So, I bought an E-bike...
Feb 9th, 2018 at 9:30pm

... as a 60th-birthday-present to myself.

I had been thinking about either buying or building one for some time, but
unfortunately most e-bikes LOOK like electric bikes (ie ugly), and also they
tend to be quite expensive ($2000 and up). Even a decent DIY kit costs up-
wards of $500, and you then need to source a suitable bike as a base. And
they still LOOK like an e-bike.

But I found this one on eBay for just under $1000, brand-new, and it looks
more like a 'normal' mountain-bike than an e-bike.

Motor is a 250W geared hub-motor in the rear wheel. It has a 25km/h top
speed (the maximum allowed), and it can go for up to 40km on a single
charge. Costs around 20c per charge, so it's super cheap to run. Battery
is a lithium 36v 9a/h.

It meets Australian regulations, and is 100% legal to ride on the road.

I actually find it to be far safer than a normal bike in traffic, as it's easier to
keep up with the flow, and it also has better brakes and lights.

If any of you are thinking about getting one - or know someone who is - I
can thoroughly recommend them. They're practical AND fun. Smiley

Good to see you back Kat. Bikes aren't my thing, I like walking but for short distance travel where walking may be impractical it looks like a good idea. I think my eldest son would like something like that. Do you have a link?

Hi Kat,

"Nice Bike."       ....as T-1000 said to the motorcycle cop.       Grin

Looks not too dissimilar to my own MB.    [only mine is a light blue]

I like riding bikes, i have a Giant MB, for riding locally, on forest trails.

But have been intrigued by recent advancements in E-bikes.

you said....
"I found this one on eBay for just under $1000, brand-new, and it looks

."

It does.

40 km range is OK.

Have fun.

Wouldn't last two minutes in the bush where I am but I admire it anyway. My brother used to convert push bikes to electric

Are there any Govt fees or greenslip required?

No - because pedalling remains the primary power-source, and because the motor
is only 250W (and speed-limited) it's still classed as a bicycle. The motor will ONLY
supply power if you ARE pedalling - you can't ride it like a motorcycle.

You are correct, it's not meant for serious MTB-ing. But for riding 'easy' trails it's
great. Mine is used primarily around town and on the odd dirt road, very little
'real' off-road stuff.

No use to me at 25kph it would take 1-2 hrs to get to work.
I guess you could carry a spare battery but based on what you told me the battery would be pretty dead by the time I got to work.
Prefer one you can register as a motor bike i.e go faster.

They are limited to 25 kph on e power, you can still pedal if you wish to go faster. True most e bike riders dont since after overtaking me on a hill I usually catch them up everywhere else.

OK still 1-2 hrs to get to work..... takes me 30 minutes or less in a car. Why not just buy a small petrol bike or a registered electric one that can go over 60KPH ? You can pick up a postie bike for around $1000 they can get over 80KPH with a tail wind. The government had to step in as the petrol mods these bikes were flying, even a high end electric bike can crack 100KPH.
