Senator calls for funding to ASADA to stop
Feb 9th, 2018 at 10:11am

Why should taxpayers fund drug testing for sports?

Quote:
Senator calls for doping agency's demise

Australia's sports doping agency should be abolished and drug testing left up to individual sporting bodies, says a crossbench senator.

Liberal Democrats senator David Leyonhjelm says the Australian Sports Anti-doping Authority (ASADA) is a waste of taxpayers money as it tests athletes for legal substances.
Sporting bodies like the AFL and NRL are taking a "freebie" from taxpayers despite being capable of conducting their own tests for non-illicit drugs like caffeine and peptides, Senator Leyonhjelm said.

"If an employer comes running to the government and says, 'Can you please test my staff to see if they take legal drugs?', a government that is looking after taxpayers should tell that employer to get lost," Senator Leyonhjelm told the Senate on Monday.

The federal government funds ASADA to the tune of almost $12 million.

Senator Leyonhjelm was debating a bill which will abolish a slew of government bodies, including ASADA's advisory group, which has bipartisan support.
He said there was no public health case for stopping a tiny percentage of people from taking caffeine and peptides while letting them punch each other in boxing or torture themselves in triathlons.

SO his opinion is that because ASADA tests for legal drugs (which is a misrepresentation of the state of affairs anyway) that we should do away with it.

Can you give us 3 good reasons why taxpayers should fund drug testing for AFL/NRL or any other sport?

1. INtegrity of those sports. History has shown the integrity of those sports can not be trusted to the sports, we need a separate organisation
2. Its more than just legal drugs, and there is even grey areas in perfectly legal drugs (as  Chris Froome is currently proving.
3. We're whinging about 12 million a year?

That's not 3 good reasons.

What is stopping the AFL or NRL from paying for their own drug testing why should taxpayers fund this when those sports can afford it?

In case you didn't notice we are in debt because the government is spending more than they get with taxes, it's time for the government to stop wasting taxpayers money.

Additionally, the actual cost of testing is not that much. PLus would you expect amateur sports to contribute?

But I'm not surprised this came from Leyonhjlem.

He has a habit of focusing on small policy that no one really cares about.
