Sydney rail workers in deadlock with state government over new pay deal

Sydney Morning Herald
February 1 2018

A resolution to the standoff between Sydney rail workers and the Berejiklian government over a new pay deal remains as elusive as ever after the state refused to budge on its earlier offer.

Despite encouraging signs earlier in the week, Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins was "lambasted" when he fronted more than 200 delegates from seven unions for presenting a package that was described as unchanged on a week ago.   Sad

Rail Tram and Bus Union state secretary Alex Claassens said the delegates were "very very annoyed" that a better offer had not been placed on the table containing "some real words about our future conditions".

"It hasn't altered at all, so it's almost as if no one has listened to what we were saying," he said. "We are disappointed the [Transport] Minister is still not listening."   Sad

Mr Claassens said the delegates "loudly and clearly" told the chief executive of the state-run rail operator that the offer was "nowhere near enough" and to return with a better one.

Last week the industrial umpire ordered thousands of rail workers to abandon a planned 24-hour strike and an indefinite ban on overtime.

The Fair Work Commission ruled that both forms of industrial action "threaten to endanger the welfare of part of the population". The suspension of the strike and overtime ban will last until March 8.

Mr Claassens conceded that the decision meant that rail workers' "right to strike was gone", weakening their hand in the negotiations.

"Effectively our right to strike has been taken away from us. The rules are broken, quite clearly. And it's very frustrating because people do understand that we need to have the right to be able to stand up and be heard," he said.

The government's offer to award employees at Sydney Trains and NSW Trains includes a 2.75 per cent annual pay rise, a one-off $1000 payment and the extension of free travel using Opal cards to private and on-demand buses and the new metro train lines when they are opened in the coming years.

The total value of the package to staff equates to a 3.45 per cent a year increase, which the government argues is not above its cap on public sector wages of 2.5 per cent per annum because it includes productivity improvements.

Sydney Trains declined to comment.

Rail Workers In Deadlock Over New Pay Deal

What if we pay them very well and people stay at home because they can't afford to travel by rail? Will you still be bleating?

The ALP, the progressive party, the party of ideas, the workers' friend, is the only Australian political party to roast four young Australians in roof cavities. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
