2017 is second hottest year

That was obvious from the graph of global mean temperatures. The offical announcement:

NASA News & Feature Releases
Long-Term Warming Trend Continued in 2017: NASA, NOAA
Posted Jan. 18, 2018

Earth's global surface temperatures in 2017 ranked as the second warmest since 1880, according to an analysis by NASA.

Continuing the planet's long-term warming trend, globally averaged temperatures in 2017 were 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.90 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, according to scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. That is second only to global temperatures in 2016.

In a separate, independent analysis, scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) concluded that 2017 was the third-warmest year in their record. The minor difference in rankings is due to the different methods used by the two agencies to analyze global temperatures, although over the long-term the agencies' records remain in strong agreement. Both analyses show that the five warmest years on record all have taken place since 2010.

The recovery from the 2016 El Nino was half the recovery from the 1998 El Nino.

since 1880.... right..

did they keep world record back then?..

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/01/record-breaking-big-freeze-grips...

The weather service said a temperature of minus 26C (minus 15F) was recorded in Omaha before midnight on Sunday, breaking a record low dating back to 1884, and the temperature was still dropping early on New Year’s Day. That reading did not include the wind chill effect. Last week, Omaha officials cited the forecast in postponing the 18th annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks Spectacular that usually draws about 30,000 people.

It was even colder in Des Moines early on Monday at minus 29C (minus 20F) and wind chill dipping to -35C (-31F). Des Moines city officials had closed a downtown outdoor ice skating plaza and said it would not reopen until the city emerged from sub-zero temperatures.

Throngs of revellers braved the second-coldest New Year’s Eve on record in New York to usher in 2018 as the glittering crystal ball dropped in Times Square.

just sayin like.

Seems really mild this year, but maybe that's because I got my full ducted air-con installed. Has it been a bit warm?

We will need air conditioned space suits with a trolley to carry the air conditioner on to get around and play tennis.

Yes, I should have realised that.

BoM “Climate 2016” did point out that La Nina years are now hotter than El Nino years used to be not all that long ago.

Oh dear. Gone from your beloved NOAA, which rated 2017 third, to NASA, which according to some, regarding the Roberts interview, doesn't do climate.

I guess you change your mind to suit the "data" set that best suits you. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

JM, So having changed your data set to one that agrees with your view, all you have to do now is show the figure that is above 1997 62.45ºF.

"Taking this into account, NASA estimates that 2017’s global mean change is accurate to within 0.1 degree Fahrenheit, with a 95 percent certainty level."

https://climate.nasa.gov/news/2671/long-term-warming-trend-continued-in-2017-nas...

Grin Grin Grin Grin

That's +/- 0.05ºF

NOAA says that their global estimates for land are +/-0.27ºF.

Their uncertainties for the NH are +/-0.31ºF for the land. For the SH their uncertainties are +/-0.22ºF.

Yet when combined the global uncertainties for the land are +/-0.27ºF. You reckon you are the stats master; how can the uncertainty be narrower than the widest uncertainty?

Their global temp is estimated at 58.51ºF.

Hot in Adelaide:

Quote:
SA swelters on third day of extreme heat

Adelaide continues to swelter through a 40-degree plus day with some regional centres tipped to reach even higher temperatures as the state braces for the third day of extreme heat.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a high of 41 degrees for Adelaide on Friday after the mercury hit almost 42 degrees on Thursday and 39 degrees on Wednesday.

The conditions prompted the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to issue a lack of reserve notice for Friday afternoon, but SA Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis says it’s unlikely the state’s backup generators will be needed.

“There are many stages of lack of reserve notices,” he told reporters on Friday morning.

As AGW keeps warming the planet its effects become widespread, one such effect being winters getting shorter.

These shorter winters and decreased snow mean the popular sport/hobby in Vermont of snowmobiling is in danger—not enough snow!
