If your treating doctor is speaking to a colleague in another language in your vicinity people may feel like they are hiding information from you. That's where the paranoid part of the article is coming from. Health specialists should always speak English in Australian hospitals. It's professional and good manners.

Professionals who choose to practice in Australia should speak English and GOOD English at that.   They can speak their native language at home to their heart's content.

A few years ago my son was taken to hospital after a work accident.  The attending doctor's accent was so thick we could barely understand her.  She sent him home and we were glad to get out of there as it was a strain to try to communicate.

3 days later he got a call to immediately go back to the hospital because it turned out his spine was fractured.

Health care is important and being able to understand the doctors and nurses is imperative.

That's true, BO. And the language test for ALL medical professions is so hard I doubt I'd pass it.

I know a professor in nursing from the Philippines. She's passed the nursing test a few times, but she's always gotten stuck on the English test. Talking to her, she speaks English well enough for me to understand her - far better than her husband, who's a doctor.

BANNED.

What has that got to do with the 'attending doctor' from whose clutches you were so anxious to escape because of her heavy accent?

Workers at a Queensland hospital have been issued with a warning to immediately stop speaking foreign languages at work because it makes patients feel 'paranoid and isolated'.

'I have received a few complaints lately about staff speaking in their own language in front of others,' the email cited by the Courier Mail reads.

I accept you have a point Mr Hammer....Protocols can be put in place where staff can leave the ward before conversing in a foreign language....However a blanket ban would be insulting and demeaning to any proud professional!!!

Huh Huh Huh
They are in Australia you know.

And as far as I know you can speak any language you want in Australia....No compromise for the bigots!!!

How will Queensland cope without foreign doctors and nurses....That is the possible outcome if the Government pushes the issue when two foreigners converse in their first language and it is considered inappropriate....However doctors / nurses need to communicate with patients so English is essential....Banning people from speaking a foreign language because it might make some patients uncomfortable sounds like bullshit to me!!!

The question should be as to why we have so many foreign doctors & nurses when unemployment here is so high?

Correct.

It's another downside of multiculturalism that immigrant Third World staff working with patients inside Australian hospitals are ignorant of the Western ethic that says it demonstrates bad manners to speak in a foreign language that rudely excludes English-only speakers in the confined environment of a hospital ward.

It's another cultural 'diversion' that we could do without. Here we see these immigrants being told that in Western societies it's ignorant and rude to jabber away in your ancestral language in the presence of others while able to speak English.

As I know from experience, Indians/Pakistanis are the biggest offenders when it comes to talking loudly in their own language. They practically yell at each other, and couldn't give a rat's arse if their pratter is annoying to English-only speakers in Australia.

I've often wondered that. Country people do it because it stops flies going in their mouths Nef.

I've had the same problem understanding Indian accents in the hospital system. Filipino accents as well. No one ever told these people that it's not enough to speak English in an accent that can't be understood.
