Timor L'Este - oh dear

Have our govts done enough as good & helpful neighbours to try to ensure East Timor develops a sustainable economy and doesn't become a failed state? I doubt it.

Of course there's a fine balance between minding your own business and trying to steer people in the right direction. But the record seems to show we haven't tried that hard.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

If they quit whingeing about Australia drilling for oil nearby, then they will probably see more interest in Australia investing in East Timor. This "Gimme, gimme" attitude and "what have you done for us lately?" entitlement by the East Timorese is getting on the nerves of Australia. No wonder the Indonesians were happy to be rid of them.
