So, I bought an E-bike...
Feb 9th, 2018 at 9:30pm

... as a 60th-birthday-present to myself.

I had been thinking about either buying or building one for some time, but
unfortunately most e-bikes LOOK like electric bikes (ie ugly), and also they
tend to be quite expensive ($2000 and up). Even a decent DIY kit costs up-
wards of $500, and you then need to source a suitable bike as a base. And
they still LOOK like an e-bike.

But I found this one on eBay for just under $1000, brand-new, and it looks
more like a 'normal' mountain-bike than an e-bike.

Motor is a 250W geared hub-motor in the rear wheel. It has a 25km/h top
speed (the maximum allowed), and it can go for up to 40km on a single
charge. Costs around 20c per charge, so it's super cheap to run. Battery
is a lithium 36v 9a/h.

It meets Australian regulations, and is 100% legal to ride on the road.

I actually find it to be far safer than a normal bike in traffic, as it's easier to
keep up with the flow, and it also has better brakes and lights.

If any of you are thinking about getting one - or know someone who is - I
can thoroughly recommend them. They're practical AND fun. Smiley

Good to see you back Kat. Bikes aren't my thing, I like walking but for short distance travel where walking may be impractical it looks like a good idea. I think my eldest son would like something like that. Do you have a link?

Hi Kat,

"Nice Bike."       ....as T-1000 said to the motorcycle cop.       Grin

Looks not too dissimilar to my own MB.    [only mine is a light blue]

I like riding bikes, i have a Giant MB, for riding locally, on forest trails.

But have been intrigued by recent advancements in E-bikes.

you said....
"I found this one on eBay for just under $1000, brand-new, and it looks

."

It does.

40 km range is OK.

Have fun.

Wouldn't last two minutes in the bush where I am but I admire it anyway. My brother used to convert push bikes to electric

Are there any Govt fees or greenslip required?

No - because pedalling remains the primary power-source, and because the motor
is only 250W (and speed-limited) it's still classed as a bicycle. The motor will ONLY
supply power if you ARE pedalling - you can't ride it like a motorcycle.

You are correct, it's not meant for serious MTB-ing. But for riding 'easy' trails it's
great. Mine is used primarily around town and on the odd dirt road, very little
'real' off-road stuff.

No use to me at 25kph it would take 1-2 hrs to get to work.
I guess you could carry a spare battery but based on what you told me the battery would be pretty dead by the time I got to work.
Prefer one you can register as a motor bike i.e go faster.

They are limited to 25 kph on e power, you can still pedal if you wish to go faster. True most e bike riders dont since after overtaking me on a hill I usually catch them up everywhere else.

OK still 1-2 hrs to get to work..... takes me 30 minutes or less in a car. Why not just buy a small petrol bike or a registered electric one that can go over 60KPH ? You can pick up a postie bike for around $1000 they can get over 80KPH with a tail wind. The government had to step in as the petrol mods these bikes were flying, even a high end electric bike can crack 100KPH.

Well not my fault you seem determined at every stage to not be interested in these.

An e-bike would suit someone like my dad, he can ride it on the flats and tear it up on the hills.

Disks are only cable, but they do work well.

A crankset/derailleur upgrade is planned, although the derailleurs do get a far
easier life than those on my non-electric vintage road-bikes.

So far (I've ridden it around 120km so far) the bike has performed faultlessly.

And I'm getting around 30km+ out of a charge.

Hydraulics are generally better. I would suggest wiggle for the parts

Smiley

Trying to avoid being a fat bugger?

Then ride a normal still takes 1-2 hrs to get to work Smiley
Now you just throwing out misguided insults.

Well not my fault you seem determined at every stage to not be interested in these.

An e-bike would suit someone like my dad, he can ride it on the flats and tear it up on the hills.

Yes its a toy if you have a short trip to work it would be great. But then you could just walk to work Smiley

I would be interested in one that can cruise at 60-80 and last 1-2 hrs, but at those speeds they call them Motor Bikes Smiley and require registration.

No, seriously, i'm loving it.

I'm riding for FUN again - not because I HAVE to, or for transport.

I do still ride my vintage Apollo road-bikes though (but only for fun).

So, Kat, you've taken the leap.

My e-Bike is a Leitner Berlin Cruiser - straight bar - 26inch wheels - 16Ah Lithium Ion battery. Tyre pressure 65psi. Bought in Sept of 2015 to replace my other e-bike that finally conked out.

36 volt 200 watts motor, but I rewired it to pump out 250 watts.

The NSW unregistered watts limit is 200 Watts - if more watts, then must be registered and fitted out like a motor-cycle.

The on-road legal speed limit is only a pathetic 6kph, but the rewiring now allows me to go at around 25kph on the flat without peddling.

One of the first things I did was to go to a bicycle shop and get a decent pair of thick inner-tubes that are thorn and nail-resistant.

You'll need mud-guards.

Adjusting the disc-brakes is a slightly tricky business. If it's not 'just right' you'll get 'drag' because the brake pad is touching the disc, but if it's too far off the disc you'll get almost no braking at all.

Cost me $1400 from Victoria, delivered overnight. I chose the 16Ah battery instead of the standard 10Ah one. I've rode flatout for 2 hours up hill and down dale without the battery going flat.

I fixed a box to the pillion so I can shop at Bunnings and elsewhere.

And yes, it gets you 'there', but it's also fun to ride. I almost always stick to riding along the pavements.

Well, you've got me there ... BUT! I've gone from 91kg to 82kg in just the past few weeks because I've turned myself into a Fruit Bat and nuts-nibbler and have given away drinking any more fizzy drinks.

I've calculated that I'll be able to see my penis again in the showers sometime in the middle of June or July this year.

The e-bike has hit the 1000km mark (1100km, actually). Nothing's broken in that time (apart from one plastic clip), and nothing has worn or failed. The only thing that's needed touching is that the brakes needed adjustment at 200km (they squeaked) and at 950km to take up normal pad-wear. Front tyre is hardly worn, rear tyre is about 40% worn. I'm still perfectly happy with it.

kat,

with no mudguards wouldn't it be a messy experience in the wet with a wet stripe up your front and back ?

What sort of lithium battery has it got ?  Lithium Ion ?   Lithium Titanate ?

Kat,

For myself, and others here, thank you for writing/posting this 'journal', of your impressions and experience with your E-bike.

I'm a potential E-bike buyer [and have little knowledge of them] so your musings are of interest to me.

I had been thinking about getting these to modify my bike.

https://www.add-e.at/?lang=en

It looks alot more light weight that the traditional pedelec motors, and less complicated to install - but then I just get my brother to do the hard work.  Bit worried about the tyre wear with this concept.

Still a full kit is about 1200 to 1300....

Tyre wear on the front is no worse than a normal bike.  Mine's about half-worn.

My rear MIGHT make it to 2000km, but it's doubtful.

There's no friction drive onto the tyre (which does wear the tyre out very
quickly) with the hub-mounted motor. It's a geared drive from the motor
to the hub.

My bike weight is 20.6 kg as supplied.

The manager at the place where I work recently bought a bike similar to yours, Kat. Should have cost about $750 but he got it for $250.

He was tired of getting parking fines with all the new timed parking restrictions in the streets near our workplace so he puts the bike on the back of his ute, parks about a kilometer away where there are no parking restrictions and rides the bike the rest of the way to work.

Nice bike.
I'd love to have a purpose for one, but I pedal pretty much for exercise only.

I wonder if you could hook up a solar panel to charge while you ride.
I've heard also that some E-bikes can charge by pedalling.
