Aldi Opens New Stores In Nearly Every State
Feb 4th, 2018 at 7:02am

ALDI Australia’s expansion will continue across the nation this year, as it opens new stores in nearly every state. But there are a few catches.

February 2, 2018

ALDI Australia’s expansion will continue across the nation this year, as it opens new stores in nearly every state.   Smiley

The German retail giant, which opened its 500th store in Australia in November last year, is set to open a further 32 new stores with seven in NSW. Two of them will be based in Wetherill Park and Warners Bay and will open in the first half of the year.   Smiley

In Queensland, eight stores are coming early this year with two confirmed for The Gap and Dalby, though there is local speculation that Aldi plans to open stores in North Queensland.

Victoria will get an extra four stores with one already confirmed for Gladstone Park.

South Australia will get a further four stores with one confirmed for Kilkenny.

Western Australia will also see nine more stores opened, with three in the first half of the year confirmed for Wanneroo, Beeliar and Byford.

But Tasmanians will miss out, with Aldi having no plans to open a store off the mainland yet.

When asked whether any of these new stores would carry liquor, an Aldi Australia spokesman told News Corp Australia they would not confirm which new locations would be selling alcohol.

And it’s not just the number of stores that are expanding, the size of them is also growing.

Under Aldi’s national refurbishment program, 100 stores will get a complete makeover this year alone.

An Aldi Australia spokesman said that this was necessary to accommodate customer needs for new, growing categories such as health foods, organic produce and meat.

The shopping giant’s new store format will be rolled out to all of its existing stores by 2020.

And if you were hoping for some of the other online and self-serving benefits that shoppers see at Woolworths and Coles, think again.

Aldi has no plans to set up an online shopping website, click and collect, After Pay or home delivery service in Australia.

Aldi Australia customers will get new stores, but no online options.

An Aldi spokesman told News Corp Australia that they are focused on delivering the “best possible in-store experience”.

“We constantly review our business operations and processes to ensure we continue to deliver exceptional value to our customers,” he said.

“This includes eliminating many of the costly extras associated with traditional supermarkets.”

While Aldi concentrates on its in-store experience, its staff are also not about to start adopting Coles and Woolworths’ practice of helping customers with packing their shopping bags either.

Aldi maintains that this keeps wait times low at the checkout, and it’s how the supermarket can also keep its prices low.

Aldi is standing by its in-store experience.

“We ask that customers put their purchases back in their trolley or basket once they have been scanned, and then pack at their own pace at the long bench behind the tills,” a spokesman said.

For those who prefer to skip queues and use a self-service checkout, Aldi will not be installing these in its newly refurbished stores.   Smiley

“Feedback has told us that our shopper prefer face-to-face interactions at registers and checkout wait times are an important part of their in-store experience,” the spokesman told News Corp.

“As such, our stores do not have self-service checkout and there are currently no plans to implement them.”   Smiley

Aldi’s focus on its in-store experience comes as more international shopping chains are continuing to enter Australia.

Aldi is overrated
Their prices are pretty much the same as the no-name brand items in Woolies and Coles, but you don't have the option of getting a name brand.

The checkouts are horrendous. When I rarely visit Aldi I always get stuck behind someone doing their monthly grocery shop.

I much prefer automatic checkouts

Only socialist would be over-joyed with the knowledge that every single cent of aldi profit goes overseas to foreign hands.

Unlike coles,  woolies and the minor players who have local ownership as private operators or publicly listed companies owned by all Australians.

Sell your soul to foreign owners, just like a good little peon.

They do stock some name brands, although the prices they charge for them is either the same as, or more than, what Woolworths charges.

And they keep opening and closing checkouts all the time.  It doesn't make any sense.

I used to shop at Aldi from time to time but now that their prices are so close to those of their competition, I don't see the point.

The only Aldi I have come across that is a pleasant place to shop at is the one at Marsden Park, which is a bit too far away for me to go to just to do a bit of grocery shopping.

I hate auto checkouts, prefer Aldi as they do name brands often not the name brands you seem to like at Coles and Woolies.

I also prefer the simplistic uncluttered layout of the stores as opposed to Coles who seem to let a 5 year old design the layout (woolies is not too bad).

Its all about choice and for a big German giant they really have offered that and made Coles and Woolies improve.

We tried doing the main shop at Coles once as we got given a $50 voucher, we worked out we spent an extra $70 compared to our normal Aldi shop.

For me personally Aldi store is more convenient ..... both Coles and Woolies are at the same shopping centre but deeper inside it. I can park very close to Aldi. For us by every measure ALDi is better, we actually find the chocolate is better quality and the meat is better quality than coles and woolies.

But as I said its all about choice and Aldi offers an alternative.

Not sure where your getting your price data we tried coles for our big shop about 2 years ago and it was a big F on every measure.

Like for Like Aldi is far cheaper but if you worship particular brands then Aldi is probably not for you.

thats crap.

you go to a normal supermarket looking for the same price as what you find in aldis and guess what ? You walk out totally disappointed. It's either slop in a can or full priced name brand stuff Sad

dont ask me to scan my own shopping or to pack it thanks.. as far as I am concerned  ALDi should pack for their customers...after all where would they be without them?

they do in fact do bugger all..

putting pallets of stock on the floor doesnt do it for me either.... and sometimes they only have one checkout working.....

you pay a bit less but you do all the  so called service work... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes while the checkout chick sits down..

You didn't say anything.

Aldi comes up cheaper in various consumers test go look for them.
Beyond that I prefer the less cluttered set up of Aldi our local woolies is way too big and cluttered and as I said Coles is a completely disorganised.

Its all about choice but if your a mindless brand bunny Aldi may not be for you !
fyi:
https://www.choice.com.au/shopping/everyday-shopping/supermarkets/articles/cheapest-groceries-australia#cheapest.

By switching from big brands to Aldi the savings are big,
According to choice by supermarket brands Aldi is still cheaper.

On the supermarket brands V Aldi while Aldi is cheaper its small enough to judge your choice more on personal taste, but with big brands the test difference was 50-60 per week ! Harder to ignore !

Name brands pay for shelf space in coles and woolies...that's why they are expensive. Corporate greed. We never win.
