It's not ideal to grow vegies like that even though you have had success in the past with it.  Eventually it will fail.  You were lucky before lol

Dig a small garden (preferably raised) especially for the vegies and keep the grass well out of it and you won't go wrong.

Yes - I'll do that next time.

Where it worked before the soil was sandy.
This time the soil is hard clay -
and I dug a hole & put in potting mixture.

You will get the best success with potting mixture in pots.

If you have a hard clay soil you need to build it up with organic matter to break the clay down.

The lawn does fine in clay soil.
It grows so fast when it rains.
You were right from the beginning.
The lawn is not a good place for a tomato plant.

I didn't have time to make a proper garden.
I'm going to pull that plant out -
see what happened to the roots -
put extra soil on top & grow it back into lawn.
In a few months there will be no sign of a plant ever being there.

With couch grass you really need a root barrier between the
grass & the garden so that the grass can't get into the garden.

Yes and you need to cut the root system down deep continually if you don't have a physical barrier.  Couch will get in to anything and thrive.

Just dig a small garden for a couple of plants as you can always extend it.

Build up the clay with lots of organic matter.  Bags of cow poo from Bunnings etc.  Let it all settle then plant out.

I haven't grown anything but herbs for quite awhile but how can you go wrong with tomatoes?    Grin

I have had tomatoes that have not ripened at all.
Looked all good, stayed green.

Lots of people seemed to have the same problem this season.  It can happen in very hot weather.

It could also have something to do with the fungicides they treat the seeds with.

over the past couple of seasons I've heard many a same story..

Failed Vegi Crops and in particular... Tomato Crops of which many many people love to do each season...

I've grown mine in Hay Bails this year and they've been growing excellently... but I just haven't been home to look after them..

I'll be home this weekend for the first time in 3 weeks...  Undecided
