Dig a small garden (preferably raised) especially for the vegies and keep the grass well out of it and you won't go wrong.

Where it worked before the soil was sandy.
This time the soil is hard clay -
and I dug a hole & put in potting mixture.
You will get the best success with potting mixture in pots.
If you have a hard clay soil you need to build it up with organic matter to break the clay down.
The lawn does fine in clay soil.
It grows so fast when it rains.
You were right from the beginning.
The lawn is not a good place for a tomato plant.
I didn't have time to make a proper garden.
I'm going to pull that plant out -
see what happened to the roots -
put extra soil on top & grow it back into lawn.
In a few months there will be no sign of a plant ever being there.
With couch grass you really need a root barrier between the
grass & the garden so that the grass can't get into the garden.
