This is another NSW Health official document.

Qld doesn't have one like that. Qld apparently relies on it's own scant Code of Conduct and the National Code of Conduct, both of which have little in the way of respect for patients regarding cultural specifics

I applaud the bloke who sent the email, hopefully Qld Health wakes up and commits to better cultural respect for it's patients

Well said.

It's always a case of white English-speaking Australians having to be 'culturally sensitive' to our Third World immigrants ~ but never the other way round.

Herb, the most they'll do is ask the ethnic doctors to move away from the patients before they rattle off in they own lingo

Thing is though, the whole national Health Care system needs overhauling, it's too much of a institution for employment and everything else is behind the times except for the medical equipment, it's world class and there's plenty of it. But the training of personnel is lagging far behind that of a first class psychology that should be apparent in modern hospitals, to have complete confidence in it

Cultural respect is only for ethnics - you're right about that. But worse than that, there are uppity ethnic personnel who think they are above traditional Anglo Aussies. There's lots of problems. Doctors and male nurses having it off with female Asian nurses on the sly, as an example.

I accept you have a point Mr Hammer....Protocols can be put in place where staff can leave the ward before conversing in a foreign language....However a blanket ban would be insulting and demeaning to any proud professional!!!

Huh Huh Huh
They are in Australia you know.

And as far as I know you can speak any language you want in Australia....No compromise for the bigots!!!

Unity? What about diagnosing Munchausens syndrome bi-proxy?

How do you say that in English, Homo?

And how does one say Homo?

Please explain?

that's "by" proxy. And no hyphen.  Tongue

I find that even Aussies mumble (speak through closed lips) ... I am not going deaf but sometimes I have to ask an Aussie to repeat stuff ....

And when they repeat it ...can you understand the english then?

Do you ask foreigners to repeat what they say in their language?

You'd ask for it to be repeated in english ..no?

'I have received a few complaints lately about staff speaking in their own language in front of others,' the email cited by the Courier Mail reads.

It is claimed the email has come from a senior at the remote country hospital.

'If I get any other complaints the matter will be referred to HR,' they say.

Queensland Health has confirmed an investigation is under way but North West Hospital and Health Service has denied the accusation.

Acting Chief Executive Barbara Davis said there was no requirement for staff to only speak English with each other at the hospital.

'We are looking into this matter and if anyone within the hospital has issued such a communication without the authorisation of senior management, they will be counselled,' she told the Courier Mail.

So there is nothing to the story!!!

Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Yes there is ............ she said when they are with each other.

With each other where? In the toilets?, smoko room?

They should not be speaking it to each other in the wards full of english speaking only patients.

It's rude & it's ignorant.

Correct!

But! ~ in my vast experience of hospitals and wards I have not once heard anyone speaking anything but English. It must be a Queensland thing where the newest migrants are sent who haven't yet come to grips with familiarising themselves with the English language.

What I do object to are those goddamned hijabs some hospital doctors and nurses wear.

Nobody walks around on the streets, schools, offices like that.

What exactly are you curious about?

So what is the relevance of your nurse's picture?
