Scientists predict 'mini ice age' could hit UK by 2030

A mini ice age that would freeze major rivers could hit Britain in less than two decades, according to research from universities in the UK and Russia.

A mathematical model of the Sun's magnetic activity suggests temperatures could start dropping here from 2021, with the potential for winter skating on the River Thames by 2030.

A team led by maths professor Valentina Zharkova at Northumbria University built on work from Moscow to predict the movements of two magnetic waves produced by the Sun.

It predicts rapidly decreasing magnetic waves for three solar cycles beginning in 2021 and lasting 33 years.

A mathematical model of the Sun's magnetic activity suggests temperatures in Britain could start dropping from 2021, with the potential for winter skating on the Thames by 2030.

Experts measured the Sun's magnetic waves
Very low magnetic activity on the Sun correspond with historically documented cold periods on Earth.

Professor Zharkova claims 97% accuracy for the model which dovetails with previous mini ice ages, including the Maunder Minimum period from 1645 to 1715 when frost fairs were held on the frozen Thames.

I think the mini ice age has already hit hard.

We won't have to wait till 2030.

Quote:
NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - A severe winter storm froze pipes and disrupted services at refineries on the U.S. Atlantic coast on Thursday, sending fuel prices higher as heavy snowfall and high winds caused electricity outages for almost 80,000 homes and businesses.

The only nuclear plant in Massachusetts was shut just after 2 p.m. because of the failure of a line that connects the reactor to the power grid. Entergy Corp (ETR.N), which operates the Pilgrim Station, said it had not identified the cause of the line problem. ISO New England, which operates the region’s power grid, attributed the shutdown to blizzard conditions. The company did not say when the station would restart.

Utilities in the Southeast have restored service to some customers who were hit by the storm overnight.

Heavy snow pounded the East Coast from Maine as far south as North Carolina on Thursday, taking out power lines, icing roadways and closing schools.

The storm was powered by a rapid plunge in barometric pressure that some weather forecasters referred to as bombogenesis or a “bomb cyclone,” which brought high winds and swift, heavy snowfall.

The region has also been in the grip of a prolonged cold spell.

Prices for heating oil HO-NYH HO-DIFF-NYH and natural gas in the U.S. Northeast hit their highest levels in years on the back of near-record heating demand. Benchmark U.S. heating oil futures HOc1 are near their highest in almost three years.

The U.S. average home residential heating oil prices rose 5.4 percent to $3.078 a gallon in the week through Jan. 1 from a week earlier, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. On the East Coast, prices rose 5.4 percent to $3.085 a gallon.

U.S. average residential heating oil prices for the 2017-18 period are well above the 2016-17 levels, the data showed.

U.S. natural gas demand was expected to remain near record highs this week. Natural gas is the major fuel for residential and commercial heating in the U.S. Northeast and is also widely used by power plants.

On Thursday, natural gas futures NGc1 fell 12.8 cents, or 4.3 percent, to settle at $2.880 per million British thermal units. That was the biggest one-day decline for the contract in three weeks as less cold weather was predicted. However, regional prices soared under pressure from the cold snap.

U.S. spot natural gas and power prices on Thursday rose to their highest in years in several regions.

Next-day power prices in New England E-NEPLMHP-IDX and PJM E-PJWHRTP-IX, which covers much of the U.S. mid-Atlantic and Midwest region, rose to their highest since January 2014 due to a spike in local natural gas prices.

New England’s cash prices LNG-CG-BS-SNL soared last week, and remained near four-year highs at $36.32 per mmBtu. ISO-New England, that region’s power grid operator, said on Thursday that its power operators were relying more heavily on generators that burn heating oil due to heavy natural gas demand from homes and businesses.

“We expect to have sufficient capacity and fuel available and expect to be able to weather the storm without running up against significant emissions limits, but concerns remain the same regarding fuel availability and emissions limits throughout this protracted cold spell and the rest of the winter,” the company said in a statement.

ISO New England spokeswoman Marcia Blomberg said there were “no immediate reliability issues to the local area” due to the shutdown of Pilgrim.

The lights did not go out in New England after the 688 megawatt Pilgrim plant shut because New England, like all U.S. power grids, keeps some generating plants in reserve in case an operating unit unexpectedly shuts. On Thursday, the grid had a reserve of over 2,100 MW. One megawatt is enough to power about 1,000 U.S. homes.

if power stations shut down because of the cold and pricing surges to high so that you can't use it when it is going..

then whats going to happen??

people will freeze to death...

What garbage!

Already in an ice age—2017 was the second hottest year!

The sun since the 1980s has slightly decreased the TSI we get yet still the world warmed. At some stage the sun will increase TSI and temperatures will jump up.

A GSM would reduce temperatures by 0.3°C just like the Maunder Minimum did. That hardly winds back any of the temperature increase from AGW.

Only those of low IQ would even read garbage like that!

Looks clear to me.

Lees said the later half of the year would be really cold and decrease the average temp. Yeah right.

2018 will likely be a little cooler due to a weak La Nino developing in the Pacific.

But she cautions that her mathematical research cannot be used as proof that there will be a mini ice age this time around, not least because of global warming.

"I hope global warning will be overridden by this effect, giving humankind and the Earth 30 years to sort out our pollution," she said.

But Professor Zharkova warned that any downward impact on global warming will last only until the Sun's two magnetic waves become active again in the 2050s.

Professor Zharkova also said this

However, Zharkova ends with a word of warning: not about the cold but about humanity's attitude toward the environment during the minimum. We must not ignore the effects of global warming and assume that it isn't happening. “The Sun buys us time to stop these carbon emissions,” Zharkova says. The next minimum might give the Earth a chance to reduce adverse effects from global warming.

you need to look at the historical charts posted by myself and bobby to see which parts of the earth will Freeze during the Solar Minimum (ice age)

some parts of Alaska actually warm during these times according to "historical" charts..

Professor Zharkova also says that long term global warming will not be affected

You reject this because it doesn't suit your agenda.

if you have been paying attention both myself and bobby have been laying down the scientific information for the past 12 months now in regards to the world cooling...

but now..

BUT NOW

THE (so called) CLIMATE SCIENTISTS are now admitting that there is indeed an Ice age coming...

this goes against every lie that they've been spewing for the last 20 years!!

my position has not changed..

the climate Pedler's position is now starting to change.. (and about time.. dur   Cheesy )

but they want to keep the Fake Climate Funds coming in by adding...

AFTER THE MINI ICE AGE DON'T FORGET GLOBAL WARMING

****off....

what we are seeing are historical cycles... there's warming years and then there's cooler years...

its that simple...

only a halfwit could not see that...  Roll Eyes

Oh dear, Mechanic, you should have looked for the source:

Quote:
Abstract
A comprehensive spectral analysis of both the solar background magnetic field (SBMF) in cycles 21-23 and the sunspot magnetic field in cycle 23 reported in our recent paper showed the presence of two principal components (PCs) of SBMF having opposite polarity, e.g., originating in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively. Over a duration of one solar cycle, both waves are found to travel with an increasing phase shift toward the northern hemisphere in odd cycles 21 and 23 and to the southern hemisphere in even cycle 22. These waves were linked to solar dynamo waves assumed to form in different layers of the solar interior. In this paper, for the first time, the PCs of SBMF in cycles 21-23 are analyzed with the symbolic regression technique using Hamiltonian principles, allowing us to uncover the underlying mathematical laws governing these complex waves in the SBMF presented by PCs and to extrapolate these PCs to cycles 24-26. The PCs predicted for cycle 24 very closely fit (with an accuracy better than 98%) the PCs derived from the SBMF observations in this cycle. This approach also predicts a strong reduction of the SBMF in cycles 25 and 26 and, thus, a reduction of the resulting solar activity. This decrease is accompanied by an increasing phase shift between the two predicted PCs (magnetic waves) in cycle 25 leading to their full separation into the opposite hemispheres in cycle 26. The variations of the modulus summary of the two PCs in SBMF reveals a remarkable resemblance to the average number of sunspots in cycles 21-24 and to predictions of reduced sunspot numbers compared to cycle 24: 80% in cycle 25 and 40% in cycle 26.

Ice age not mentioned—that was done by the popular press.

Not only that, a GSM, Dalton or Maunder etc did not cause the Little Ice Age now, did it? The LIA was already going when they happened.

There are negative feedback loops in the climate.
Put simply - if you try to heat up the Earth it
will react by getting colder.

One example of such a loop is the melting of fresh water
from Greenland  which would cause the Gulf stream to stop
and plunge not only England but the whole of Europe into an Ice Age.

Remember London is 51 degrees North & so is the middle of Canada.
Without the effect of the Gulf stream, Europe would have a
climate just like Canada -
extreme winter cold.

But there is more -
there are many other feedback loops & they can not only be negative feedback  -
there are positive ones too.

A good example of a positive loop is the albedo affect -

caused by ice reflecting sunlight & heat back into space.
The more ice you get - the colder it gets.

And where the ice has melted, dark ocean water is exposed. These changes decrease the albedo.
With a lower albedo more solar energy is absorbed and less is reflected. This causes more ice to melt, which in turn lowers the albedo, causes more energy to be absorbed and more warming to occur.

Positive feedback is known as an under damped system
and can oscillate wildly about a mean temperature.
Are every one of these feedback systems in the climate models?
I doubt that all the possible systems are well understood
or even known about.

Also - climate scientists get their money from proving
that there is AGW.
If they came up with opposite results their funding would be cut off.

How do they know that it will only hit the UK ?

OK for the rest of us ?

There are negative feedback loops in the climate.
Put simply - if you try to heat up the Earth it
will react by getting colder.

One example of such a loop is the melting of fresh water
from Greenland  which would cause the Gulf stream to stop
and plunge not only England but the whole of Europe into an Ice Age.

Remember London is 51 degrees North & so is the middle of Canada.
Without the effect of the Gulf stream, Europe would have a
climate just like Canada -
extreme winter cold.

Except the melting of Greenland ice, about 280Gtons every year, if it were to stop the Gulf Stream is cause and effect, not a loop.

The albedo effect is a loop and is why the poles are melting 2-3 times as fast as the rest of the planet—look at the map included in the “2017 second hottest year” post.

With all the 46% extra CO2 in the air just how cold will the UK get?

You've made lots of contributions to this thread but strangely you haven't yet stated your own opinion.

Opinion on what? A prediction for the future? Like CAGW? I leave it to others. Wink

lee's suddenly become coy and evasive. Who would have imagined that?
He's spent thousands of posts trying to discredit AGW but when some loony scientist claims we are in for a mini ice age he does silent.

Yeah.
1. So you have proof of the amount AGW?
2. Where have I tried to discredit AGW. Man has warmed the earth through land use changes. Think UHI. What I have tried to discredit is CAGW.
3.  I still don't believe you can model a chaotic system and impute the future. Wink

You can't even get your facts right.

Isn't Nom de Plume the same bloke who said the glacier retreat could be traced back to the start of the Industrial Revolution? Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Look at what they were saying in 2007:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7139797.stm

Arctic summers ice-free 'by 2013'

By Jonathan Amos
Science reporter, BBC News, San Francisco

Arctic summer melting in 2007 set new records

More details

Scientists in the US have presented one of the most dramatic forecasts yet for the disappearance of Arctic sea ice.

Their latest modelling studies indicate northern polar waters could be ice-free in summers within just 5-6 years.

Professor Wieslaw Maslowski told an American Geophysical Union meeting that previous projections had underestimated the processes now driving ice loss.

Summer melting this year reduced the ice cover to 4.13 million sq km, the smallest ever extent in modern times.

Remarkably, this stunning low point was not even incorporated into the model runs of Professor Maslowski and his team, which used data sets from 1979 to 2004 to constrain their future projections.

In the end, it will just melt away quite suddenly
Professor Peter Wadhams
"Our projection of 2013 for the removal of ice in summer is not accounting for the last two minima, in 2005 and 2007," the researcher from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, explained to the BBC.

"So given that fact, you can argue that may be
our projection of 2013 is already too conservative."

Former US Vice President Al Gore cited Professor Maslowski's analysis on Monday in his acceptance speech at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo.

A million square kilometres of Arctic Ocean were ice free last NH summer. Even Dubyne agreed to that, Bobby.

You can try to file and hammer facts but they just do not fit an ice age theory, Bobby, sorry.

But keep hammering square pegs into round holes, Bobby.

2017 was the second or third hottest year (see my OP “2017 second hottest year”) and it was not an El Nino year.

2017 not an El Nino year and it was nearly as hot as 2016 which was an El Nino year. That is something to think about.

The OP to this thread is wrong as I have shown by posting the abstract of the paper.

Ice ages are a long way off.

The Maunder Minimum cooled parts of the NH by about 0.3–0.4°C. The Earth has warmed 1.2°C since 1850. The effect of any GSM now will be miniscule.

Bobby knows this: he very carefully did not date the MM after we had agreed on when the LIA started. So why is he posting about a major ice age????

Hi lee,
correct me if I'm wrong -

didn't we just see the ice go all the way from the North pole
down to Florida in the USA?

You have tried that lie before, Bobby. Also that I push the Mann hockey stick.

Why do you lie so much? Trying to make square pegs go in round holes?

You know the LIA happened some hundreds of years before the Maunder Minimum came in so you know a GSM does not cause an ice age!

So why the lies? Why keep trying to hammer square pegs into round holes?

If you are not honest how can anyone believe your promises of “fair and impartial?”  I have posted here on this board for long enough to know you lie and are the opposite of fair and impartial.
