If I was to explain, you wouldn't understand. Ask your IT guru's that always provide you with incorrect analysis.

You are probably right, but Setanta might get some benefit from your explanation, as might others.

Another dig when you don't get what you want. You're a tool Aussie. Here's what you can do besides go fek yourself, don't ask me to do the impossible like find people through VPN, proxies or TOR or expect me to ban every VPN, proxy and TOR exit on the internet. Go ask all the EXPERTS you have.

Not intended as a dig whatsoever, Setanta.  No-one asked you to find anyone.

My suggestion to you (via PM and had nothing to do with this Thread) was to have Admin/GMOds approve new Member registrants, and that anyone using a proxy, or VPN or TOR not be approved.    You seemed to be telling me just about everything other than give a simple yes/no answer to my question whether you could see via the IP that an applicant for Membership was using a proxy, VPN or TOR.

Aussie, you don't know what a proxy is for starters. Everyone, unless you own an IP address and use it directly to the web is entering via a proxy server.

You would have to ban every VPN host in the world, how would you know if it's a VPN, you can only guess if it is registered by a commercial VPN company and you know their name. There are many that are not.

You would need to ban yourself because your internet service provider uses proxy servers.

You think this request would allow the real IP of a user to be seen. Until IP6 is implemented everywhere, this can never happen and the use of proxy servers will remain forever even if it was.

So thinking this would improve tracking if someone pissed you off is wrong, nonsense and shows your true intent. Stalker thou are.

Once did an IT security course with police officers who do this, they had some good stories.

Interesting fact is that the onion router or TOR is largely funded by the US government and they do not allow anything that they can't access.

I happen to think it's a great question.

And I'm glad our clueless ex cabbie asked it.

Because all Computers/Laptops/phones, etc are 'adjusted' before being available for sale in Australia, regardless if they are made here or in from overseas.
That way - our 'National Security'  Wink
have 'easier' access to find these Paedos and other 'not very nice people', like Bikers (Terrorists), etc.

Here's looking at you ASIO  Wink
...and here's looking at 'me'  Smiley

In the United States, they set up chatrooms and then have adults pretend to be children/teens in an attempt to entrap paedophiles into making contact with them. Then they set up a bait house and get an adult who looks young to act like the teenagers that the mark has been promised. Then they await the time and day that the meet up is supposed to take place. "To catch a predator" I think they call the show. Then some host comes along to interview the 'predator' and ask him stupid questions like "What are you doing here?".

The show always looks awkward and you start to feel for the person getting entrapped. That is why most of the charges laid against the 'perp' normally get thrown out in court. The judges do not want to waste their time with obvious cases of entrapment.

In Australia, I think they just scour the internet with programs to pick up lingo like "fondle my balls" and other things. Of course the way the paedos get around this is to write in internet speak with plenty of spelling mistakes. But if the investigators write some good software, they could probably expand to find more indirect points of dialogue that could lead them to finding potential crimes in progress.

It gets you thinking about the legalities in how someone could be prosecuted. If someone steals someone's property and then plants it on you without your knowledge, does that make you a criminal? For example, receiving stolen property?

On computers, other people might be looking up pornography on the family computer. If they download something illegal, or something is uploaded to someone's computer to set someone up, does that make the person who owns the computer responsible. If a person  deletes the content, the history and content can still be traced to the computer, unless the person goes to great lengths to delete the registries and change hardware on the computer. Correct? Anyway, the point being, you could end up getting charged for having illegal content on your home computer, especially if an investigator gets the heads up by someone that you have that on your computer.

Before the Internet, the Police would bust many a Paedo, even lots in one spot. I think the Internet isnt' as effective as the old method of actually catching them in the act or about to commit the act. Actually 'being there' was more effective than 'words on the Internet'.
I've been told by a few people in the know of lots of 'famous' Paedo busts.
One bust nabbed 20 of them at a Public Toilet all waiting for their 'kiddies' to be delivered - which were also 'busted' on their way to being delivered. Yep - all 'stolen' kiddies (x5).

I wonder if Police have forgotten about the 'old methods' and just become focused on the Internet as the 'only' avenue of access to commit such a terrible crime?
