check your fluid, if it's down one of the cylinders(master/slave) needs replacing/kitting. Whether it's mechanical or hydraulic it can be adjusted to give you a bit more time. Worst case the clutch is just worn out, depending on the car it can be expensive. Is it front, all, or rear wheel drive? How many Ks?

edit: The hand brake thing you mention has nothing to do with it, it's likely that it just gets worse when hot.

What make model is the car?

Check the travel of the clutch pedal. At what stage in the travel does the pedal meet resistance? If it's half way down, the clutch needs adjusting

Check to see it's hydraulic or cable. If it's hydraulic, bleed the system to remove air from the fluid. If the gears are still hard, adjust the clutch

If it's cable, there'll be a bracket that one end of the cable goes through, there'll two nuts, one either side of the bracket, loosen one and tighten the other

If nothing works, replace the clutch

coming up 9 years- a KIA rio- looks like it might be a clutch problem then- time to get rid of it i think

Hi Agnes,
get a quote from the garage first.
It might be something simple & cheap to fix.
It could be just a leaky master cylinder on the clutch.

Often mechanical things are not what causes cars to be sold -
it's the way they look when they get older.
As long as you don't ride a clutch -
use the handbrake for starts on hills then a clutch could last 250,000 kms.

Having samish issue - car is shaking in low gear, difficulty with shifting into low gear.
Clutch issue with flywheel or some such.
European manual car. 160 k on odo. Dealer quoted $2500 for part only. Clutch specialist is fixing it for $2200 for parts and labour.  Apparently a typical/expected issue at these ks for manual cars.

Or replace the clutch. Has it been a good car? Are you happy with it? Are you willing to spend around $800->$1000 to keep it going? Get it checked out but if it's never given you a problem it may be worth keeping.

Ok beat this. My last car was a dual clutch auto, 1 year out of warrenty it came up with a message 'check transmission '.

The dealer hooked it up to the computer and said I needed a new transmission. List price,  $36000
